So glad to hear it! They do take quite a bit of time to research and make, but I love sharing the stories of the Multiverse with you all. Welcome to Magic, planeswalker :)
I think becoming a teacher at witherbloom is a fitting way to rap up her character. This actually makes me wanna see a spin off set dedicated to the academy that witherbloom is part of to see how Liliana is holding up and the what the rest of the academy is like.
An excellent telling of Vess's life. I love the character Liliana and this was great to listen to. I enjoyed it as much as the Nichol Bolas video. Well done! Your next target should be Garruk.
Enjoy! The lore is what got me hooked and makes playing just that much more fun. I love learning about a new character and feeling more invested in them and then deciding to make a commander deck for them!
Dudeeeee I cant watch anyone else’s Lore stories besides yours. The addition to card arts and what they depict in the lore really ties it together in a way I dont see any other TH-camr doing. KEEP IT UP!! Amazing Videos!!
Wow, I truly appreciate the kind words! I love that my own unique way of storytelling and presenting can be felt as you watch and I'm happy that you enjoy it
No one is beyond redemption but it is up to them to make that choice and atone. Liliana, I believe, has indeed made that choice and with Sorin falling deeper and deeper into depression, once again becoming mono black, I expect she will pick up his slack becoming black and white.
If they were to make an animated movie about Magic the Gathering, I feel like Liliana’s story would be epic as hell. If they did it with the proper level of respect to the character and simply just took the story and the characters seriously with no MCU flare, but instead with the level of love and devotion that the Lord of the Rings movies had, it would be simply an outstanding piece of fantasy story telling.
I love what they did with Lilianas story moving towards War of the Spark, character development and redemption thats done well is always cool to see. I'd love to see a video on Jace, I think what happens in Ixalan is one of the best character moments in MTG history, even if it gets messed up by War of the Sparks... I also think a seeing Liliana/Jace reunite properly would be cool, seeing as how they've both changed so much since they first met.
I feel like her getting a redemption ark is part of a larger issue with the whole narrative of Magic in the modern era. They stakes are absolutely non existent anymore. 90% of the weather light crew were permanently damaged or killed, the same with the 9 titans. Urza kills himself to stop Yawgmoth, and a Karn who has literally had a life of hell basically kills his own father to complete the legacy weapon.
@@skillganon606 Couldn't disagree more. Liliana has had a life of disappointment and tragedy. Simply offing her at the end would be lazy storytelling. Forcing her to confront her past, precipitated by a sacrifice she struggles to understand, is far more meaningful than something like her dying to save the day. Her deciding to take Bolas' place would have maybe been interesting and a huge turn people wouldn't have seen coming...considering the lengths to which they went to demonstrate she was having a change of heart. But yeah, cliches like the bad guy doing the right thing at the end and paying with their lives is so passe. Off Jace if you want but leave Liliana alone!
@@jamesmoore1317 ah so you're of the opinion that monsters should just be forgiven. I'm in the other camp, nothing but her death could atone for the horrible things she has done. Her feeling remorse isn't gonna undo all the damage she caused. And it took a while but Jace is both a more interesting character and more likable. Make no mistake he did some very evil things but he understands what he did was wrong and he's had to work through it. Lily doesn't care as long as she gets what she wants.
@@skillganon606 So it's okay for Jace to redeem himself but not Liliana? Looks like you have double standards and what's okay for Jace, a man, isn't okay for Liliana, a woman. You live in a silly black and white world.
Amazingly done! I do think Liliana is on the right track but still has a long way to go. My vote for the next planes walker is Dack Fayden and his tragic end
"Stop complaining, you can rest when you're dead. Oops - sorry." I've heard and/or felt this on different occasions echo in my head before. Distant, causing my mind to writhe in agony trying to fully decipher it. In parallel, before I was a legal adult, an older brother of mine used to sarcastically ask, "Hey, you wanna go to the casino? Oh - wait, you can't. Sorry."
Your channel is truly a find Eric! no joke, they are well researched, well edited and generally very pleasing to hear. Wishing you all the success in the future!
