Even for a car guy, more a true Ferrari guy who has 12 different Ferrari models in my garage alone, I have to confess I love the Portofono especially its softness, and its confortness. I don’t desire to have a hard car drive hard everyday. This Portofino fits my need for a softer, comfort car for that day, it is right there to fulfill the desire.

"For those of you who just want to tootle around town and want the prestige of the badge". "It's not special enough for a place in the garage". Ok, especially if you are The Car Guys looking for a super car. Got it.
Me, I've had my time in super cars, did some running with the bulls, been chased by the cops, challenged by the Chevys and pursued by every minivan owner with three kids, a dog and an iPhone. Honestly, I'm done trying to squeeze my Lamborghini into the confines of a busy metropolitan area and it's outskirts. I live near NYC and it would take a day's drive to get far enough away to give my machine the room to really open it up. It's been like dating a supermodel and it's wearing a little thin. Don't get me wrong, I'm still up for seriously aggressive driving on a track in a track car, where my skills can really be put to the test.
BUT, I now want something slightly less killer, more enjoyable, something my wife will climb into, something sporty for the back roads. I don't care to be noticed, but I want a precision machine, Italian styling, highly skilled craftsmanship and the pedigree of a Ferrari. And, the Portofino checks all those boxes. In my opinion, it is a gorgeous machine.

I agree with OP this is the only Ferrari I would buy, living in NYC, not everyone wants a flat out space ship looking light speed going super car, if I had the money I'll get this over everything else, it's good looking exotic quick enough and badge prestige.

Portofino is a fantastic car that does exactly what it was designed to do. Not all ferraris are supposed to drive like a 458 speciale... A certain demographic wants a comfortable luxurious and sporty ferrari that does not wake up the whole street when it starts. A ferrari to cruise along the french riviera... its perfect for that. i'm sure every wife will prefer a portofino over the 488.

And historically seen Ferrari was never a supercar-only brand. They made GTs and super-GTs in every generation. So I would not say the Portofino isn‘t a proper Ferrari. It‘s just not a proper supercar. And I like that.

In my experience a convertible is so much more enjoyable then anything else on the road.
With hard top you can use it whole year round, and remember those old most beautiful places on the coast are usually accessible on the B or C roads (narrow, bumpy roads), so in my opinion this would be the closest thing to a perfect car for me. It's beautiful, practical, still fast when you want and comfortable enough for long drives and last but not least - i't a Ferrari. I'm really impressed with what they have done, holding back but not really if you know what I mean. Remember, to be really loved - you need to have some flaws.

For anyone who has already owned and driven iconic Ferraris like the 458, 488, F12 and upwards in the range; it is not realistic to expect these individuals to like any entry level Ferrari. I don’t think these individuals are this car’s target market.
However, for new owners of Ferraris; and in the modern world - many; and considering the price point it comes to market at, it is a brilliant vehicle. Absolutely brilliant! Beautiful car, great sound, high quality build, the cabin is fantastic. Compared to cars like the Jaguar convertible, Porsche convertible, Aston Martin convertible etc, they just don’t match this car. Very comfortable. And this car can be used daily very easily, whereas the other Ferraris just aren’t built for this. And the controls around the steering wheel are actually very easy to operate.
Ferrari have done a great job with this car. But it’s certainly not for hardcore Ferrari enthusiasts who get their kicks from 488s, F8s, 298s etc.

Having just been introduced to the brand and the various models I chose a Portofino. Checked as many reviews as I could in the process - drove a lot, reviewed a lot. Must say this was the least balanced, focusing on the negative where the opportunity arose, and failed to acknowledge the positives with a flippancy and condescendence. Each to his own I guess.

