Rick, I admire your vision and how you scaled your business to fit your values. You have inspired thousands, if not millions, of intelligent entrepreneurs, and enriched even _more_ readers and viewers' lives. A business _can_ make a positive difference in the world!
As an Australian who has lived in Portugal for decades, I must endorse your views on visiting other towns outside Lisboa and Porto. The cooking caseiro in rural areas has been awarded Michelin stars and the chance to show off regional cuisine. That triangle bar is a regular watering hole❤.
Hi Rick! I think that statistically more people ARE travelling. With the internet and ease of planning and research, destinations that were once only visited by the curious who thrived off of national geographic, lonely planet guide books and word of mouth, have now become accessible to the masses, who not only want but need to travel the path most trodden. As a humble backpacker in The late 90s I’m so glad I was able to see the world through the back door at that time. Now, my partner and I always use your guide books to plan our European adventure…but we go during the shoulder or off season. Just visited Greece in April on an independent road trip following your itinerary and had a wonderful time! No crowds. Great weather. Met a group of one of your guided tours and had dinner with them…lovely folks…and had a high quality budget adventure.
Great! This is perfect 👍🏻 I’ve just bought tickets to Portugal 🇵🇹 I’ve really enjoyed Monday Night Travels 👏🏼Thank you! I’ve seen all of Rick’s shows- over and over!! It’s nice to see some of the other people in the Rick Steves company family: Gabe! Lisa! Cameron! Thanks for the fun 🤩 inspiration and Keep on Traveling 🧳🛫🇳🇴🇬🇧🇵🇹🇮🇪❤️🍕🍷🥘🏛🌆⛲️🏰🗺🤸♂️🌎💃
OMG Rick you have hair on your face!!! 😊 Looking very forward to going on our Rick Steve’s Switzerland tour starting this coming August 18th!! Our first and hopefully not our last!!! Been wanting to do one of your tours for more than 10 years!!!
Rick, Really enjoyed this talk. My husband and I will be on your Spain My Way and a week in Portugal this October. Been a fan since the early 90's. Thank you!
Your Berlin, Dresden, and Wittenberg parts of the guide were AMAZING! We saw almost no American tourists on our December trip, and we felt like we found all the "back doors" thanks to the guides. So excited they are being updated, though hard to imagine they could get better :)
Thank you, Rick. I loved this Monday Night Travel of Portugal and Germany. You have been my inspiration for travel for so many years. I started following you on PBS and finally after retirement I was able to travel to Europe in 2014. We were in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and there you were working on a tour book! What a thrill!!! We have continued to travel and try to follow your example. You mentioned the Turkish section of a German town. When we were in Nuremburg, we visited with a native and she told us about the time after WWII in Germany. They needed men (they lost so many of their men during the war), so they invited Turkish men to come to the country to help rebuild the country. Now the Turkish have a place in German life. The lady we visited with was married to a Turkish man.
Thank you for the excellent travel report, and for the sobering (but i think, much needed) piece on history and our place in the world today. I think you excel in bringing a very educational perspective, and I'm so glad to have found this channel and to be able to learn about the fascinating history and cultures of the world through your books, videos, and travels.
I know from other social media that Rick did a lot of travels through Southern Italy recently (spring 24?). I would love for Rick to do a similar show, or perhaps have a guest from Napoli, to give some updates and thoughts on this region.
One advantage of high speed rail reservations, if you know where and when you're travelling far enough in advance, is sometimes there are significant discounts available.
Just returned from Portugal. Lines for going on Tram 28 were ridiculous. That too in 90 degree heat. That tram ride is interesting but not worth waiting an hour in the heat. We were able to beat crowds by going earlier in morning. Although honestly I was disappointed as it seemed to have been hyped more than necessary and I expected some dazzling views. I hated being a tourist will stick to watching Rick Steve showing us the world from the comfort of my house.
We avoided most lines by just going early. The bookstore is a perfect example... We booked the 9am timeslot, and were in without waiting more than 20 minutes... Beautiful place and the wife put her $8 entry fee towards a book she was wanting to read.