Started playing with Eldrich Moon and immediatly fell in love with Liliana the last hope. She pretty much was the reason I was playing Black due to her being so powerful. Her quotes and lore are also amazing with a sarcastic tone that brings chills down the spine, but also awe inspiring :). Great lore coverage btw, subbed :)
Once small nitpick is that I think the War of the Spark trailer is meant to show that the reason why Liliana turned on Bolas was because of her seeing two siblings die while trying to escape (the older sister trying to protect her younger brother) which in turn reminded Liliana of her and her brother aka the entire reason she went down this selfish power-hungry path in the first place. I think her betrayal of Bolas has a lot less to do with her loyalty and more to do with that.
Thanks so much for this. Absolutely love Liliana, absolutely love this video. I personally can't wait to find out definitively who/what the Raven man is! Anyone have any thoughts on him? Is he just a figment of her mind? Lim-Dul projecting himself? Or is he something... more?
Thanks for the video ! Imo, the time for the 5 "color representing characters" has passed. We should still see them from time to time, but they are allowed to rest. For instance, i like seing chandra in the new stories for innistrad, but i have little interest for the Avengers Team. Here is my list of pw i'd like to focus on. Not necessarily as a team, but here we go: The kenrith twins, kaya and her quest to save her plane, Tacenda and davriel (from Children of the nameless, one of my fav mtg books), Reunion between Elspeth/Ajani/Karn. And for some stories i'd love to be written but will never happend: - The spirit gem is somehow a rebirth plan for bolas. An egg that could be feared by ugin and then taken care of by Sarkhan who could channel baby bolas's power and mastermind abilities for good (ugin would fear what a new bolas would do, be a bad dad while sarkhan is good with raising dragons) (not my own idea, seen on tumblr) - The Phyrexian Schism : Based on two flavor texts: Double masters showcase frame Mox opal and Urabrask the Hidden : There are flaws in the orthodoxy and doubt in the minds of phyrexians. Basically a Elesh Norn vs Urabrask civil war. Where Norn loses in the end. I'd like Elspeth to help "cure" the phyrexians from Yawgmoth's influence on the Oil (and thus its influence on their memory). This would take her from wanting genocide on the phyrexians to help them heal along with Mirrodin. Obviously Karn would be there. Ajani too, and maybe Tamyo. And why not throw daretti into the mix because i like him and he could tinker some artifacts. (credits to simic-simp on tumblr for this story, i only added the part on the planeswalkers that i'd like to see there)

I enjoyed the video, it's so well done!! Just discovered your channel through the Nicol Bolas video, and decided to keep watching and subbed!! Been playing Magic since 2011. I hope you make a lore video for Sarkhan Vol or Sorin Markov. Liliana Vess, is one of my favorite Planeswalkers of all time next to Jace and Garruk!
Absolutely amazing, ever since watching the Bolas video, and you telling me Liliana was next I've been waiting for this......and you did not disappoint. Can't wait for the next one
@@TheLorebrarians is there a chance, you could add the list of cards mentioned and shown in the video? Putting together a deck based on Liliana and her story
Just recently started watching with the video on Bolas. I'd love to watch a video on Sorin Markov, being the second oldest plansewalker and all the things he has done and been up too
Liliana is my favorite planeswalker. I was introduced to MTG when I bought the anthropology deck with Liliana Vess as the planeswalker. At first, i thought Liliana was a bad guy, but when i read her story, i saw her imperfections and understood why she became what she is, and i loved her even more. She was hit with many imperfections, but she coursed through it all and redeemed herself. Now, i want to collect all cards telling her story from start to the current. 🖤🧟
You should check the channel "Rhystic studies", he talks about art and mtg. As for other mtg channels, i'd recommand Tolarian community college (obviously!) and Spice8Rack
Not often I subscribe to a channel after watching only one video, but you, sir, nailed it :) Thanks for all your work in putting all this info together - I look forward to learning more about the other stories. But dammit all - who is/was the Raven Man?!? That still feels like Wizards haven't finished telling that story - at least, I hope they haven't finished, I really want to know more about his motivations. We know why Bolas does what he does, you just explained beautifully why Liliana does what she does - I just hope someday they give us more of the answers about the Raven Man as well :)
Even though Sorin is my favorite planeswalker, I think Liliana had far better character development. She went to destroying everything including herself in pursuit of her own petty desires, to a being of conscious of her actions and conscious of the consequences that herself or others could face due to said actions. I hope to see more of her going forward.
