Most of the older Linux distributions will only detect IDE drives and will require additional drivers to be able to detect SATA drives. That's probably why they don't detect your HDD. I think Windows also had this, up to XP. The unmodified install disks for XP would not detect SATA drives by default, you needed to load a driver during the installation in order to be able to use them. Although some unofficial distributions would include these by default. Maybe SP3 did include them as well, I don't remember. That's also what the Mandriva disk was asking you to load, although by 2007 standards it should have been able to detect it automatically. Also, MP3 is an (open) proprietary format, so some distributions at the time required third party codecs to be able to play MP3 files due to license issues.
i remember trying linux back in 07. yeah i got it working but like every thing on my laptop needed a workaround. it was miserable. then i just ended up never using it...

The nostalgia of some of those older Ubuntu Distros was an awesome throwback to me. freaking out school teachers by running Linux off a Live USB to bypass all of the things the school had blocked. oh and using it to crack the password to the default windows admin account password that was shared between ALL of the PC's in the school to install what the hell I liked on the PC's.

As someone who seen that one video from Novell, you're actually supposed to pronounce "SUSE" as "souza". Not my word, it's theirs. In the Linux world there's no way to properly pronounce names. My friends actually get caught off-guard when I say GNOME "incorrectly".
Well, the name SuSE is a German acronym (System- und Software-Entwicklung). The e at the end isn't muted, just like in Porsche for example (that many Americans get wrong too)
Thank you for bringing back the PTSD memories of how janky and unfriendly Linux was before the mid to late 2010s I hate it I'm currently whispering thanks to my Arch install in binary for not being as terrible as it was 12-15 years ago
MP3 functionality didn't hit until after the version of Ubuntu you had the most success with. All of the versions you stuck in could've seen your hard drive with a little investment of time... I get for the sake of video speed skipping it, but in most cases you were two clicks from install..
Now try and set up Linux (like X-DSL) on the Original Xbox. Got it semi working, but keyboard support is broken in X11 and I can't get my mouse to work.
Awesome video, i was gonna ask how ohio was during the stream, but i forgot. and first, too. Don't worry, i don't know linux, too. Has to be the only time i've seen you angry.
