  • Did you know that a relative of the Brazilian wandering spider was living in the United States? Today we're going to track it down and find out just how dangerous it actually is!
    Subscribe: / mywildbackyard
Here at MyWildBackyard we investigate the secrets of the natural world- secrets that can be hidden in our very own backyards! I want to share the incredible world of insects, spiders and other wildlife with you and inspire you to explore your curiosity. Get out there, and find your adventure!
For those who read the description- we've updated the channel! I'm working on adding more features to videos to better expand our conversations about the secrets we find in the natural world! Introducing the Creature Tier System! There are four rankings:
    1. Staple - These are the lowest tier creatures. They are the most common species in a given habitat, and while they're not boring, they're really only exciting when you're exploring a new habitat and you haven't seen them before. Not something to write home about.
    2. Neat - These are a step up from Staple. They don't make your entire day, but they are worth taking a closer look at when found. Definitely can be exciting to have a productive day finding many Neat species.
    3. Wild - These are exciting to find. Whether they have interesting defensive features that offer a nice challenge in the field, are particularly cool looking, or maybe a little bit rare, Wild species aren't necessarily the MOST memorable of encounters, but they definitely make your day when you see them. An adventure featuring many Wild species will truly be memorable.
    4. Gem - These are special. Usually involving extremely interesting biology and significant rarity, Gem species are animals that you really do not see every day. These species can make your whole adventure, and will be very memorable.

When I was in the Navy stationed in Guam, we often ran into a huge (the bug, not the problem) roach problem at certain times of the year. The solution was simple. People started keeping a wolf spider (aka "wolfie") in their barracks room. They eliminated the problem so well that the base would send out an advisory three days in advance of any pesticide spraying so we could trap our resident wolfie and keep it in a safe place until the all-clear was given. Given a choice between giant roaches and wolfies, I take the latter every time. There was only one hitch: the wolfies would often walk across the ceiling, and if he lost his footing he could drop right down on your poker party with the expected result of pandemonium. 😂

Wish my mother knew this when her husband was stationed there. I heard her tell the story of the flying giant cockroach many times! Myself I never saw a cockroach until I was in my twenties. Guess I lived where there were plenty of Wolfies.

See, now I think *_this_* is one of the big reasons people are so afraid of spiders. I had a spider fall on my face while I was sleeping about 10 years ago, and I *_still_* think about it anytime I have to usher a spider outta the house~

When I was based in Hawaii, we had a termite swarming issue. The solution? Geckos. We'd catch them and release them in our rooms and they would eat their fill and take care of the issue.

Intellectual honesty lends credibility to anyone intent on educating others. We cannot trust anything said by sometimes who claims to know everything, as they likely don't know what they don't know, or won't say what they don't know. Those who admit their deficits in information are more likely to know the things they speak on. It definitely benefits his mission to be up front and honest about what he knows about, or what he needs to learn more about.

@@heavyhead2k139 absolutely. A skilled manipulator will absolutely be able to use that same approach to deceive and misdirect others, so it really does come down to cross-referencing the things that have been said as fact and ensuring that there's a good record on those statements, of course. In my experience, most manipulators will take another approach, though. Appearing teachable is only a tactic they'd use if in a position subordinate to those they want to manipulate. It all does come down to context, in the end for sure. Most often people who can admit their lackings are doing so in decent faith and in an attempt to be honest with themselves and others and that is a good sign for the type of person worth giving a chance to, in my opinion. So long as everything checks out, they're exactly the kind of people to be around to be pushed to continue growing, and to have the opportunity to push others in the same way.

Spencer if you read this you'll appreciate this story.
I came home from work the other day at around 3am (I work at a bar.) This time of year we have a good amount of Brown Widows that like to make their webs in annoying areas, by the back door on the porch specifically. As I'm walking into the house I accidentally walk into a web I didn't see at first. I disregard it and head into my room and as I start emptying my pockets I feel something crawling on my ear. I take off my hat and look at it real quick. Nothing on the hat but I happen to see a Brown Widow just chilling right there on my middle finger, not crawling around or showing any signs of aggression or agitation, she was really just hanging out. After the shock wears off I decided to walk back outside and coax her back onto her web. After walking back outside and turning the light on I see it right in front of the door. I slowly and gently move my hand back onto the web and she immediately crawls back onto the web. I watched her move around for about another minute, just really processing what just happened. I've never had arachnophobia but I definitely would rather not have spiders crawl on me, however this interaction really makes me appreciate spiders a lot more. I've watched several of your videos, as well as others that handle spiders, and I now see what you guys mean by they don't bite unless they have to. Now every time I see one I act like it's the same one, named her Margaret actually lol.

Watching spider videos, and tarantula keepers, etc on youtube has basically turned the creepy factor on spiders for me down from a 7, to more like a 2. I don't think I'd want one on me unless it was a jumping spider. Those, thanks to Lucas the Spider, I don't have an issue with. xD There are a lot of tarantula keepers and the personalities of those even between members of the same species is pretty wild.

Have you ever been to Australia? If you have, then you'll know that spiders, snakes are reclusive, don't like loud noise, so why would they inhabit a residential area? The only reason why they would, is because your house is filthy, there are hiding spots for them in the clutter of your rubbish, which also attracts insects, their food source. Educate yourself, before you make ridiculous assumptions

The last bite was circular probably an inch or two in circumference (the others were not as big) and it became a violet/blue colored circle before fading to a green/yellowish in about harf a month. It was very hard but not painful. It took a month to be completely gone.

I believe fear comes from not knowing about them or how they live/act. So thankyou for your videos, they have taught me so much about our 8 legged friends. I may never be able to let one crawl on me, but it's only because I don't want to cause it harm out of jolting fear. For me it's a primal response. This very much resembles the Hobo spider in Utah that was causing havoc in the '90s. That spider was very hard to identify but was said to be able to run at three feet a second. It's bite would eat away your flesh and even caused some hospitalizations. But they also looked just like the giant house spider. Cool video, love your work!

I'm East Hillsborough county and I very often find large wolf spiders around my house. The only one that I ever encountered that was aggressive was one that I found in a water meter box. When I would feed it, it would attack the tongs hard and I could feel it hit the metal. I had a beautiful jumping spider for years, and she was quite easy to handle and would watch her for hours on my desk. Sometimes she would watch my mouse cursor on the screen.

I have always been afraid of spiders since being a toddler and I’ve never been sure why because it’s my fear that drove that curiosity in them. My love of animals got me into thinking about how they (animals in general, vertebrates and invertebrates alike) think and how they go about life. This kind of thought process got me eventually thinking the same way about people, our fears driving our survival instincts and how we project that onto animals, thinking they’re just rabid animals ready to attack any given second, when in all reality they’re trying to survive and doing what’s natural to them and just us seeing them kicks in a survival instinct. All of that being said, this line of thinking helped me be more open to spiders, and paired with your passion for these animals and dedication to content creation and teaching people about these amazing animals has got me to finally hold a spider! Your series on jumping spiders and the honesty you include with all of your videos help so much in getting back to our roots as people with nature. I’d love any names anyone might have for a future jumping spider pet! Thank you thank you thank you spencer for sharing your passion with the world and helping people grow, any way the community can support you whether through analytics or financial means (Patreon, gofundme, etc.) When people like you take the time and effort to help other people and especially species that have a more negative reputation, you should have all the resources you need to keep doing these and spreading positivity. All the fucking love for you spencer❤️