Nice telling of Lilliana's story! You can really tell how she's changed as a person over the years. And it's really thanks to Gideon (and his sacrifice) that she's become willing to stand for others and stop running away. I think it'd be fitting to tell Gideon's tale as the most immediate next Planeswalker video, but here are some others I'd keep near the top of the list for near-future vids: The Eldrazi and the various Innistrad Vampire Families (because of current MTG events), and the Phyrexians (because with that drop of the Green Praetor in Kaldheim, they might become relevant again really soon).
Thanks for the suggestions! The phyrexians will be a huge threat in the future, and I'd love to do a big project on them. It will take a bit of research as they've got a long story
@@TheLorebrarians Yawgmoth baby! I will (not-so) patiently wait for that one! A fantastic story. Note: Spice8Rack did a great telling of the Phyrexian beginnings story worth watching.
Wonderful video, well edited and narrated, I got hooked just like a book. Wouldn't mind if it was like 3 hours video. Is there any more lord about her ?
Wow… Awesome story and engaging! Ending surprised me though, given how Liliana thought and chose up to that point, I thought she was going to go through with getting and using that spell! Usually in stories, seems to be the way it goes. But very tragic story… But it’s a Liliana story- I don’t know what I expected lol 😂
Once again, great job telling her story. Really covered at all from start to finish. Would love to see Urza covered. I just have a feeling with the phyrexians on the horizon, we could see him return temporarily to join in the battle. Perhaps with that forbidden spell Liliana discovered?
I appreciate it, and I'm working on some outlining for Urza's Saga. He and the phyrexians are the most requested topics for sure. It'll be a large project but one I'm excited to share
Amazing video! Would love to see more deep dives into single characters like this. Do you think you could make videos exploring legendary creatures also?
Appreciate it and the suggestion! I'd love to do more single character dives, but if you haven't already you can check out my niv-mizzet and Akroma videos
This was sooo good! Great job! The only thing I would mention is that wasn’t Thalia was also motivated by her desire to release Avacyn from the helvault? I could see why it wasn’t included, because that’s a whole can of worms that would have taken a while to explain, but either way, awesome job!
Awesome, Eric. This video needs a Love button. I really appreciate what you do. I love stories. I like to look at them from different angles. My kids were born around the time the Lord of the Rings (Jackson) movies came out. I might ask them, have I ever told you the story of Boramir of Gondor? And of course they say, no. I then tell them the tale from a perspective more favorable toward Boramir. Not spin, so much, but an effort to understand the motivation and reasoning of a character. I have no idea what the Witcher is, so I guess I'll check out those videos and learn. I know it will be interesting. You have a gift for that sort of thing.
Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it. I'm quite passionate about learning and sharing stories, and I love sharing it with you all. So happy to hear you enjoyed it
1:08:49 Holy shit, how have I never noticed this before? That musical theme in the trailer is almost identical to Portals in Endgame. In a set I was already comparing to Infinity War.
These videos made me realize the lore of MTG is waaay better than the actual game deserves. Or maybe it's just the excellent storytelling of this channel.
I would like to know more about one that allready stood on the deck of the Weatherlight loooong before and who created.. and lost.. the plain of Mirrodin ... Karn, the Silver Golem ^^
Love this, Lillian is complex like most of us. She has not fully reconciled herself yet. Future planswalkers: Nahri Jace Sorin Sarkhan (because of the time travel with Ugin) Karn Urza Teferi Or storylines: The Brother’s war Phyrexia Zendikar
It would be great to get an overall story of the Phyrexian praetors as a whole, the story between Elesh Norn and the praetors under her control, and Urabrask 's attempts to stop her. Fantastic video though.
@@TheLorebrarians I cannot wait. Small side note on the story: do you think wizards would ever resurrect Yawgmoth? My theory is Elesh Norn is amassing these artifacts like the cosmos elixir to become a planeswalker, and with that power she'll try to resurrect Yawgmoth, under HER control. There's also the possibility that Ashiok encounters a praetor that tries to fight him and he pulls out their nightmare... Yawgmoth, who's will is imprinted in the glistening oil used to compleat them might just be in the back of their mind.
