Extreme Championship Wrestling legend, Sabu returns with a brand new series on Title Match Network. Here Sabu talks about his infamous feuds vs Terry Funk.
Who can forget the barbed wire match where Sabu rips open his bicep? Hear why Sabu credits Funk with being the first major star to let him do his own style of wrestling.
Most fans may know Sabu from his ECW (Extreme Championship Wrestling) days but he was wrestling for a good 10 years prior to his breakout success. Also, Terry Funk already had three decades of experience before reinventing his career in ECW.
Sabu's uncle, the Original Sheik, was good friend's with Terry's father, Dory Funk Sr. In turn, the Sheik actually help a young Terry Funk break into the business during the mid 1960s.

I saw Terry Funk wrestle at ECW in Philly immediately after work one evening , so I arrived late and was wearing a dressy grey pinstriped suit. As Terry was about to make his entrance, he had to walk past me in the rear. He quickly came out of character as he made his entrance and politely said “Excuse me sir” and just as quickly returned to his Terry Funk persona…As someone who literally grew up with professional wrestlers and wrestling, this brief episode struck me funny.

The Funks... Dory Sr, Dory Jr and Terry were born in Hammond Indiana where I also was too. Always been a fan of them.

There was a video (has since been taken down) of Buzz Sawyer wrestling around 1982 in Florida and he was so far ahead of his time when he was in shape. He was working like Dynamite Kid and Tiger Mask around the same time in terms of speed in the ring and making everything look credible and with wild bumps. Doesn't get talked about how good he truly was.

The barbed wire massacre was painful to watch. Sabu and Terry Funks toughness is legendary.

That was one of the few times when the only noise you heard from the ECW crowd was an uncomfortable, concerned murmur. It was usually "HOLY SH*T!" but with that match it was "...holy sh*t..."

Thank you Sabu for giving up so much of your body to entertain the fans.......the homicidal, genocidal, suicidal moniker truly stuck for Sabu. The Born To Be Wired match was a one of kind thing.....my god what those two put themselves through in that war.......truly violent and hardcore.

Uhhh.....no. Terry Funk was a legend and a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion (when the NWA Title was THE title) LONG before ECW came to be. Terry gave a lot to help make ECW become the promotion that forced change. Without it, the Attitude Era never happens.