Thank you for being one of the few TH-camrs to keep it honest! After driving the Portofino, I couldn't agree more that it's just TOO soft. The steering is even worse than an Audi and the car has no soul or edge. The fact that there's not even a 'Race' setting like every other Ferrari tells you everything you need to know. It's not a bad car by any means but this is not a car that traditional Ferrari buyers will enjoy driving.
It's now very easy to spot which TH-camrs are full of baloney and simply looking to cater to Ferrari corporate so that they can get on Ferrari's A list. It's a bloody shame but we are grateful that you're at least not a sellout.

@@TheCarGuysTV Actually you are one of the only negative reviews on the New Portofino right now... google it and see for yourself .. your opinion is definitely in the minority group. Of course you are certainly entitled to your opinion just as the other positive reviewers are. I checked out some of your previous reviews and you seem to put down other turbo boosted cars you have reviewed.. .You seem to praise your 458 and claim its even better than the newer 488 .. again your review and opinion is in the low minority group. your partial to naturally aspirated cars? Is this it ? Its hard to fight it though thats been the new trend among all the top auto makers obviously .. turbos are the new norm in performance and efficienc.. and they keep getting better and better. To say the Portofino is "soft" , like some did about the California does not seem to be the right term anymore for the Portofino .. again your entitled to it .. The Portofino has 29 more HP and 160 more in torque than your 458 . Car and Driver has the Portofino going 0-60 in 3.1 seconds and 1/4 mile in 10.9 seconds, . How is that soft?.. Perhaps does it accelerate too smoothly and not as abrupt compared to the 458? The numbers suggest the Portofino is as fast as your 458 or very close to it... In summary the Portofino may not be as loud, abrupt, bumpy and low to the ground.. But thats what many like about it.. and this is why Ferrari designed it.. It will likely be the top seller again. Cheers

I also distinctly remember my first drive in a Portofino owned by a private collector. I purchased it from him but I couldn't help but feel just like the guy in the video. I was underwhelmed in many ways especially the thrust. I had never driven a Ferrari before so I wasn't driving it right. In the Portofino you really have to put your foot in it to extract the performance and when you do it feels very good! Now I love the damn thing as I have learned how to drive it better. The traction is ridiculous.

However how suitable are you Sir to review a car type you personally dislike? Isn’t it like me not wanting to have a tv reviewing the newest upper class Samsung tv, and then stating it’s not for me?
I think you should judge it by how good it is for its intended audience, not for you personally.
We understand you only want a pure-race Ferrari and your message that Portofino isn’t one, but how good is it for its intended audience?
That’s the answer we didn’t get in detail.

I guessed straight away you wouldn't like it damian, I have never sat in any ferrari myself so cannot comment on driving dynamics, but in terms of looks its still too tall and not wide enough in my eyes, the same as the california before it. So that must affect the handling characteristics somewhat. To me it just seems more like a celebrity hair dresser., or even the ambassador's wife type of car. Might sound a bit harsh, but maybe that's whom it was designed for who knows.
I appreciate your honesty when reviewing cars damian, as opposed to the usual 'influencer' channel suspects. That are all paid, wined and dined for favourable reviews and marketing. Keep up the good work. Sir.

I test drove the Portfino M 8-speed and it left no great impression on me! I have owned two Jaguar XJ-S V12 convertibles and those are a pure GT cruiser. The Portofino M is in the same category. It was fast but going fast was not it’s thing! It is an open topped cruiser. I didn’t feel special in it. It also felt cramped in the cabin somewhat like a targa top car. I want another proper open car. Like the old 275 GTS for open topped grand touring.

I remember when i took out a Ferrari California from car club ecurie25 (way back when) and i disliked it before i even drove it. portofino looks better than Cali but just not right for the true enthusiast! good vid - thanks

The original Cali is better than the T or the Portofino simply because it’s got a NA V8 and it sounds brilliant. Cars like this aren’t about racetrack performance, they’re GT cars, they should be easier to drive than a 488, not everyone wants a super car.

The sound of the car was so bad for a Ferrari. Could you compare it to Porsche 911 Carrera 992 sound? You mentioned a bad sound briefly in the review of 992, but I would like to hear more about that important part of any sports car. A video about that would be awesome.

