  • ►This week on the Yippie Cayenne build, Ben takes us through his impromptu trip to Colorado for Gridlife. After the suspension and exterior upgrades were installed at Eurowise Performance and the Cayenne passed its first test through the Uwharrie National Forrest, the big pig drove back north to FCP Euro HQ in Connecticut for its last few modifications. Yeah, that’s right, there was still more to do-including some Baja Design LP6's and LP4's, a Thule rooftop tent and awning, and a few other bits and bobs. What’s an off-road SUV without some proper lights, right? While Ben and Mike were chipping away at installing the last few bits and setting up a photoshoot, they received a phone call that would end with a plan to send the Cayenne out to Colorado for the #GRIDLIFE Alpine Horizon festival.

    Don't feel bad! Part of the excitement is dealing with problems - that's what makes it an "adventure." This is why offroading is better than meeting your buddies at a Starbucks - anyone can do that. You brought a bunch of people together which wouldn't have happened otherwise.
    Not to make the driver feel bad, but if he had gone just a little bit slower into the river, he probably would not have hydro-locked.
    Just be glad that you're part of something so cool.

    So at this point, if you go slow and steady, what would you say the highest point of the cayenne to go or not to go into the water? I always thought it was about the height of the wheels? I mean I had water go over my hood, (splashes) not river.. Just curious cuz I have one lol and I would go cross that river too lol

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Technically from factory its approved to cross through 21.8" of water, that said with factory shrouds installed and the foam to knock down splashing it can be more, that said the intakes are in a slightly suspect spot, and given the right conditions.... this can happen 😔

    • @SteveBassen
      @SteveBassen 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the first Cayenne took it much slower, the quicker speed caused that water to splash up into the intakes for sure... they're mounted pretty high for a factory setup but still very marginal for that deep of a river.

    I wonder how those other Cayenne’s got thru the water so easy. I thought they looked like good off road vehicles, but with the electrical and intake so low they definitely ain’t for any trails that have water.
    They shouldn’t get on to dude. If one guy knew all that about it he should of told them “Hey we making this for Overland, but it can’t cross any water deeper than X feet (looked about 1.5 feet 🤦‍♂️) and that’s even if we put a snorkel on it cause of the air pump, wiring, and other stuff is low af.” Like that is important info. Anything that will directly affect your main plan in a major negative way like: Plan: build an off-road vehicle. Problem: Your buddy, co-worker, boss, teammate choose a vehicle that takes massive amount of work to cross shallow water.
    It is a shame they had to leave it there. It seems a well built full size 4x4 truck could pull them back to the road with decent equipment and someone in the Porsche that knows how to control a vehicle being towed. Heck build a front tire vehicle dolly to off road standard and it would almost be easy. Just got to remember you got it back there and adjust accordingly. Of course some manufacturers put in drivetrain components that are known to break or are just enough for the power the motor has. I know folks that with 1-3 year old Silverados that had transmissions go out cause they put rims and tires on it, cause they pulled an rv (within weight limit), or just cause. Meanwhile read that I can put a SBC 350 in my T100 with a bell house adapter. The clutch and transmission toyota put in to attach to a 3.0 V6 is plenty strong for a 350 V8. Like lmfao. Toyota putting in stronger transmissions and clutches for a 3.0 than Chevy does for a 5.7 🤦‍♂️. They lucky them Silverados look so good, the sbc’s are so compact of a V8, and that truck people are so loyal they will buy their Chevy, Ford, or Dodge knowing they gonna have to do work on it.

    Space Coast Rovers co-founder says: we cross swamp here in FL. Its more than snorkel. Theres. Extended tube vents on diffs & transes. RTV every wire connection under the hood for ignition, engine controls, off switches for radiator fans, so much more. Even the air suspension air intake in that new wabco unit needs lifted or relocated. Got chocolate milk in all your drive train. But will be surprised, unless bent rods, how it recovers... Get back on that horse. Its still a 130k vehicle thats made with great naterials and will bounce back. Change the. Rods or LKQ the short block in worse case. Weve seen 44" rat motor single cab monster trucks disappear over the roofline in swamp and come back. Get back on the horse.

    9:09 cayenne enters water, by 9:11 cayenne is hydrolocked. Water ingestion probably occurred at 9:10 with that moderately large second splash, which occurred due to a modestly higher entry speed than Berg's cayenne. doing water crossings in these without snorkels- you're really living on the edge

    Was there an issue with the airbox that contributed to this?

