You have hands that’s scientifically, historically, practically and theoretically the greatest weapon ever invented and then as a side arm we also have thumbs
I'm sorry, only a theory. Do you have any conception of how much verification a hypothesis has to go through to even come close to be considered a theory? Gravity is just a theory as well. A theory has so much evidence backing it up that it is practically a fact. Look up a man named Charles Darwin and maybe your opinion will change.

+be awesome Hair follicles straight = straight hair, on an angle = curly. Follicle shapes come into play a little too, and of course, these are largely genetically determined. As the genes are incomplete dominance they tend to develop in the middle of the parents genes (curly + Straight = Wavy). Of course if both parents have the same hair type, their children should do too, but I believe skipping generations (like red hair) can happen as well. Also, when you factor in different appearances being attractive (Beards are attractive if hardly anyone has one, and vice versa). It's quite easy to see how they are both kept fairly even, accounting for cultural standards, in genetically diverse demographics. Lastly, certain demographics will have much higher rates of genes for either curly or straight hair, so in some instances, a lot of people can just have straight or curly hair. I hope that helps :)
Yeah that kinda makes sense... well let me tell ya this, it makes more sense now than before, so there is atleast some improvement in my brain:D Thank's a lot
Isabell L.K curry hair traits usually stem from hot places Middle East, Africa, Mediterranean so I’d assume curly hair has to do with heat exposure over time dry hair tends to curl more then wet or damp
I herd from Loyd Pyre if i remember correctly that Primates finger nail's genetically dont grow past the finger tips and that only humans fingernails do. I find this to be a really interesting point, when considering humans out in the wild living indigiously, such a trait seems to be an annoying and dangerous hazard
+Uprising Winter genetics, plus i guess lots of hair fall of due to them roling on ground, fighting etc.so they constantly grow new hair. Also, only our head hair and beard grow limitlessly, not our body hair. That might be genetics also.
No, human hair does actually has a growth limit, it just varies from one individual to another as per their genetics. When I was younger, I wanted hair like Rapunzel, so I went countless years without getting it cut, but my hair reached about 3 ft in the first 2 years and just has never ever gotten longer than that not matter what. Meanwhile, you see pictures and videos of people who can grow their hair out to 10 ft long.
I believe that the nails help climb trees or pick up things, they're like support. If you're hanging on a building, all you need is the tip of your fingers to hold on the edge and those nails help do that, without the nails you'll just fall cuz your fingers are soft and flabby. Also it seems like the nails act like a grappling hook....just with out the hook. When your hanging, your fingers push down, the nails push down on to the edge keeping you from falling as if a grappling hook caught on a branch and you're plugging on it. Best I can explain
Yes I did notice that toenails grow slower than fingernails. It was especially noticeable because when I was a kid I got my toenail cracked near the end of my toe by a heavy canister. And then took about a year for the nail to look normal ish.
Dexterity.... It works directly with the evolution of primates. As use of the digits became more useful regarding small, fine manipulation of items such as sticks to forage for termites or to groom the fellow pack members, the flat, dull finger nails were more apt then the claws. Plus they'd be far more beneficial when it comes to grabbing small branches than clawing at tree trunks. Just a thought
could a factor also be the way primates walk when on all fours, while watching some primate species walk you see that they curl their hands and toes whilst using their knuckles to lift the bottom half of their body while also rolling their feet to land. this could have caused them to grow smaller and flatter as it would be an inconvenience to have long and sharp claws when walking.
euan todd Very good theory. They could have evolved to avoid injuring themselves and eventually when man descended from a common ancestor with apes we were left over with no claws as well, only evolving further.
When working with tools (knapping, for example), claws may cause problems not only in terms of dexterity, but also because broken claws could be more susceptible to infection than a broken nail.
My pinky toenail is kind of clawlike, and I have no idea what it's called. I kind of have to use dog nail clippers to cut it (or I just file it for eternity)
Yeah, one thing people don't seem to understand about evolution; it's not about progressively improving the species in general, it's about a species being more fit for their particular environment at the time. And of course, things are always changing, including environments, so it's entirely possible that, given enough time and changes in their environment, a species could evolve nails, lose the nails, and evolve them again. And, as she said, nails aren't necessarily better than claws; they're just better at doing certain things than claws, and vice versa.
