the writers confirmed in the inside the episode video on youtube that whilst he doesn't close the door on them intending them to die he does consciously choose not to save them when he's back with his mom. "As the water begins to rise and he knows the rain is coming down and he has every opportunity to stop it, he lets that impulsive act becomes permeant. Which is pretty lame to be honest. Dude killed his brothers. It doesn't matter what weird non committal language is used. That's what happened and that's how I perceived it when watching the episode. Writers need to really learn that yes, while human qualities help make a more rounded villain....you can also just show the villain being the absolute manipulative monster they are.

Some of the writers of the show have mentioned the five issue series Penguin Pain and Prejudice by Gregg Hurwitz being a big inspiration for the show and I can definitely see it especially with the fate of his brothers. It's not quite the same but ours world is still responsible for their deaths and also there he has three brothers named Jason, Robert and William. It's also more brutal how they die because in the book, one brother died because Oswald put rat poison in his food. The other died because Oswald left him to drown in a frozen lake. And the last one died because Oswald ran over him with the car. I love how it establishes how protective Oswald is of his mother and how he wanted her attention all to himself. One of my favourite moments was how after his mother died, he grabs his umbrella and starts smashing his brothers' graves and yells "NO, NO, NO. YOU CAN'T HAVE HER. YOU CAN'T HAVE HER!"
This was such an excellent episode that I was absolutely itching for your reactions to it. And god did it not disappoint from the looks on your faces during the cold open alone.
I love Sofia’s reaction after her talk with Gia. It’s a mixture of guilt over the fact that she took away Gia’s agency by thinking she knew best which led her to be institutionalized (just like Carmine did to her) and acceptance of the fact that she shouldn’t have had to become this hardened version of herself in the first place. That her family, especially her father, should have protected her instead of throwing her to the wolves. It’s her finally realizing that despite mostly everyone letting her down, she survived… and the way Cristin Milioti conveys that is so wonderful.
Well her folks had to go, and she would be in danger staying with Sofia. She could send her away to distant relatives or to Italy to boarding school and change her name to keep her safe
