Rickles in real life was the exact opposite. It was his schtick in a time when people didnt take themselves so seriously. Being insulted by him was an HONOR lol. His Johnny Carson appearances are legendary. He sold out venues until the day he passed.

I told this story to another reactor to give you an idea of Don real personality. My parents saw him at a casino in the early 70's and he did an almost two hour show and picked on people all over the audience. As you saw he would ask them their names. When the show was ending he went back to each person that he picked on and called them by name and thanked them for allowing him to perform his act and bought each of them a magnum of champagne.

Don Rickles certainly earned his nickname as the "Merchant of Venom" lol
To be insulted by Don Rickles was an honor. It meant you were a somebody and made it and/or he liked you.

Don was a beast with his comedy and he ripped everyone no matter what their color or where they were from. He did not care about who anyone was. This world needs more people that are this way.

He was incredibly funny. I’m 64, and can remember seeing him on TV frequently as a kid. He was very kind offstage. I can remember seeing his true persona a few times in interviews. He was complimentary of people, and very kind. But, his wit onstage was gold. He passed away in 2017 shortly before his 91st birthday.

He always ended every show with a kind word and an uplifting comment about harmony. His "insults" were just humor, he was actually said to be a very lovely person. As for his friendship with Bob Newhart, they were life long friends and their families used to vacation and spend holidays together.

Saw Rickles in Las Vegas. He was the opening act for Frank Sinatra that night. My friends and I were honored to be made fun of by Don that night. He was the best ever at that type of humor. Sad state of affairs that we’ve lost our sense of humor now and Don’s brand of comedy is no longer acceptable. We’re all the worse off for it as a society. Not being able to laugh at ourselves is another step in the road to our ruination. Enjoyed your reaction Phil & Sam. 😊

Don Rickles and Rodney Dangerfield were the 2 best stand up comedians of their time. Heck baby didn't be amongst the top comedians if you add the comedians of all time up until the present.
You will always get a decent amount of views when you react to either one. As far as Don Rickles, I would recommend you look for the videos. And there's many of them where it was Don Rickles on the Johnny Carson show which he did something like 40 appearances on. Those videos are out there on TH-cam and they are absolutely hilarious. The same as Rodney Dangerfield on Johnny Carson. Anyway, in case you're listening. I just thought I would tip you off as to the quickest way to see more Don Rickles and be Guaranteed a great video!

On stage, Rickles was ruthlessly savage. Off stage, he was a very kind hearted man. Also, if you notice, he didn't do ANY "roast" with the intent to hurt someone's feelings. There was absolutely NO malice behind his words. That was another difference in how his roasts were received. A lot of people love to say, "People weren't so sensitive back then", which is partially true. But Don never set out to make someone feel bad. That's why being roasted by him became such an honour.
I actually see a similar method with the newly "blowing up" kid, Matt Rife. He doesn't set out to hurt people's feelings, but even his roasts are designed to make everyone (including the target) laugh. It's a skill that not everyone possesses.

6:34 Mr. T wasn't just a pop culture icon, he was a legend (in certain circles) before his acting career. From Wiki...
"He eventually parlayed his job as a bouncer into a career as a bodyguard that lasted almost ten years. As his reputation grew, he was contracted to guard, among others, clothes designers, models, judges, politicians, athletes and millionaires. His clients included celebrities such as Steve McQueen, Michael Jackson, LeVar Burton, and Diana Ross, and boxers such as Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, and Leon Spinks."

One of the nicest men in show business, and this was just his comedic character. He spared nobody. Blacks, whites, Hispanics, everyone was a target. He's been deed for many years now, but he was also an actor in some very serious dramatic roles. One of the funniest guys ever. Like Robbin Williams, Don Rickles never had his material written down beforehand. Most of it was total improvisation, off the top of his head, in the moment. Sharp as a tack as they say.

