Seems like a pretty solid product. I'm glad that the company is having success and that these games are being preserved and re-introduced to new generations. I honestly wasn't sold on the handheld because i wasn't impressed by the screen size, screen aspect ratio, screen quality, and initial software selection, but it seems like this console and the current software selection might just have convinced me to pull the trigger.
do you work for them? this is literally the same thing as buying a rasppie and 40 memory cards. YOU ARE the whale they are looking for. it isnt even fpga
They hit the nail on the head with the collectable side. For me, when you buy a cartridge, you actually play it rather than downloading full roms set with 1000's of games and then never play them. Got the Founders Edition and can't wait for the Bitmap collection.
Yeah, I just don't see the appeal of the Amico. I know it's a niche system but WHO is the audience? Maybe the LeapFrog market? Will they try to get it placed on toy aisles at Wal-Mart?
Real games? Not really. Dumping roms from a cartridge to play them on emulators is not like the Real console hw experience. Just a waste of resources. Its funny that mjr makes a shitty Video about the amazing MiSTer but praises this crap.
@@ninetendopesaitama2107 That's a very niche platform you either have to build yourself or buy pre-built for $500+. Not even close to the same market or convenience. That's about the same as shouting "RASPBERRY PI" when the Nintendo Classic Edition consoles were released. MJR laid out the appeal of the Evercade in this video and the emulation isn't bad at all.
The cartridge idea is what drew me to the original handheld. I own every cartridge they have and on preorder. I ordered the founder’s edition VS console and am very excited to receive it. I will continue buying their cartridges to keep my collection complete. Evercade hit a home run IMO.

I am a big Evercade fan, even though at first I was sceptical too. It's the combination of indie/homebrew and rarer retro titles that make it appealing. The collector in me does love seeing all those carts. I pre-ordered a Founders VS System (in black) to match my black limited edition handheld. One thing you didn't mention in the video - the Evercade handheld can be used as a controller too, using a link cable (there is one in the Founders box, and also available separately). And according to Evercade's social media accounts, putting in certain combinations of two cartridges will unlock something extra - much like the old Konami carts for the MSX where you could unlock stuff, or the Sonic & Knuckles lock-on tech. Can't wait to try that out...
If you have the handheld and have the carts, this is an obvious buy. Starting with it home only is great for people getting started in this stuff. In my case I have over 400 retro games, and had pre-ordered a Polymega...yeah, it's a heck of a lot more expensive, but with the fact that I am getting it already, this isn't a console I see a need for myself for. If that didn't exist - I would be all over this.

It is great to hear that they are successful. There are not many ways of legally playing these old games and if they seem to understand what the community likes. Good for them. Hope, they will grow.
anyone really has to ask the question why buy this over an emulator, will never understand why we would want it. It's simple. Retro enthusiast's. Physical cartridges. Having a manual and looking through all the pages, and smelling the book for the first time. Popping in a game, and displaying the cases on a shelf. Physically preserving history. It gives us old people an overdose of dopamine, and makes us feel like we are five years old again for a few hours.

Yes agreed. Would be awesome if that was built on the console, but you can a HDMI to s-video converter. I use that with my TurboGrafx 16 mini on my Sony CRT and it looks and plays great as if it was an original TG16 console
I'm very happy with my Evercade handheld and am eager to get the VS. Blaze has done everything right and they seem to truly be proud of what they have created. You can also tell they are retro game lovers themselves.

Sure I guess if you put in a lot of time and effort you could achieve much the same with a Retro-pie, but I like the convenience of this. It really is put together in a slick, smoothly-operating manner.
I came a little late to the game with the handheld but now have all the carts and have ordered the VS Founder Edition. I think MJR's review highlights what really impresses me about this project - the little things. While it looks like you are just paying to play licensed copies of games you can emulate anywhere, you get so many smart out-of-the-box features like scanlines, aspect ratio selection, bezels, quick access to save states, carry saves between devices, ability to use different controllers, re-mapping controllers. Very well-thought out product and at $100 it's almost an impulse buy...for collector-types anyway.

This is intriguing as I like the older games. I think they're tapping into an interest with us retro collectors having physical cartridges and printed manuals which are really cool. I like that games from multiple platforms are being brought to it and there is the ability to display it on our HD displays with cool retro-style scan line options. The console and hardware is not the most aesthetically pleasing but it's decent enough and if this console catches on with more titles and popularity I'd consider getting one.

