this episode REALLY benefits from not being part of a Justice League show. Seeing the swapped versions of D-list characters helps legitimize them in this show (especially Red Tornado, given his fate). Also, despite being aimed at a younger audience than the 90's show, refusing to properly reveal the Joker's face showed they did trust the audience. Stuff like that is why Brave and the Bold holds up so well.

    • @Shift_Salt
      @Shift_Salt หลายเดือนก่อน +35

Yeah for all those reasons I legitimately loved this episode and it remains one of my favorites even as an adult. I found the Red Hood adaptation so interesting, and as a kid fresh off the 90s Animated Series who only knew Joker as a gangster I gotta say even this morality swapped backstory was much more interesting compared to what they depicted and alluded to there even if it was mainly a burton influence compromise.
(Also was a nice surprise to see you pop up here, love your vids as well!)

One of the neat things about this two-parter is that Joker hadn't actually appeared in Brave and the Bold until this point, because the series had been focusing on non-Batman villains to go with its team-up-of-the-week nature.

So Red Hood's face is basically what we would have gotten had they stuck to their own art style for the show where it was more INSPIRED by Dick Sprang instead of swapping to the 1:1-ish version we see later on when Joker DOES appear?

The slightly more subdued laugh Jeff Bennett does for Red Hood kinda reminds me of his laugh for the Creeper in The New Batman Adventures. The fact that his manic voice for Creeper sounds nothing like his voice for Joker really speaks volumes for his range.

Another thing that gave this Joker reveal weight was up until this point in the series, we actually hadn't seen what Brave and the Bold Joker would look like. So we saw his alternate version first in this 2 parter before the episode that properly introduced him in a topsy turvy team up episode.
This was a really good breakdown video, I hadn't thought about how it's shows Batmans character in how he actually isn't as good at pretending to be evil as he thinks he is.

Its the fact that while Batman may brood and be serious, that doesn't really suggest evilness. Owlman has a sleazy, cocky element to him, sorta like the Bruce Wayne playboy persona Batman puts on, although its genuine for Owlman, showing another reversal.

In my own personal OPINION, Brave and the Bold had the best version of Earth - 3.
When entering the other world, it feels like there's actual history between each character. Redhood is the Joker but there's obviously a clear difference between how they view their disfigured faces. While Batman assumed that Owlman is just a more ruthless and closed-off version of himself, it turns out Owlman is just extremely petty guy. Even with a character that only has a few lines like Blue Arrow, you can sense that he has history with Owlman. Whether it's the same as Batman and Green Arrow's rivalry is up for debate. My personal favorite was Silver Cyclone because unlike Red Tornado who sees humanity as admirable, Cyclone sees it as something unattainable and therefore unneeded.
Earth 3 is completely different from the universe that we know, but Brave and Bold made it feel like an actual genuine world with its own story and history.

I love these episodes of The Brave and The Bold! This and Crisis on Two Earths molded my thoughts that Earth 3 isn’t just the Earth of evil versions of characters, but the Earth where the villains on the main reality found hope and escaped the dark road that would turn them into villains. I love the origin for Red Hood, and I wish that it was comic canon.

Brave and the Bold is an absolute must watch for any DC fan or even just anyone looking to get into it. Yeah, it has some of that Silver Age cheese to it, but not only is it very much intentional, it adds to the charm and makes the darker & more serious moments stick out.
The Joker being the Red Hood in an alternate universe is honestly just a cool concept. The scene where he's looking at himself in the mirror and stops himself *just short* of going into a full Joker cackle is masterfull. But when I was a kid, this was my first introduction to any version of Red Hood and it got me into a rabbit hole of finding out about how complex the history of the Joker is. So to me, deep cut references in cartoons isn't just a way of honoring the past. I also can't help but think Red Hood's throwing spade having the "X" in it was a purposeful nod to Teen Titans's Red X character who I 100% believe was DC doing a test run of Jason returning to see how much people would like it. It feels like part of an interesting throughline that I've noticed where they're all weirdly connected:
    - The Reaper: Main suit color is red with a hood-cloak/cape-combo
    - The Phantasm: Has Reaper's gauntlet scythe, grim reaper motif, hood-cloak/cape-combo, someone from Bruce's past come back to "haunt him" (not literally or was the aim for Phantasm but still does the same effect for most of the movie)
    - Red X: Has Phantasm's tattered suit look with it mostly black with a grey secondary color, the Reaper's grim reaper motif with the same skull mask design with no "jaw", one of his gadgets being wrist mounted razor blades (not exactly gauntlet scythe but still), & a possible ID being Jason coming back somehow
    - Red Hood (B&tB): Has a red "X" on the throwing spade that's similar in design to Red X's...well..."X's"
    - Red Hood (Jason): Same bit with Red X of using a red titled alter ego name to hide his identity and Jason being a possible candidate for who it was before it was revealed (wasn't revealed with Red X, but I'm confidant in saying it was Jason there too, with the added bit of "Jason was actually the first Robin, with their personalities somewhat switching, where Dick in the show is a lot more serious and slightly violent like Jason's modern depictions, and Jason on the flip-side was the more chill calm one like Nightwing")
