- This clip is from the 1997 Disney film production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. The song was actually written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart and was originally in "The Boys from Syracuse."
I don't own any rights to this video, but was disappointed to see that it was missing from TH-cam.
I love how this version of Cinderella adds so much more to the whole step family. Instead of being wicked and cold to Cinderella "just because", this song kind of makes it seem as though the stepmother is a heartbroken woman who doesn't want her daughters to experience the same thing (and who is maybe even jealous of Cinderella because she is still young and hopeful). The stepsisters are depicted in this as followers of their mother, not questioning her actions. #BravoBernadettePeters

Perfectly said. And honestly her point of view in their society is probably seen as right and not questioned. You can tell she still would love to have had that kind of life but she chooses to push it away knowing it wouldn't be possible for her, as if dreaming would only hurt her more and more thus she created a cold persona to deny emotions so could avoid feeling them.

I felt it more when Cate Blanchet was the stepmother two years ago in the recent Disney remake. Bernadette's interpretation didn't make me feel bad for her at all.
This whole production was amazing and I loved how Whitney took a color blind approach to her casting! I used to teach at an inner city school and had this movie on DVD and the rest of the staff had never even heard of it (and this was in Newark NJ near Whitney's home town of East Orange, NJ). I loaned to one of the teachers who showed it to her first graders and the 100% loved it and the subtle message of how families can be mixed race.

I KNOW! that was exactly what I was gonna say! Bernadette Peters did great doing the stepmother and Whitney Houston did pretty good doing the fairy godmother! Bernadette Peters is actually the best singer!! Falling In Love With Love was okay. I definitely enjoyed it but I love how brandy aka Cinderella paints her stepsisters’ toenails and fingernails. It’s strange how Bernadette Peters said “NOOOOOOOOOO!” When Cinderella fit the glass slipper. It’s strange how the shoe didn’t break. And isn’t it cute how the prince made Cinderella twirl ever so kindly?
This Version of Cinderella movie gets all 100% for everything. The songs, the costumes, the comedy, the acting, and everything!!!!! LOVE IT!!!! I watched this when I was a kid a million times!!!!! Till this day I still LOVE IT!!!!!!

100% agree. I grew up watching Annie (the 1982 version) and she is in that as one of the villains. She was also in the cartoon series Animaniacs as Rita the cat. If you want to see another good performance of hers, check out "Into the Woods" where she is the witch.
BREAKING NEWS: Natalie Deselle (Stepsister Minerva) just passed away. So heartbreaking. We all grew up with her performance. So feisty and sassy. What an incredible talent. RIP

+Alicia Coburg I have to agree. As much as I think Bernadette Peters is awesome, especially that singing she just doesn't seem that despicable or wicked. I give her credit that she's trying, but something feels off about her being the step-mother.
Well, what I liked about how Bernadette Peters conveyed the role was how she made the stepmother so passive (more so) aggressive -- which is a true backstabbing/wicked trait in my opinion. I believe that degree of "wickedness" was more applicable for the plot, tone, and whole overlay of the movie! Too much would've taken away from the many, just as important, aspects of the movie. The boiling point where the stepmother annihilates Cinderella with her words, after she found out she went to the ball, was perfect! It was a beautiful dose of hatred in Peters' acting method!
But other than that, she SLAYED in that dress! Which, in my opinion, is a timeless piece! And her voice, my GOD!
I feel like she isn't actually wicked but what she's doing is. Obviously she's a very bitter woman I think the man who she's singing about is the stepsisters dad and he left her. Then I think after that she had a very twisted view of love but then found it again with Cinderellas dad. Then when he died she became completely heart broken but hid it. Both men who she loved betrayed her by leaving her and left her with daughters. I think the reason why she is so horrid to Cinderella is becouse every time she looks at her all she can see is a painful reminder of her dad. Whenever the step mother is being evil to Cinderella she does seem to feel bad but she hides it. I think she always has been a diva but now she's just become very bitter and twisted.

This song low key tells you why the step mom doesn't believe in love anymore. Turning her into a tragic character by using an UP BEAT song as to understand her actions, but not use it as a pass to her abusing Cinderella... Freaking GENIUS!
Bernadette Peters is a national treasure and a legend in every way. This woman slays every role she's given. I've always loved the Rodgers and Hammerstein version, but her being in this made it that much better

the coldness and isolation towards Cinderella in the song always made me think it was shade towards her father. The stepmother make subtle references throughout the movie that she is obviously bitter towards him.

This movie came out the year I was born and I still randomly get these songs stuck in my head.
People can say what they want but she was kinda dropping straight facts tho lol.... maybe a bit extreme, but I think its important to not fall blindly in love. Have a reasonable amount of trust but trust yourself and your gut more, and always be prepared to do what's best for you.

Actually a Rodgers and Hart song (Mountain Greenery) WAS used as an instrumental number into the 1947 RogHamm musical Allegro (a box office flop)
John Lingard It was pretty much "Hey we cast Bernadette Peters so lets add a song because you can't just have her in a musical and not have her sing that would just be cruel."
Well no offense intended but the movie would have been better if the score was all Rogers and Hammerstein material instead of random stuff Rogers composed. The recent Broadway version of Cinderella used most of the music from this version as well as rare Rogers and Hammerstein songs.
My school's doing Cinderella this year, and I'm doing this song for the audition. :) Bernadette is definitely in my Top 10 people who have influenced me as a vocalist. Love love love her forever.

I love the costumes in this version and the fact that they added new songs. However, it will never replace my love for the Leslie Ann Warren version. That was the one I grew up with.

The stepmother def had a problem with love. You can just tell she was angry and she took it out on cinderella cuz cinderella kept talking about true love exists and stuff. And the stepmom wasn't having any of it.
Even when I was a child with no clue about Broadway and very limited internet access to look things up, I couldn't help but notice the lady that stood out with her voice and flair. I had no idea that in the Broadway realm she's basically Queen :v
