  • As a 52-year-old lifelong cyclist and coach, Chris Carmichael gets a lot of questions about what he does for core strength work. Chris's view is that greater core strength or stability doesn't directly make you faster or more powerful on the bike, but that it is an important component of living an athlete's lifestyle and it helps prevent discomfort and injuries that could otherwise take you out of the game. Here are the top 10 exercises Chris uses and recommends for cyclists - especially 40+ year old cyclists. Complete all 10 exercises 2-3 times per training session, and incorporate this core strength workout into your training 2-3 times a week when you're not riding as much (i.e. winter), 1-2 times per week when your on-bike training load is higher. I really enjoy using this ball for my work outs. Grip is great and was worth the money

    The sit-and-toss was very impressive, the way you kept the angle of your back from the floor steady even when catching the med ball. As far as twisting your core with your feet immobilized, I think it's o.k. as long as you bounce the ball on the floor on both sides. That makes it 2-4x easier (as opposed to a true Russian Twist) and keeps you from abrupt stopping of the ball in midair while under stress and twisting. Thanks for posting.

    Core training I see as a specific training. Just like Abs. I've got some new fresh ideas from this to include in my work-out with my fitness buddy. You train of course your abs with core but not in the way as an abs training. Great TH-cam video.

    Great vid, Chris.... one comment/suggestion... when I do stability ball passes, I extend my hands behind my head when the ball is in my feet, extended back... make sense? Thoughts? Otherwise, great mix of exercises!

    What weight medicine ball would you recommend? 5lb, 10lb 15lb?

    What are the weight/size of the medicine balls? How big/what size are the stability balls you're using?

      It's more like all those violent twisting and twisting in general is really not good for your spine.

    My couch sucks, it doesnt throw the ball back to me, neither does my 30lb dumbbell.

    Partner? Be creative my friend. Put your feet under something to secure, a couch or other object with some heft, or a set of 20-30lb dumbells will do. Think out of the box.

    Great ideas for exercises to do but before doing any of these I would highly recommend researching proper form and technique because it's poor at best in this video. Too many abrupt movements and the toss-n-twist made me cringe because you should never twist your core with your feet immobilized.

    Carmichael training sys. was just side bussines of lance to get even more money. Carmichael was not actually Lance s coach. For Lance there was one and only Dr Ferrari. Carmichael was smokescreen as Floyd said.

      Lance used core training and squats, the first to do so, all were on EPO to get the best of them he also used EPO and introduced more science

    these exercises conflict completely with the modern notion of avoiding crunches and violent active movements. Plus, you need a prtner. Lame.

    • @fingled
      @fingled 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      people avoid crunches? they need to harden the fuck up!

      fingled do some research, you'll see. Or you can herniate your back. Your choice

    A lot of these require a partner and at least 3 medicine balls so not very practical for a quick core workout.