I gifted myself for Christmas the console pack with the Data East and Technos cartridges for $130. And I'm very satisfied. Much so that I just ordered the Irem cartridge through Best Buy. The cartridges at $19.99 to $29.99 aren't expensive and are very compact plus they benefit from the double slot on the console. Originally I wanted to buy one of those emulator consoles with 1k+ games but I became very wary due to complaints about things like delivery and some of the emulation software not working properly. This is a fine middle ground between free emulation software on PCs and retro consoles such as the TurboGrafx 16 mini that come packed with games but unless they are able to be upgraded that's all you're getting. Edit: as of this writing Blaze is going to release an indie game cartridge this month plus about 10 more cartridges but I have no idea what games are they going to have. I'm looking forward to them.
I received a handheld for my birthday a year ago. Honestly, as a collector, it is kind of awesome. I may have to pickup the console when I get the chance. My main hope is that we might get to see some old PAL exclusives.
I adore my evercade handheld and have all the carts released so far. I have the Founders preordered and cannot wait to get hold of it. And all those new carts. The numbering of the carts scratches my ocd itch, so I must not miss a single one 🤣 they totally knew what they were doing with that. 🤣
This is fantastic. The dual slots remind me of the Sufami Turbo, which has me thinking about some of the stuff that thing could do. Since the Evercade CAN be updated, maybe they could add some bonuses that you get with certain cartridge combinations. I don’t mean extra games or anything (that could get unethical quickly, forcing people to buy cartridges they don’t want to unlock games that are on cartridges that they already own), just fun little gimmicks. For example, let’s say Konami let them put some of their beat ‘em ups on this thing. I know, I know, there are licensing issues with many of those games and Konami’s current management is allergic to fun, but let’s say Evercade somehow pulled it off (at the end of the day, this is really just an example of what they could do with other companies’ games). Maybe they could put “The Simpsons” and “X-Men” on one cartridge (it’d be easier to license, since both of those properties are owned by Disney now, they might have partial rights for “Bucky O’Hare” as well) along with “Violent Storm”, and the two TMNT games and “Metamorphic Force” on another. There’d be other Konami games on each cartridge, of course, but we’re just talking about this genre for the purposes of the conversation. Anyway, what if if you plugged both cartridges into the system… and it gave you the option to play some of these games as characters from other games on the cartridges? At the very least, “cross-breeding” games that ran on the same engine should be easy, like “X-Men” and “Metamorphic Force”. You could play each game as the characters from the other. You could also do goofy stuff like an overlay of “X-Men” with new sprites of the Simpsons wearing their costumes (again, Disney owns both, I can’t imagine there’d be an issue).
I hope you consider reviewing the 6 newest cartridges seeing as most of us will now have to wait until mid to late December or possibly even January for our copies - either separately or all in one video.
Just learned about this console now and I'm seriously considering getting one. Going back to that era when we actually owned our games is great! Not to mention they have some great releases like Tomb Raider and Duke Nukem. One day, Steam might decide all the games I "bought" are no longer available to me, and on that day I will have nothing else to play.
That would be great but I would think the licence would be a problem. Either expired or to expensive. Would love turtles tournament fighters and turtles in time
I had ordered the Founders Edition and I'm very excited to do my own unboxing! Although I do hope they get the Namco cartridges sorted out. I get that they don't wanna pay extra to license those cartridges on the VS. But since it was included in the UK handheld package, and especially since it doesn't display an error message when inserted. I think the confusion about it may well be pretty bad. With that said, they've got alot of great cartridges out (twenty plus) and more on the way to play!
We thought this was a great point from MJR and we are implementing this right now for day 1 patch :) also fwiw we are still in process of trying to sort it out. Look forward to seeing your video!
I got the handheld, all the catridges + the console on pre-order. Heavily excited for this! There have been some problems in the beginning, but nothing they didn't fix fast with a firmware update + they even ship new cartridges in case something goes wrong on your end. I wish it would feel a bit sturdier though, the plastic screen on the handheld is my main concern + the d-pad feels a bit floaty. Other than that, as a customer I had a great experience with the support & the handheld. I don't switch games as fast as I would with access to thousands of roms where I would just try everything out or couldn't even decide what to play lol.
