  • This week, Ferrari UK have been kind enough to loan me a brand new Portofino. The perfect car for a freezing British winter. However, I'm not going to let the weather get in the way of my enjoyment. In today's video, I give you a walkaround the car and talk you through the huge spec sheet on this quarter million pound Ferrari.

      @Uncle Joe S CaliT has proven pretty solid in reliability. None of key components (engine, trans, magniride suspension, folding roof) are new to the Porto, so no reason to think it would be any different. Heard a few little trim & related issues, as with any Ferrari, but still streets ahead of Mac or Aston in that dept.
      And eff off with the Kia comparison...very different segment, different purposes, etc. Like interrupting a discussion on Scotch to say Absolut is cheaper and you like it. Yah, great, so what, go away

      @Uncle Joe S Totally agree, buying a Ferrari -- or frankly, any car over $150k -- is an illogical decision. There are objectively better vehicles for way less. No-one is arguing with that. That's why Ferrari make 9,000 cars a year and Hyundai make north of a million. But that's not going to stop me illogically buying a Ferrari when I can afford to step up :)

Even though the back seats are useless I still like to have them for emergencies/luggage, and it looks like a 2 seater, the back seats don’t ruin the proportions by taking up too much room

      @Uncle Joe S Why is a Ferrari a bad daily driver in your opinion?

    • @FF-qv8en
      @FF-qv8en 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Uncle Joe S Was just trying to figure out which angle you're coming from. I have one which I've used as a daily since I got it, (so around 9 months now). Insurance is fairly reasonable and if you don't go crazy on the options like this press one, negotiate a discount, (or if you pick one up used), it'll set you back around £160k. Not much more than a Bentley Continental/brand new McLaren 570s/very high spec high end AMG, all of which I've seen plenty of people dailying. And out of all those, the Ferrari will probably have the best residual value, from my personal experience anyway.
      7 years free servicing and 4 years intl warranty so no maintenance to worry about. Fairly economical with fuel if you drive sensibly (hard to drive sensibly in a Ferrari but it is possible). Decent sized boot, and plenty of storage space inside. Yes, obviously not many people have £160k lying around to spend on an everyday car, but if you do, it's probably one of the best cars around to daily.

    • @FF-qv8en
      @FF-qv8en 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Uncle Joe S Haha no worries you weren't being rude, unfortunately stupid costs come part and parcel with a car experience like this and I think it's worth sharing all the good and bad aspects of owning and driving cars like these! I can see where you're coming from. I live in central London where Ferraris/Lambos etc are very common place and used frequently by a lot of Londoners as daily drivers. Over here, if you have a subtle spec you can get away with relative anonymity due to the sheer amount of other flashy hypercars rolling around that pull more attention over a subtly spec'd Portofino. Don't get me wrong, as much as I love dailying a car like this, I also have a VW Polo for when the stress of driving something like that becomes too much and I need a break, and it's honestly very freeing, lmao.
      An MX-5 is an excellent car and a good choice. Enjoy your sleep and have a wonderful day my dude, take care and cheers!

    Great review.
    4:18 This is actually a smart move by Ferrari. As Ferrari's entry level model, the Portofino is likely to be driven much more frequently than higher spec models and so the extra ride height grants you the extra clearance you'll need to get over all those speed bumps. Similar reasoning with the thicker tyres - heavier use calls for thicker tyres which give a more comfortable ride.

    • @h0R1Z3N
      @h0R1Z3N 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some people refer to the Portofino as the "Housewives Ferrari". But to be honest, aside from the GTC4 Lusso, there's no other model that's getting driven more frequently. I would take one and daily if I had the money.

    One thing needing clarification, the carbon 'cupholder' 6:35 at £1400 is a tad misleading. The Carbon Cupholder also includes all the carbon bits surrounding it, as well as the carbon bits around the window/roof operation buttons and the key slot. Ironically the £1600 carbon bridge has less (visible) carbon than the £1400 carbon 'cupholder' (which isn't *just* the cupholder). Either way doesn't make the options list of this and most modern Ferraris any less obscene. Good old Ferrari doing their usual Ferrari things.

