Your previous video on this event is the first one I watched back when I fell in love with running after years of being very inconsistent and you're still one of my favourite running channels. Thank you for taking us with you on all your adventures.
Well done, Maaike! In a marathon, you go to hell then you cross the finish line. In an ultra-marathon, you go to hell and come out of it, then go to hell, then come out of it again...again and again and again...all the way to the finish line (speaking from experience).
I ran this for the 2nd time this year. Last year i got 110k and this year i managed to hit 150k. I had to stop after because my feet were covered in blisters. Watching tbis struggle has brought me to tears. I dont think I've run a race as humbling as this one. I feel every moment of her pain.
Thanks Göran for this mini docu following a Dutch lady. You're always so enthusiastic; brings a smile on my face. Would love to see you doing this crazy indoor race next year.
This experience is so relatable. I don't think that most people who haven't run ultra distances fully appreciate not only the physical demands, but the mental ones. But the body is an amazing thing, and is capable of remarkable feats when pushed, especially when you have such a strong support team.
@@acasualviewer5861 Maybe you should try a "backyard ultra"? There you only run 6,7 km every hour. Then you rest and start again and again until you give up. I did it this year and for me it felt much easier than the marathon I ran last year. I got much further than I thought I would be able to (80k).
I did a group project with Maaike in the first year of Aerospace Engineering in Delft (13 years ago!). She was already very determined then, very fun to see it resulted in this. Thanks for the great video Göran and gefeliciteerd Maaike!
Wow Goran, this is one of the most beautifully crafted videos you have produced. It had a similar vibe to Chefs Table on Netflix - stunning combination of well crafted shots, impactful music and deep human stories. Well done.
Thank you Göran. This brought tears to my eyes. There is something universal about taking on that struggle, enduring, facing pain, trying, failing, going further... And also being supported, cheered on, loved. Like in real life. This year I ran my first ultra (backyard ultra) to test my limits. So I can somehow relate.
so inspiring, we can do so unbelievable big things if only we put our minds to it, its not only the distance, its running in circles for so long! awesome job, well done!
Holy shit, waar haal je dan die energie nog vandaan? Cool to see her push through, even though life was all shades of pain for pretty much 24 hours straight. Maybe, in a couple of years when I've run a couple of marathons, I can give this a go as well. This was inspiring, thank you all!
Such a nice video! I really like the editing and storytelling. Well done, Maaike! Impressive what you pulled off. Don't know how you found the (mental) energy. 💪
Wow, what an epic challenge! Running an ultra through the night, in circles, in a basement! There is an ultra race near Bath, England called ‘The Tunnel’, where you run out and back 100 times in a dark underground disused railway tunnel, time limit is 55 hours. Any takers? 😉👋
@@goranwinblad i'll be releasing my second documentary on it early next year (The Tunnel), i've been and filmed it a few times now in its entirety and make 100+ mile ultra-marathon/mountain documentaries, if you have any questions about it send us an email.
the mental willpower is insanely strong, my calves cramped up at my first half marathon last week and I was so down and almost didn't even want to finish because I could only walk
I took up running in 2021. Saw your original video, and was amazed at it! Found a 24 hr endurance run on a school track in 2022. Nineteen people signed up for the 24 hr option, and only three stayed for the entire time. I was one of them! I covered 62.75 miles in the time. Came in 4th in the men's division, and 7th overall. Thanks for your videos. They are very inspiring!
@@elcour Three of the 19 who signed up for the 24 hr stayed the whole time. I know that there were three runners who left when they reached 100 miles, another dropped out due to an injury when he got 75 miles in.
If I'm looking at the right UTMB profile, she's finished TDS twice, each time running for over 33 hrs, so that suggests this injury really held her back, even if 24hrs in that basement is very different from running in the alps :D
i had a patella tendon injury recently after some static stretching and i think i'm done with statics. i like being flexible but like you've shown it's not really positively correlated with running performance.
Nice production quality and storytelling! One note though - very confusing that direction changed from counter clock-wise to clock-wise? Is this just the editing, or do they flip in the race as well?
notes to self. cold mussle streating is a no. sleep is better 3 days before, night before u never sleep well so focus on 3 days before to do rly good 10h sleep, eat way more day before, use a shoe 1 or 2 sizes higher, change softer wet socks often is better than dry sports socks, hidrate lots ( clear pee ) and eletrolites if your body feel stiff, leave cafeine for after 16h running, introduce protein solids after 6h, start mixing carb solids after 8h running, eat lots 3h before start. lose shorts is better than licra, don't use briefs underware.
I have no idea how I would do at this race. I don't know how I could cope with it mentally, going O and O and O again. I don't even think the physical aspect is the most daunting for me. I very strangely am starting to think I'd like to try something like that.
Thanks! Watch the end of the video, then you will see I have to now 😅 actually looking forward to finally try it after being on the sideline documenting it.
I also have a had a hard time understanding it but I think the attraction in a way is how unattractive it is the boring indoors environment makes it a pure mental fight for 24 hours you don’t get any help from an inspiring environment.