Great story about Don, who did have "Mob" contacts including,I believe, his Manager. at Umberto's restaurant, he roasted another minor Mob Leader' Girlfriend and the Guy approached him after the show to say he was angry and looking out for him.. Don was worried and told his connections who made a phone call to the other Guy's overall Boss.

In late 50's, Rickles was doing his act and Frank Sinatra and "friends " came in. After the hubbub died down,Rickles said to Sinatra "Make yourself at home, hit somebody" His "friends "were upset and Sinatra broke the tension by laughing. They became friends after that. He called Rickles "bullethead", maybe a reference to what Sinatra prevented happening to Rickles.

My thoughts as someone who grew up in the last bit of the Baby boomer generation.
Don Rickles was a fantastic comedian. His banter and quick wit made him famous. And here is the kicker. He wasn't doing it maliciously. Everyone knew that at the time. His fans loved how he could tear into someone in jest. People have forgotten That someone making light of someone doesn't mean it's an actual slam.
Much like the Archie Bunker memes where people think we've gone too soft. The entire point of the show was that Archie was a bigot and an ass. And because that, he was usually the one being laughed at not laughed with.
Now, could someone like Don Rickles make it today? I don't believe so. Are we any worse off because of this? No. Not until some people realize the difference between humor and actual bigotry.

There was a tribute for him when he was very old, and he was told that he never roasted Johnny Depp, who was there. So Don played along, saying at the beginning yeah yeah, Johnny I know, I know, don't worry. Then Don waited almost until the very end to roast him. Classic move.

Rickles was friends with Frank Sinatra at a time when Sinatra was the biggest thing around and that is where Don basically earned his name. He did stand up everywhere but was big in Las Vegas people lovingly called him Mr Warmth. When he came out on stage it was to a bull fighting song they said because everyone knew someone was going to get gored!!!!!

at 18:45 - the joke he tells about, "When you go to bed tonight, try to listen for a clock." George Peppard and Mr. T were on a show called the A-Team, which always used improvised explosives. I'm guessing the joke is referencing that and can be explained like this, "George doesn't like that his role in the show is getting smaller, so if you hear a clock ticking, it might be a bomb in your room to bump you off so he can get more screen time on the show."

When he started out, he'd frequently get heckled and realised that he got more laughs dealing with the hecklers than with his material, so he went with it. But towards the end of his shows, he'd remind people that his jokes were just that... Jokes. They were meant to be funny, but never Malicious. And he always Balanced his shows by being as savage with his own race (the Jewish) as he did with anyone else.

I remember the days, when people watched the "Tonight Show" just because Don Rickles was on, The rumor was, he had to keep his language clean! We used to watch just to see if he would break the agreement!

It's important to note that even as an insult comic, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who had a bad word to say about Don. It was all his act and he ended each show explicitly explaining that and how he loves everyone and it's all in jest.

He had a TV series called CPO Sharkey. It was about a cheap penny officer running a training platoon in San Diego on the naval base aboard the u.S.S recruit. By the way, the u.S.S recruit is a ship that's not in the water, but it's still in the register of naval ships. Anyway, he had subbed for Johnny Carson one night and somehow broke his cigarette box on the desk and the next night Johnny Carson discovered the box broken and when he found out about it he also learned that Don rickles was filming his TV show right next door to him. So Johnny got up and he went over and he barked into the middle of Don rickles recording of his show and what happened him with some of the best glorious, fun stuff. It's on TH-cam. Just put rickles. Johnny Carson and that video should be in there someplace

Four out of three people admit they're bad with fractions.
Don was a constant -- he was always there. His best friend, Bob Newhart will be 95 later this year.
Celebrities loved being roasted by Don. Johnny Carson had him on his show scores of times. Johnny called Don "Mr. Warmth" or the Master Of Mayhem." Elvis loved to be put down by Don.

Don could insult you to your face and you know he is still a friend. One of the few people who got away with it all. These jokes were intense in his day. But comedy was totally free of any hangups. He got what he gave too. Thats how it was before everyone became so sensitive.