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's safe to say the lack of factory shrouding (removed) did not help in this case, it likely would have knocked down that initial splash during the (too fast) of an approach into the water. Ultimately that allowed water into the intake, and then from there into the combustion chamber. Stay tuned though, things get interesting!

      PLOT TWIST

  • @johnathonmcalister6645
    @johnathonmcalister6645 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So sad ☹Slow and steady, and know your limits. When fording deep water, you need to watch for vents or other holes for things like transmission, air compressor, etc..., and the wiring harnesses (if they aren't waterproof). Like you point out, there are harnesses under the floor on both sides (which causes problem if the drains get plugged) - and if you are deep enough, then water can come in through the drains. I'm a bit surprised you got hydrolock - the intakes are pretty high (although the bottom of the air filter is low, the exit of the air filter is on top). Even if you don't get hydrolock, contaminated fluids and such can be a problem later on. It's my impression that vehicles where deep water is anticipated need special treatment to prevent water ingress (snorkel is just one item). Coil-overs may actually be more reliable than air suspension in this case.

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally the case Johnathon - live and learn on this one. The reality was the front shroud removed previously that helps knock water down from the intakes would have likely knocked down the initial splash, the water coming into the cabin certainly happened over time as the outside pressure built up while getting it out. Stay tuned to see how the team tries to revive and rebuild the Yippie Cayenne in the coming weeks.

      Its worse than that they need to strip out all the bare sonically welded copper connections in the floor that go right along the floor both sides of the car and upinto the dash and solder all the connections and then seal it all with liquid heatshrink otherwise your going to see massive electrical gremlins in the future And you need to get it before all the copper wire turns black and is unsolderable.

  • @austingtir
    @austingtir 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You need to pull the carpets seats and interior and solder all the bare copper wire splices (wrapped in cloth tape in the floor from porsche/VW) and solder all the connections (theres a shit ton of them) then seal with liquid heatshink and heatshrink otherwise a future episode is going to be wondering why you have electrical gremlins and codes all over the shop...

      Solder on a Car? Are you the Devil?

    • @austingtir
      @austingtir ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No VW is the devil. The factory connections are sonically welded bare copper wrapped in fabric tape. What do you think happens when that gets wet? (and it will one way or the other eventually). Solder is a million times better than that and theres no way these connections will ever break because they are in bundles of wires well over an inch in diameter with extra wire there so theres no pull or delfection on them whatsoever as long as you tape them into the bundle right. In the engine bay yeah it would be a bad idea in the interior of the car with this bundle of wire under thick foam carpet its perfectly fine and imo one of the better methods of fixing the issue. The only other way is fully sealable crimp splices which imo will be a bigger mess than this and just a pain in the but to do due to all the different diameter wire you need to repair in there.

    As someone who has done a LOT of off-roading in the Rockies, Montana/Idaho/Wyoming in my modified Land Rover Discovery 2, I can tell you that you entered the water WAY TOO FAST. That was it. I don't see any raised air intake so probably just stock airbox/inlet. Don't be so down... chalk it up to bad beginner's luck, lack of proper knowledge and experience.

      100% the case Ben knew it immediately, poor judgement and lack of slowing things down to properly execute the crossing. The stock intakes missing the factory shroud did not help the situation at all either ^.^ Live and Learn thats for sure

    Why did you go in so fast??? ugh.

    To be fair, these German SUVs can barely take the stress from speed bumps around town. You bump a curb in a 4motion Tiguan and the front end needs to be rebuilt.

      Comparing an MQB (Golf/Jetta) based Tiguan to a Cayenne is silly

      @@billybarty100 the Cayenne/Touareg/Q7 platform is not delicate. The guy pushed the vehicle too far. Just the fact it got to that water feature is testament alone.

      If a german wants to get serious about offroad they should look to landrover, which has a lot of german content. ZF tans, wabco, bmw engines in some, bosch systems..... In the classic it has as its heart a 1962 pontiac all alum motor- 3.9/4.2. But the days of $2000 dream classics may be gone until gas goes above $6..

      We've suggested to Ben taking up biking and running. To his defense the Ford was Flood situation impossible to avoid, this one.... is on him 😂