This is the best Rick Steve conversation, I have experienced! You tought us all today with the real world History from the past and present! You should run for President of the USA❤
Don’t understand the comment about paper train reservations in Portugal. As far back as 2021, I made my reservations and payments via the Comboios de Portugal app and only had to show the reservation and passport to the conductor. I’ll grant you, it wasn’t easy to navigate if you didn’t speak Portuguese, and the payments page had minuscule text that made it hard to manage, but it worked just fine.
Nice destinations but I hope that Rick Steves once in future also covers Lithuania, Riga and Slovakia as European hidden gems and also Russia (very rich with history and art and it is in Europe, can be done like Iran) when it is more accessible again. I recommend destinations Trakai Castle, Hill of Crosses, Curonian Spit with Nida Dunes, Vilnius, Riga, High Tatras (Lomnicky Štit and Štrbske Pleso), Čičmany, Bojnice Castle, Košice, Trenčin, Bratislava, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kizhi Pogost and maybe Golden Ring of Russia.
Thank you for speaking out against facsim and ignorance here in our country and throughout the world. I only wish the MAGA people could hear you but I doubt they are on your channel. This was a multi layered vlog. I hope to make it to Portugal. I may have to leave my home and be an immigrant in Europe. I did love Berlin when I visited.
Something pretty important - Hitler actually did not win fair and square, it is widely recognized that the elections were not fair due to involvement of various right-wing armed militia groups. 1:40:00 ish
Rick you should talk about the drastic demographic change that’s going on in Europe. Every person you showed in Portugal was Brazilian. I don’t think people realize how many Brazilian and Indian immigrants there are in Portugal now. The numbers are crazy . Over 1 million (legal) Brazilians and hundreds of thousands of Indians mostly illegal . It’s strange to visit the country of my ancestors and not see many direct descendants of my ancestors. And this is happening all over Europe but Portugal is a country of roughly 11 million people and the changes are very visible .
Now that other towns in Portugal have been mentioned alas they will be run over by hordes of tourists too. Current day tourism has made all the nice places in the world into Disney land. It just feels wrong and their needs to be some regulation of this sort of tourism. In todays world we don’t need to travel to a place to find out about the local history. If one is running from one museum to another over the span of few days there is only so much you are going to remember even a few days later.
Your coffee brandy story reminds me of Italy. I loved grappa and the local guys had a cafe correcto in the morning. It was like jet fuel. But they loved that I had one with them
When you talk about Germany, in a way, i was thinking you are talking about the corporations controlling the media and trying to push the agenda or promote their propaganda. So sad how both parties have rules to keep certain people out. When it comes to federal elections, any parties should have to follow the rules set by the people since this is a federal issue and not a parties issues.
Blackrock, vanguard, statestreet is the ones driving many of your issues. The are overly a big percentage in all that is owned across the USA and others. Monopolize over the percentage.
I applaud Rick's brave call for the USA to do something about carbon emissions. Since there are over 11 million Americans visiting Europe each year (requiring around 100,000 round trip trans-Atlantic flights) perhaps he will call for a stop to such mass tourism, and also stop promoting such travel with his books, tv shows and guided tours.
I usually enjoy the content of your videos. However, you lost me at the 51 minute mark by going into a political sphere. It is ironic that you advocate travel, which, to reach these destinations requires flights, which sir, do not run on fairy dust, and have provided you a very good living for years. Your strength is in your travel wisdom, sorry you have chose to take this elsewhere.
I don't understand your point. He has made money through travel and now he should not talk about politics when it is directly related to his travels (museums about history)?
Climate change, i notice you didn't talk about China, India, or many other countries. The climate always changes throughout time. Yes, i want clean water and air, but im not trying to throw it down people faces. Educate if you like, but don't push Climate change when you only want to talk about the USA.

Information here is incorrect. The Maritime Circle Line harbour tour in Hamburg is in English and German.
Hi Rick, we are in Hamburg right now. It is a very beautiful city but it is a pity they don't seem to care at all for international tourism.