Hi! Maybe anyone can help me, Eric. Any idea or clue about where Kothoped comes from? His clothes gave me the feeling that the belong to old kamigawa or even Tarkir. Thank you so much!!!
I loved this video, truly amazing work, I know there’s not enough for a whole video, but maybe a Minute Myths about Angrath? He was truly one of the more enjoyable planeswalkers we met on Ixalan and I really want to revisit him someday.
One of my favorite planeswalkers. So much so that my youngest, all black cat bears her name. I wonder if we'll ever wind up with a multicolored redeemed Liliana. Maybe even my preferred colors of white/black.
Definitely should have spent a little more time explaining bolas plot which is fully illustrated in commence the end game... The immortal sun has all of the planeswalkers trapped and the only escape is the portal controlled by bolas. Best piece of magic art ever made
Could we see something about Hydras? Idk how much lore there is for them, they just have some of the coolest art haha. But I’d like to like them for more than that.
Planeswalkers always have something horrible happen to them or do something insanely difficult, but Liliana got hers from poisoning her brother and getting scared lol
Gideon, the friend Liliana didn't deserve, but needed.
I'd agree with half of that statement, given what this world has shown me of the raven man.
She was a sample.

At first, i thought Liliana was a bad guy, but when i read her story, i saw her imperfections and understood why she became what she is, and i loved her even more. She was hit with many imperfections, but she coursed through it all and redeemed herself. Now, i want to collect all cards telling her story from start to the current. 🖤🧟
Best of luck with the collecting! She is a great character with many complexities
This is really good. As a new MTG fan I really appreciate these.
You should check the channel "Rhystic studies", he talks about art and mtg. As for other mtg channels, i'd recommand Tolarian community college (obviously!) and Spice8Rack
@@shadox999 Thanks I appreciate it. I'll definitely check it out.
I haven't even started the video yet, and i already know it's gonna be a goodie. Like!
I hope you enjoyed!
Even though Sorin is my favorite planeswalker, I think Liliana had far better character development. She went to destroying everything including herself in pursuit of her own petty desires, to a being of conscious of her actions and conscious of the consequences that herself or others could face due to said actions. I hope to see more of her going forward.
Awesome video man. It's very in-depth, and you had excellent choice in cards regarding art/flavor text.
Love the long lore videos!
Amazing. Thank you for bringing life to Liliana!
This was excellent, thank you for all the videos you make!
Appreciate it, glad you enjoyed
Thank you for this! Lily was and is one of my favorites.
Wow 🤯 I knew most of this lore, but it's so cool to see it again and all condenswd in a great vid like this one 👏🏽 Awesome work, as always 👏🏽🙌🏽
Thanks, so glad you enjoyed it
Excellent video on what's arguably MtG Lore's most fascinating character!
Thanks, she's definitely a favorite of many
Wonderful video, well edited and narrated, I got hooked just like a book. Wouldn't mind if it was like 3 hours video. Is there any more lord about her ?
Love to hear it! There is a little more on Liliana since the release of this video. Dominaria United had a side story about her and the Raven Man
She is the BEST and most interesting character in the whole multiverse in my opinion. also can you PLEASE do a update?
Wow… Awesome story and engaging! Ending surprised me though, given how Liliana thought and chose up to that point, I thought she was going to go through with getting and using that spell!
Usually in stories, seems to be the way it goes.
But very tragic story… But it’s a Liliana story- I don’t know what I expected lol 😂
Yeah, a very deep and complex character. Glad you enjoyed!
I hope they leave Urza alone. Their current writing wouldn't do him justice.
Can’t say I like her entirely but I like her character trope. She’s very complicated and that’s part of her charm.
She was for sure, just didn't pertain to liliana's own story as much so I cut it. But you're right!
Fuck yeah, lore drop on a Wednesday is a real treat
So happy to hear you enjoyed it
"stop complaining you can rest when you're dead, oh sorry." 😂😂😂 What an icon.
you do a darn good job on these vids, keep it up!