Eye opener: if the flesh beneath the entire nail (nail bed) produced keratin, we would have upright claws like mice. Nails, claws and hooves are born from the same kind of keratin-producing organs, only they are in different shapes and configurations across species.
+50ftFrankenstein Differently, yes, but also incorrect. Would you say "tell" instead of "tail"? What about hail? Would you say "hell"? On- you probably would! How about... "mail"? Is it "mell" now? No? Then shut the fuck up with your "omg people say words differently" It's simply wrong, regardless of location.
Iunel Kirklin Lol the forward facing eye theory is actually wrong. It has been debunked. It's animals in forested areas that tend to develop forward facing eyes. Or, like lions, animals that have to wade through grass all day. They need to have bifocal vision to be able to see. It's not a carnivore only trait. It's the trait of any animal that lives in trees or bush/grass constantly. Gorillas are herbivores and they have forwards facing eyes.
Caleb Bell The longest living populations in the world eat a plant based diet. We can survive solely on plants and thrive, whereas if we eat only meat and no plants, we get vitamin deficiencies and get very ill. The #1 and #2 killers of people worldwide are heart disease and stroke. They are caused by the clogging of arteries in the brain and other parts of the body. The clogging of arteries is caused by the build up of plaque. And the build up of plaque is caused by cholesterol and saturated fats. Which animal products are full of. A vegan whole foods diet is the only diet that can reverse heart disease. Also, meat is a class 1 and 2 carcinogen. Casein (found in milk) is also a carcinogen. People who stop eating meat get more energy, they lose weight without even trying, and they're just overall a million times healthier. I think that's saying a lot. I read your link, and it's nothing new. I grew up in a meat eating household. I've heard (and used to believe) all those arguments. Now, thanks to doing some actual research and looking at countless studies, I know my past belief that humans are omnivores is wrong.
2m48s They can also work as a health indicators, yellow nails can be a sign of a fungal infection. But if we didn't have the nails, we would not have the yellow fungus either.
Fingernails permit us to have stronger grips when we grab things. Without them are fingertips would suffer damage if we squeezed our grip too hard. In some cases our fingertips would burst if we grabbed something with a strong grip.
There are no claws on the human hand although claws are a trademark of the carnivore/omnivore. When we drive down the highway and spot a dead animal on the side of the road, I'm quite sure people don't get excited, start to salivate, come to a screeching halt, jump out of their car, scare the crows away and start munching on the dead animal. Real carnivores/omnivores eat dead, rotting animals on the side of the road. We always cook meat before eating it, even though lions don't have gazelle barbeques in the jungles of Africa. To prove beyond a reasonable doubt that humans are herbivores, allow me to paraphrase author Harvey Diamond’s challenge: Place a two-year old child in a crib with a bunny rabbit and an apple. If the child eats the rabbit and plays with the apple, then I'll eat a steak sandwich that's been dipped in ice cream! Humans have no carnivorous/omnivorous instincts whatsoever when we're born, young and growing up. There isn't a speck of carnivorism nor an iota of omnivorism in us. People become inured to the taste of blood, flesh, veins, muscles, tendons, cow secretions [milk], hen-ass droppings [eggs] and bee vomit [honey] after they're forced down our throats during childhood.
+Jack1234567890 this comment is so stupid on so many levels......lol, many carnivores sometimes eat plants to help their health for whatever reason, but they would still go for the meat first.....also, babies would play with snakes too, does that mean snakes are not venomous????your logic is flawed
would be cool if our skin were like starfish like a bunch of little nails, would be a neat armor, and it could have a flufly outlayer just to 'feel good' to others. and gorilla arms. four of them. and a bunch of mantis shrimp eyes. all that without looking weird at all.
Yeah, probably for "scratching like" tasks, nails would help, because of the friction they allow (some kind of lever effect I guess). For instance if you want to remove some dirt from a table but it doesn't go away with a simple sweep, you can use your nails to scratch it.
As for fingernail growing faster i think its cuz we can use nails as claws while toenails serve almost no purpose so having faster regenerating nails would help us make our nails usable faster.