Thanks for the review, I now have the VS pre-ordered. I already have the handheld version, and love the Data East and Jaleco collections, but the one I am really looking forward to is the Renovation/Telnet collection.
Was kinda against this then i picked it up on an amazon sale and i was wrong. I love the handheld but the system is just so cool. Unlockable games, secret gamea when pairing certain carts, game of the month, multiplayer, just so much fun.
I wonder why nintendo didn't make a console-style switch, as they made an "only portable" version of it, it could make sense that they would make an "only tv" version that would benifit from not having to worry about the battery over charging
Nice to see that this ended up as such a nice little system. While I could easily emulate most of these on one of my current machines, this seems to be such a nice, compact and easy to use 'under the TV' style solution that it seems like a very tempting proposition. Sure, it's no PS5 - but then it costs less than half the price of a PS5 (or less than 1/4 when allowing for scalping).
You don't happen to have the new Atari VCS Classic Controller do you, Metal Jesus? If so, any chance it works on the Evercade VS? Watching you play Warlords and seeing Pong in their list makes me think compatibility with the Atari VCS Classic would be a huge win. (and don't think I'm not eyeing Night Driver on that Evercade cartridge with enthusiasm)
Supposedly they are in talks with other arcade publishers that made 4 player games (Konami comes to mind) to bring their titles to the EC. Would be cool to play x-men, tmnt, simpsons in 4 player mode. As for scanlines, I dont know why every device that simulates scanlines has to make the image darker. If it can insert the scanlines while maintaining the same brightness... that would be sweet. I hate having to up the brightness of my set to play using them. I love my evercade and cant wait to get the founder edition. It would be cool to get a colecovision cart
Looks interesting. Was considering getting one of these for the living room for something my nieces could play when they come over. Seems like a good thing to have in a living room outside of the main game room for recreational fun or if you have family or non-gamers over.
This is shaping up to be real interesting! So far, it's blowing the Intellivision Amico out of the water. I didn't expect much at much first, but seeing the company bring back so many obscure classics is great! If only it was available for immediate order, lol. From what I've seen, the Evercade VS won't publicly release in the states until late January. A shame, but hopefully they'll have enough units to go around by then!
The secret code menu made me raise my eyebrow for sure. They could let you do so some fun things like a boss rush or bonus challenges. It has some potential there
We have been told hidden games etc. We also get bonus games but putting certain carts in together. And supposedly they will be adding more secrets with console patch updates in the future.
As someone who was feeling left out by the handheld due to a disability. I am very interested in this. Since I think I will be able to manage that controller with my one hand.
I habe the Evercade with the first 20 cartridges. Also have the Vs premium pack paid for and pre ordered. Alot of people dont understand this device but i think its awesome. Buzzing fornthe VS to get released.
Thanks for the info, good review. I been curious as to what Evercade was exactly and what it could do, learned that here and now have a good feel as to if I want to get one now
Shame Evercade VS ignored the UK's Right to Repair Consumer Rights law as of Jan 2021. I don't mean the console but the controllers, no screw holes on the back of the controller... I was thinking it would be cool to buy a White Controller and put the clear X & Y buttons in one of my 4 Black Founder Controllers, but more importantly being able to clean them properly would of been nice.
I love the Evercade because of their lesser known, rarer titles that they include in the collections. Piko Interactive Vol. 1 is my all time favorite. 20 games for $20 and a lot of them (such as Dragon View on the SNES) would cost a fortune trying to attain them singly. I want the guys at Blaze to add in random game select for the two cartridges. Imagine you and a friend each insert a cart and you don't know what to play first. You can select a game randomizer and run local tournaments seeing how skilled each player really is. I think that would make for an awesome firmware update. Loving what I am seeing so far. Thanks for the review!
Seems like a great product. I’ve tried retro pie on an old laptop, and that was great. It it behaves as good as that did then this is a great buy, and fully legit.
Yes! I have the Handheld and 16Carts so far, can’t wait to get my hands on the VS! Gonna buy all the cartridges, the packs look awesome lined up on the shelf. You just can’t get that with illegal ROMs and console store DLC!
Well done. I'm about ready to purchase the premium. (glad you noted that the two NAMCO collections did NOT work on the premium. Sadly, those were the one's I wanted first...o, well)