I appreciate it!
god i love liliana, favorite PW when they came out and i didnt know anything about the lore, and the more i learn the more i like lol
Well I appreciate that, maybe it's a bit of both
I would like to know more about one that allready stood on the deck of the Weatherlight loooong before and who created.. and lost.. the plain of Mirrodin ... Karn, the Silver Golem ^^
Love the suggestion. Karn is a great character and will no doubt be a big player as the phyrexian threat looms closer
@@TheLorebrarians Would like that ^^ But we will see who in the end gets selected :)
Love this, Lillian is complex like most of us. She has not fully reconciled herself yet.
Future planswalkers:
Nahri
Jace
Sorin
Sarkhan (because of the time travel with Ugin)
Karn
Urza
Teferi
Or storylines:
The Brother’s war
Phyrexia
Zendikar
Appreciate the insight and the suggestions. I'll try to get around to a few others before, but I'm really excited to take on Urza's Saga as a project
I love falling asleep to this. 🙏🏼 😴
It would be great to get an overall story of the Phyrexian praetors as a whole, the story between Elesh Norn and the praetors under her control, and Urabrask 's attempts to stop her. Fantastic video though.
Apprciate the suggestion. Yawgmoth and the phyrexians are the next big project after I've finished Urza's storyline
Yawgmoth, who's will is imprinted in the glistening oil used to compleat them might just be in the back of their mind.
loving the work! this is an awesome story and well presented =). keep up the good work Lorebrarians
So happy you enjoyed it, I'll keep on improving my craft for you all!
Id love to see something on Rpwan and Will Kenrith!
Great suggestion, very interesting characters!
Liliana is my fav for sure. Admittedly I have a weakness for strong willed and gothic women haha.
Would love to have full breakdowns of all of the gatewatch like this. Jace next?
A great suggestion, would like to get to them soon
Hi! Maybe anyone can help me, Eric. Any idea or clue about where Kothoped comes from?
His clothes gave me the feeling that the belong to old kamigawa or even Tarkir.
Thank you so much!!!
Thank you for doing this! Loved it!
I loved this video, truly amazing work, I know there’s not enough for a whole video, but maybe a Minute Myths about Angrath? He was truly one of the more enjoyable planeswalkers we met on Ixalan and I really want to revisit him someday.
I appreciate the suggestion and would love to return to minute myths as a series. Just tweaking a good balance between work, life, YT right now
I love your videos! And your voice sounds so smooth!
Thank you so much!
One of my favorite planeswalkers. So much so that my youngest, all black cat bears her name.
I wonder if we'll ever wind up with a multicolored redeemed Liliana. Maybe even my preferred colors of white/black.
A great name! Yeah, I do hope we get a white/black liliana that's embraced Gideon's memory
throughly enjoyed this lore video.
That was epic! Nicely done 👍
Appreciate it!
I'm just waiting for my boi yargle to get enough lore for a video
Thank you for the commentary.
I love the most recent story... Turns out the identity of the Raven Man is...

I would love to see a black/white card of lili kinda like how nissa got aome nee colors
Holly hell what an amazing channel. Just found you.
Thanks, and welcome to the channel! Hope you enjoy the content
Would love a Triple A Diablo / Boulders Gate type MTG game would work perfectly
Most fascinating Planeswalker for me!
Hope i did her justice!
@@TheLorebrarians You did! Very well!
Leliana is the peak girl boss ,queen shit ,with a secret soft spot that still Dosent compromise her nature is iconic.
Definitely should have spent a little more time explaining bolas plot which is fully illustrated in commence the end game... The immortal sun has all of the planeswalkers trapped and the only escape is the portal controlled by bolas. Best piece of magic art ever made
Since I had already spent many minutes covering the war of the spark and plans of Bolas in his own video, this one was focused more on Liliana
Love the lore. Think you’ll ever cover Ob Nixilus?
I appreciate it.. He's definitely one I'll cover, but probably not til New Capenna since he seems to play a big role in that set
Liliana vess an legendary necromance who use dark arts.
Could we see something about Hydras? Idk how much lore there is for them, they just have some of the coolest art haha. But I’d like to like them for more than that.
They are on the short list for the next Study In video! There isn't too much on them, but they are much requested and I'd love to cover them
@@TheLorebrarians ohhh exciting
Planeswalkers always have something horrible happen to them or do something insanely difficult, but Liliana got hers from poisoning her brother and getting scared lol