The short answer is that: We dont have claws because we are not (and our ancestors were NOT) natural predators. Mostly mammals that are predators have claws like lions, tigers, bears, cats, etc. Dogs have nails, too but are much more sharp and hard. A dog can scratch your face easily (or your car if it comes to welcome you home). Our ancestors could not hunt their prey naturally, that's why they were focred to create weapons.
well, we don't have claws because we don't hunt other animals the same way a predatory cat does, we usually out ran them till they collapsed of exhaustion so by the time we finally reached them they were almost dead themselves we didn't need to kill them with our claws or even hold them in place. but we need nails because it helps us open nuts and fruits.
I can think of many reasons why claws can be detrimental to an species like humans that has developed past the need to fight every day to survive. For one - claws would make it hard to make a fist and grip large tools properly - and tools are probably the #1 reason for or species success. I do struggle a little with coming up with good reasons for why we still have nails at all though. Why not just skin all around? Nails are typical areas for painful tears, damage, infections ect. And what would we lose by not having nails? The ability to open sodacans quite as easily? They seem very vestigial to me. Maybe there just hasn't been enough time for selective pressures to act upon them.
'The nails are good indicators for health problems, for example this nail fungus is visible because of the nails.' Well, if it's a nail fungus, it won't even need to be visible if we didn't have nails, because we would never get that NAIL fungus infection if we didn't have NAILS.
Every example she used for nails can work with claws so that didn't really help. Except the when she said for fashion and honestly sounds more on the women's side to me you don't see most straight male saying my nails look amazing, fabulous, and or cute you just don't. Honestly I would rather have claws that would be pretty awesome!
My toenails grow so slowly that I have no idea how often I cut them. Maybe once every 6 months, maybe once a year? Who knows, it is so long between time periods I really can't remember. My fingernails on the other hand, I cut them every week.
This was an interesting topic, but we'll probably never truly know where nails evolved from, or even where we evolved from. While we can still study the world around us and come to conclusions, we can never be 100% certain of what really happened unless we saw it. I think that in a way not knowing what really happened is a good thing because it brings up debates and creative ideas. (:
i thought we had nails to clean stuff from under our nails

I have to keep my nails trimmed for work, so I can't scratch your back, Lissette. 😧
well, we don't have claws because we don't hunt other animals the same way a predatory cat does, we usually out ran them till they collapsed of exhaustion so by the time we finally reached them they were almost dead themselves we didn't need to kill them with our claws or even hold them in place. but we need nails because it helps us open nuts and fruits.
'nells'
Lewis Walker after reading the comments, I laughed whenever she says it.
Fingernails allow us to apply higher pressure at the fingertips more comfortably than the metacarpal bones alone.
Basicly because the ability to grab and throw enemys around is much more usefull. You can defeat without hurting.
'The nails are good indicators for health problems, for example this nail fungus is visible because of the nails.' Well, if it's a nail fungus, it won't even need to be visible if we didn't have nails, because we would never get that NAIL fungus infection if we didn't have NAILS.
I'm at that click bait part of youtube again.
Every example she used for nails can work with claws so that didn't really help. Except the when she said for fashion and honestly sounds more on the women's side to me you don't see most straight male saying my nails look amazing, fabulous, and or cute you just don't. Honestly I would rather have claws that would be pretty awesome!
So from what I gather about this channel; they ask questions and then say they have no idea what the answers are.
How else am I supposed to scratch my balls and pick my nose? Duh... 😑
how did humans mutate dramatically enough to triple in brain size in under 50,000 years rather than several million?

My toenails grow so slowly that I have no idea how often I cut them. Maybe once every 6 months, maybe once a year? Who knows, it is so long between time periods I really can't remember. My fingernails on the other hand, I cut them every week.
Anyone else was looking for her hands to appear as she was talking and talking about nails?
not only primates do have nails. The asian small-clawed otter evolved to have hands similar to ours without being related.
I love your perspective
It's been proven that we have a common ancestor with apes and that we might have even comingled with Neanderthals. There is dna and fossil evidence.
"Nells" 😭😭😭💀😂

finger nails are claws. So we can pick our noses and remove stickers off packages. Damn those stickers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