in the Secrets menu type “SEIJIWASHERE” “CIRCUIT” Plus having cart combinations does stuff too Atari Collection 1 + Atari Collection 2 = Dark Chambers Atari Lynx Collection 1 + Atari Lynx Collection 2 = Raid on Tricity: Second Wave Piko Interactive Collection 1 + Piko Interactive Collection 2 = Pyramids of Ra Gaelco Arcade 1 + Indie Heroes Collection 1 = Arkade Rush and on the main screen L2+R2+Select = Gotris L1+R1+Up = NNNNNN L1+R1+Down = Spacey McRacey
You could also do goofy stuff like an overlay of “X-Men” with new sprites of the Simpsons wearing their costumes (again, Disney owns both, I can’t imagine there’d be an issue).
amazon says jan 2022
might consider preordering
big data east fan & for $100 my nephews might love it
I hope you consider reviewing the 6 newest cartridges seeing as most of us will now have to wait until mid to late December or possibly even January for our copies - either separately or all in one video.
I feel the should release the TMNT arcade versions, with 4 USB ports, playing them on evercade vs could be quite the experience.
That would be great but I would think the licence would be a problem. Either expired or to expensive. Would love turtles tournament fighters and turtles in time
@@mikewhoelse Well arcade one up done it, why evercade could not?
@@Shimazaki00 that's true. I had forgotten about that. Well let's hope they do!
Great video MJR!!
I want one pretty bad. I love what they are doing and playing officially licensed carts is awesome. I want the EXP handheld too
I just bought the handheld and a bunch of the game packs, after watching your reviews! Looking forward to receiving them! :D
I wonder why nintendo didn't make a console-style switch, as they made an "only portable" version of it, it could make sense that they would make an "only tv" version that would benifit from not having to worry about the battery over charging
Wait, I forgot this was coming out!
If they bring in the TMNT arcade games, that is a Day One Buy for me.
I'm really excited for this as I love physical cartridges! Love your videos as usual! Thanks for the heads up on this console!
It has some potential there
I sense there will be a code someday to play those Namco carts... 🤫
Thanks for pausing at title screen before going into the game! I saw that Xenon 2 Megablast would be my type of game.
Maybe the secret code screen is how you will connect with players online. Sort of like how the Wii and Switch had friend codes.
We have been told hidden games etc. We also get bonus games but putting certain carts in together. And supposedly they will be adding more secrets with console patch updates in the future.
I'd jump on this if online multiplayer was added in a firmware update. While it's 100 bucks in the US it's a bit more expensive in the UK.
I just wish those select screens would be more retro (chunky pixel fonts etc.) to keep the illusion it's the original thing.
And thank you for being one of the few positive youtube gaming channels.
I love both my Evercade and my Evercade vs. ❤
Thanks for the info, good review. I been curious as to what Evercade was exactly and what it could do, learned that here and now have a good feel as to if I want to get one now
Good friends with Blaze Entertainment and been loving this system!
Menu looks easy and clear. Nice moments to see Frog, Snafu and Burger Time :-)
Shame Evercade VS ignored the UK's Right to Repair Consumer Rights law as of Jan 2021.
It would be cool to see a dreamcast or GameCube mini at this point. Maybe they arent old enough yet but id be interested
I really like the Evercade. I'm going to get this console version. I've been collecting every release. Another great video dude!😁👍
Thank you ! An Evercade video with scanlines examples ! I can buy now the system Evercade, really great with Pixel Perfect and subtle scanlines ;)
Some enterprising individual will be able to get around that Namco lockout.
Sadly, those were the one's I wanted first...o, well)
Sounds like a good gift idea for someone starting out would be awesome. This looks solid. 👌
Definitely!
I really like the Evercade project, but the labels are all over the place 2:58 some left some right most of them not centered.
I really hate that so much...
Cannot be that hard to make a unified box, can it?
I love the handheld and definitely getting this console too! It's just awesome!
This looks to be an awesome console for Evercade games. I already have the handheld Evercade with all physical games they released since the start of the release.!
I like this console , well thought of! They did a great job!
This looks great, can't wait to get one and play the new arcade carts. Thanks for the review, very helpful 👍
What's the difference between the arcade versions and the... other versions?
@@Inconvenient_NPC The arcade carts are actual original arcade versions of games and the standard ones are usually various home console ports
@@retroimportgamer513 - That's interesting, so is there a difference as far as content is concerned?
@@Inconvenient_NPC There are different games on all the carts yes
@@retroimportgamer513 - Got it, thanks very much mate! I have mine pre-ordered
Yay nice to see some love for Xenon 2, my alltime favourite Shmup!
I hope we get to the point we’re we get a fpga ps2 console that can play games in 1080p
I love the evercade idea, I'm just worried about the carts lifespan, they look so cheap. Hope I'm wrong.