It was my first video I watched from this channel when I just started falling in love with running. Agreed - one of the best running channels.

I've run the marathon (more recently attempted the marathon) it was enough of a struggle.. this is far above my league.

I like running in Bislett in the winter - so cool to see what is going in there. Not so often that TH-cam videos hit so close to home :)
wow this is insanely amazing - she is so strong - thanks for filming this
Thanks for watching 😊
Nice to hear you are running this next year!
Yeah I look forward to it, but will probably regret that 15hours into the race 😅
holy moly guacamole
That was an epic story, an amazing athlete and an immutable challenge for all participants.

Crazy that I met Maaike this year while walking the TMB. Would have never expected to see her as the main protagonist of your video, LOL.
She’s incredible 🎉

Yeah she is!
Well done Maaike! 137km! That's impressive!
Funny to suddenly hear Dutch on your channel :) groetjes/hälsningar!

Congrats to Maaike and the rest of the runners, what a bunch of tough MFs! Also, 7:48 our TikTok queen, Mia Walsøe Lehn!
Nice video, do you think you will ever try this event?
Thanks! Watch the end of the video, then you will see I have to now 😅 actually looking forward to finally try it after being on the sideline documenting it.
What a baddass!
Inspiration
You should participate next year, would be a great video😅
…or live stream? 😛
Yeah I will 😁
Congrats Maaike! These things are super hard and running in a basement will not make it any easier.
Yeah she did great 🤩
i don't think i can even do 24 hours walking or even standing
this is just inspiring and amazing
Glad to hear!
Goed gedaan Maaike! Ik voelde gewoon een beetje jouw pijn terwijl ik ziek op de bank lig. 😂
Must be a bummer but she did more than most humans will ever attempt
Yeah she really did!
How long is one loop?
I don't get the attraction of this vs a trail loop. Maybe someone can explain it to me.
I also have a had a hard time understanding it but I think the attraction in a way is how unattractive it is the boring indoors environment makes it a pure mental fight for 24 hours you don’t get any help from an inspiring environment.
This is Sick😮😮, I mean 😅 in a good way, but it's still sick😂 24 hours running 🏃🏃
Haha yep I agree 😅
Did Frank Løke win?
No but he did great finished 11th and ran 209km
Does “marathon” translate to torture in one of the Latin languages? Running 24hrs on a basement track seems aweful
2:04 the only inconvenience is that you must carry a rifle, LOL and I complain about having to carry water
😅
My goodness.. the humidy and combined stink of body odor from those runners.
Probably because there was like a scary spider chasing her or something
because of the economy
Next year you will make it , sse you in 2025 .
Cult of sadists! why would you do that to yourself haha :P
Suffer for climate LOL!
