Making 3D Printed "Honeycomb" Coasters with Wood PLA

  • Today we're going to design this eye-catching coaster set in Fusion 360, and 3D print it with wood PLA!
    STL file: morleykert.com/shop/honeycomb...
    Wood PLA is made from wood fibers mixed with PLA (a common plastic used in 3D printing), and allows you to create complex shapes that have a "wooden" texture and feel, and you can use it to create objects that you wouldn't be able to create with traditional woodworking techniques!
    I printed the coasters on my Prusa i3 mk3s, and used the colorfabb woodfill preset filament profile in PrusaSlic3r. This uses an extruder temperature of 200°C, and a bed temperature of 60°C. I used the 0.15mm QUALITY layer height preset, and got really high quality results with my stock 0.4mm nozzle (no clogging!!).
    The first five coasters printed with no problems, but then I started having problems with bed adhesion. I suspect that the wood PLA dirties the PEI bed faster than traditional PLA, and I think my bed is overdue for an acetone cleaning. I don't have any acetone on hand, but printing in a fresh area of the bed and cleaning the bed with dish soap improved the adhesion enough to print the sixth coaster and the stand.
    The wood PLA gives these coasters a really nice, natural color tone, and they feel a lot more premium than if they were printed with standard PLA. However, they don’t feel quite like real wood, and I think a major reason for that is all of the straight edges and sharp corners in the design. They actually remind of the high quality plastic you find in Playmobil furniture, but with a bit of extra texture from the 3D printed layers.
    I’m really excited to experiment more with wood PLA. I think a more organic shape would increase the "woodiness" of the final object.
    I’m very happy with this coaster design, and apart from making your drink look extra fancy, they tessellate and are really fun to play with!
    Thanks for watching!

      Thank you! I use isopropyl alcohol after every print but that just wasn’t cutting it this time, though dish soap did seem to be more effective. I only have 70% so maybe that’s part of the problem.

    Thought to add my same problem with bed adhesion from using many brands from 20% to 30% infill
    Esun, Jayo, Hachbox Ankun,
    I found Esun and ,Ankun to print the best without stringing, but a bit hard to get first layer. as Hachbox and Jayo strings a lot but first layer easier.
    Anyway I have spent many days trying to sort out with differant brands.
    some print I done came out great but by luck.
    I didnt record the settings and so the next times i had all the problems
    I did find the setting in the Gcode in the end and now have them set as profiles, thank god.
    There are many factors that causes the problem,
    Best way is to clean the bed every time before printing,
    Print with a Brim and don't use a skirt and move the z height close to the bed of about 0.01 so you get almost a translucent first layer,
    No Glue needed as this causes lifting around the second to third layers.
    To start of with use around the middle temperature for the Bed as described and also find the sweet spot of the hot for the fillament by printing a heat calibration tower, this is a must as will save wasting time and material on the long prints
    Also make sure not to print to slow as the heat from the nozzle causes the first layer to lift
    If you print to fast then it does not get chance to stick properly as it basically drags the filiamnet of the bed.
    for trying out the best speeds & heats and feeds i would make a 2mm thick square model about the size of acup base.
    Why square you may ask. well its the corners that cause a lot of problems due to shrinking and stressing. as a round objects has much less,
    Well i hope some one find this helpfull.
    Please comment on your experiance.

    Neat coasters! Very different from the coaster video I hope to be doing soon :) Did you try staining any of them to see how they'd look? I know I wouldn't because getting an even stain in all those hexes would be a pain in the rear.

    Is PLA suitable as a material for hot drinks sitting on top?

  • @remcohamersma6436
    @remcohamersma6436 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    At the start you implied that this would not be easy to make out of real wood but these coasters could be made with a lazercutter or cnc realy easy

    • @MorleyKert
      @MorleyKert  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely, these would be a great CNC or laser cutter project! I said that one cool aspect of wood PLA is it allows you to create complex shapes that you wouldn’t really be able to create with “traditional” woodworking techniques - by traditional, I was thinking bandsaw, drill, hand saws, table saw, etc. Though I would think we’re approaching a point where laser cutters and CNCs may soon be known as “traditional” woodworking tools - pretty cool!

    When did the skirt get three layers?
    Ya know you can do the same thing without wasting your time in cad. Just take a basic shape at 7mm in height and have 0 top and bottom layers and just exposing the infill and multiply the infill lines.