I think that it is not only a Ferrari problem but a sports car of today problem. Engines get smaller and turbocharged and they are not desirable enough anymore. I understand why this is done but I dont have to like it and I believe if it continues like this there will be a time in the future where sport cars become irrelevant.

I test drove a Portofino at the dealer which is conveniently located across the street from my house. Interestingly I went in just to look at it but before I could say anything the sales rep said I'll bring it right around for you to drive. I didn't complain. It was their only car that had just arrived. My current baby is a 2014 Jaguar XKR convertible. I was looking for a possible replacement so I was directly comparing the Portofino to the Jag. My first impression as I was driving through the parking lot was that the Portofino sits much higher. I felt like I was looking down at everything. I didn't like that feeling and felt much better positioned in the Jag. On the road the Portofino in comfort mode had a harder ride than the Jag in its dynamic mode. The Portofino would shudder over bumps and the Jag was smooth. The Jag has an active suspension which senses the road surface 10000 times a second and will instantly soften the ride over a bump and then tighten back to race setting instantly. The best of both worlds. The Ferrari is fixed in what ever mode you have it in. Interior wise I did not feel special in the Portofino. The leather almost looked like rubber and the environment was cold, uninviting and cheap in comparison. The Jag has more comfortable seats with sumptuous leather and some beautiful wood trim. The driving excitement just wasn't there in the Portofino. The roar of the Jag's supercharged V-8 was far more enjoyable to my ears. The Portofino may be faster off the line but floor the Jag at 80 and the pull of all that supercharged v8 torque instantly throws you back. As far as looks the Portofino is too busy in comparison. The Jag has the cleanest and most beautiful lines. I texted photos of the Portofino to a friend and she said its kind of cool looking but keep your Jag its prettier. Mind you I wanted and was almost expecting to like the Portofino better than the XKR and was surprised and disappointed at the experience. After a couple of miles on the test drive I told him I had enough and was ready to turn around. I guess it is a water downed Ferrari compared to a top tier Jaguar.

This is unfortunately a terrible review. If you are reviewing a morocycle, you don't say it is bad because it has 2 wheels only. Same thing, you are not reviewing Ferrari's mid engine V8 and to trying to compare the cars is either arrogant or naive.

It's nice to see that the money you guys clearly have to splash on these things doesn't just go on the newest pretty thing that comes along. If it ain't good enough, it's not coming home! That's really refreshing to see on a TH-cam car channel. Btw if you want a back to back comparison with a DC5 against the old DC2 for a video, get in touch. I'd be happy to bring mine along.

Actually you are one of the only negative reviews on the New Portofino right now... google it and see for yourself .. your opinion is definitely in the minority group. Of course you are certainly entitled to it just as the other positive reviewers are. I checked out some of your previous reviews and you seem to put down other turbo boosted cars as well.. .You seem to praise your 458 and claim its even better than the newer 488 .. lol... you prefer naturally aspirated track cars? Is this it ? Its hard to fight the new trend among all the top auto makers obviously .. turbos are the new norm in performance and efficiency.. and they keep getting better and better. To say the Portofino is "soft" , like some did about the California does not seem to be the right term anymore. .. again your entitled to it .. The Portofino has 29 more HP and 160 more in torque than your 458 . The 458 is a great car but its not a GT car.. and not for everyone. Car and Driver has the Portofino going 0-60 in 3.1 seconds and 1/4 mile in 10.9 seconds, . How is that soft?.. Perhaps does it accelerate too smoothly and not as abrupt compared to the 458? Is it too refined and has too much technology in it for your taste for a Ferrari? The numbers suggest the Portofino is as fast as your 458 or very close to it... In summary the Portofino may not be as loud, abrupt, bumpy and low to the ground.. But thats what many like about it.. and this is why Ferrari designed it.. It will likely be the top seller again. Cheers