  • @FF-qv8en
    @FF-qv8en 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The roof is even cooler when you realise that you can operate it while driving - something you couldn't do in the Cali/Cali T. It then becomes significantly less cool when you actually operate the roof while driving, and have all the crap in your boot fall out onto the road. (Yes this happened to me, yes I'm an idiot.)

    • @Runoratsu
      @Runoratsu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the 3rd gen Miata for how they handled the folding roof for it: it's just the front half of the rear deck that lifts up like an oversized wing, and the real cargo compartment stays shut ( th-cam.com/video/WGLaWfUnc8k/w-d-xo.html ). Although I wish the roof storage and the trunk were connected-they are separate compartments in that car.

    • @FF-qv8en
      @FF-qv8en 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Runoratsu The 488 Spider has a similar mechanism for the folding roof, however this makes sense as the engine is at the rear. The Portofino's roof is also much bigger since it's a 2+2 hence I guess having such a mechanism that opens the boot is a necessary evil. :(

    I may have missed it, but how many torsos actually fit in that trunk? Asking for a friend! Apart from that, great review. Ferrari really are in a league of their own.

    Silly questions: Is this front end high enough so that it doesn't scratch on sloped driveways (that are prevalent in the US)? What could one do for that (avoid frequently replacing front end air spoiler) ... installing an air suspension kit?

    Ferrari have nailed it with the looks on the Portofino. The California always looked a bit unbalanced.

  • @dcarbs2979
    @dcarbs2979 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    There was a time when Ferrari deliberately had no options. It was "that's the car, take it or leave it". The paint option alone was almost the price of my first Ferrari (308), but I don't think you can get sub-£20k Ferraris that aren't money pits anymore.

    A question to Jay. What's the difference between an Sports, Super and Hyper Car ? Good Review of the Ferrari.
    In terms of styling, I find the front a bit weird in that I cannot help feeling that the car has an extremely prominent "smile" which is at odds with say the 458/488 which is more aggressive ? Just a personal observation. I'm sure I'll get used to though.

    Great thorough review Jay. I get you can only compare to cars you've driven, but sorry, I can't see anyone cross-shopping a Porto and Jag F-Type. Aston DB11, Bentley GT V8, Porsche 911 Turbo are surely more realistic for someone who wants supercar sense-of-occasion in a more comfortable, less bling package than a mid-engined supercar I love the Porto but then I'm weird and actually really like the CaliT too... drives great, feels special, pretty solid reliability and looking very attractive at current deals

  • @bobpachner7528

    Excellent video. Looking forward to the driving part. This car, while similar on paper to the GTC and Jag, has an entirely different feel about it. The GTC and Jag are fine cars but not the equal of the Porto on a daily driver basis in so many aspects aside from straight empirical data. On paper a Dodge Hellcat will beat cars many times its price in acceleration but that doesn't make it an equal proposition. Similar situation here. This car is a cut above those, but perhaps not so different from similarly priced choices which would be much closer in the level of refinement, luxury, public perception and making every drive an occasion.

    Why is the carbon driver zone an essential option?

  • @mmonkeyman1403
    @mmonkeyman1403 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've seen the base base model and I think it's really enough. If you add the carbon drivers zone, that's all the added functionality you need.

    • @FF-qv8en

      Will need Magneride too but aside from that you're pretty much right. Alternatively you can (In the UK anyway) pick up a decent spec and slightly used Portofino for ~£160k anyway, so win/win if you're not stuck on getting a brand new one.

    • @mmonkeyman1403
      @mmonkeyman1403 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FF-qv8en true. I've never really had a problem with the California either, you can find a nicely spec'd model in the usa for as little as 80k.
