my lifelong fascination with how people across the globe live, the similarities and differences, as well as a resulting master’s degree in cultural anthropology, allow me to view norms, mores, traditions, societal structures, etc. objectively. i appreciate rick’s efforts to emphasize a need for travel to broaden one’s horizons and perspectives. i cannot think of a single other act that has this capacity.
Rick is in a class by himself. At a time where when we have forgotten why any experience is meaningful or why anyone else matters, Rick reminds us of our inherent goodness and practicality of being human by embracing others. Travel is indeed a tonic for the masses. Differences are natural and should be celebrated. I was reminded of this on a recent trip to Poland. Rick's info helped then to appreciate the richness of the country and now by reflecting again on my experience. The world needs more Rick Steves - now!
Rick does an incredible job. If history have taught us anything, we should take care and defend our democracy. The main core of democracy should be the prevention of democracy being used as a mean to cancel democracy itself. Democracy must have some thresholds for its participants, just like the amendment that says that only a person of U.S. born of a fixed certain age can be elected as president, we should have some more guarding rules. Only a person who is willing to fully accept the rules of democracy can be an elected president, like accepting the election results without any conditions as well as having a clean criminal personal background.
Yay 🎉 Thank you Rick! Always informative, interesting, thought provoking and not afraid to take a stand for what you believe in. I appreciate and enjoy your perspective 💖🌏🌟👏🏼
My favorite vacation was to Türkiye in 2018. We had to wait for our visas because Erdogan had banned Americans for several months over Fethullah Gulen, a political rival who he wanted the US to extradite to surely be executed. So many people told me to go somewhere "safer", that we wouldn't be welcome. The people in Istanbul were the most welcoming, interested & interesting people I've ever met. We were visiting a mosque, and a woman asked (in impeccable English - everyone there is multi-lingual) where we were from. I had a backup story, but I was honest, I'm from the United States, Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love. She was delighted, was a Yankees fan, and said how happy she was that Americans were visiting, that people are people (I think Kermit the Frog also said that :), and we can all get along no matter what our political leaders do or say. I learned my salutations, As-salaam alaikum, and felt blessings upon us as fellow citizens of the world. Thanks Steve for all you do!
I am so moved by this travel talk in every way - what are superb, we'll rounded, honest workshop on how to open our lenses in every way. Thank you Rick ❤
This video begins with the wonderful presentation as a moderator by Mr.Gabe Gunnink ! I also appreciate Mr.Rick Steves when he defines what travelling is : as a Tourist, as a Traveler, and as a Pilgrim ! Thus it can be classified as a young traveller( Tourist ) as a middle aged traveller ( Traveler ) and a person who travels in old age on religious purpose ( Pilgrim ) ! I think people should inculcate the habit of travelling in order to stay happy and to learn many new things during their journey and get acquainted to many nice people and strengthen their belief that this world is not devoid of good people yet ! Thanks !😊
Also Andrea who took us on our Sicily RS trip was the most fantastic tour guide I've ever seen a young man of 20 something and so well versed in linguistics just rocked it for all of us old folks!
Thank you for such a powerful & educational show-Travel As A Political Act-2024 Elections Edition. Your perspective has opened my mind & I’m sharing this show with others. We all really need this right now!
Regarding the push in the US fousing on STEM…there is also a movement to incorporate the arts. I’ve seen many STEAM programs being sponsored by schools and non-profits (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics). So, an encouraging note there.
Got to see Rick last year at PLU. Glad to see this talk for the wider audience. Great message. This quote just came across my feed "Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow mindedness and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts...." Mark Twain
Yet more of why I love Rick Steves so much! Would love to run into him some day, maybe in some random cafe or bar in Istanbul or Krakow or wherever. ❤️ 🇺🇸 🌏
Rick I could not agree with you more regarding our political landscape! Everything is on this election in terms of the future of our country thank you for your beautiful insights!
As someone living outside the US for many years, I need to say that "south of the border" is a colloquialism that doesn't easily translate (even in English) to those outside the US. I don't have a better term right now but challenge the eloquent Rick Steves to come up with a better way of describing those who live in places with less opportunity and fortune than those in our country. I've heard "3rd world" and that still is lacking for several reasons. I look forward to hearing a better option from someone more articulate and skilled than I am.
I have all my life been a part-time Historian, Arts and Antiquities conservator. What Rick is presenting here is why we should all be a part-time historian so that we do not fall back into death grip of the dark side
Amen, amen, amen! Rick Steves, you are a national - or rather, international- treasure. Looking forward to seeing you in Thousand Oaks at the end of October.
32:15 Memorial to the murdered members of the Reichstag (the Liz Cheneys, Adam Kinzingers, Mitt Romneys of 1930s Germany). Political opponents were the first to go. Don’t let it happen here!!!

Rick Steves is so great, no one should politicize anything about him or travel. I’m vehemently anti Biden/Harris but adore Rick and his travel talks, philosophy and PBS tours and most of those like me are so much more open than the deranged activist that cancel everything in sight. They’d be the most antithetical to European and other travel and openness as their all about accepting and celebrating traditions and uniqueness
Thank you for your understanding of Humanity and willingness to teach. Even if the subject matter and presentation is not escapist and Pollyanna. Seeing all sides, requires a conscious effort. 1:33:00 We do have armed guards in front of every Dollar General, Bank, Pharmacy, Walmart, School here in POOR america. I think the rich life has you bamboozled Mr. Steves into thinking the way you do. But come down to Tucson Arizona, Erie Pennsylvania two complete opposite sides of the country, both very poor, and see how life is. AND dont go to the good side of town, and say you went. Come talk to my father, just celebrated his 68th bday yesterday, worked his whole life as an honest public servant laborer for our schools. I think with you new health opportunity and war in Europe, you might at the end of your life come back to your American roots, and travel USA, talk to the salt of the earth humans who live here. I KNOW you wouldnt vote KARMELA if you did that! I know it with all my heart. God Bless

Wow, this was a "high consciousness" lecture!
You'd be surprised that many Americans have never even been out of their COUNTY
