  • Freeview is old news... FREELY is the future for TV... Or Is It?
It was recently announced by the public service broadcasters of the UK, the BBC, ITV, CHANNEL 4 & CHANNEL 5, that a new 'evolution' of Freeview will be debuting in 2024. FREELY will take the free-to-air channels people love into the smart TV world of internet based streaming, but is it a good idea? How even will this take shape?

Big big problem: 1/3 of homes don’t get fast enough internet to us IPTV, and big proportion of poorer households cannot afford broadband. So people need to realise free to air and public service broadcasting will not go away until every inch of the uk has good fast broadband.

My concern with this is how BBC try to wrangle TV licencing into this service. If it becomes a desperate ploy to force more people to pay the tax, and put their foot down on streaming, then that is a very scary proposition. Thankfully we've got until 2027 before any changes are forced in this respect but, as someone who cares very little for terrestrial programming, hopefully it leads to TV licencing being abolished or atleast BBC's own powers being diminished, probably neither of these though given how effective it is as a tool to any political party in power.

      @anthonyperkins7556 ปีที่แล้ว

@@JaSon-wc4pnI think BBC should be encrypted on satellite and Freeview and put behind a paywall online.
On satellite and digital terrestrial TV, many if not all free to air smart TVs, are often equipped with a conditional access card decoder slot into which you insert a conditional access card decoder unit and smartcard for subscription services.
Upon payment of a monthly or yearly subscription, you receive a conditional access card decoder unit which slots into the conditional access slot on your TV, and you will ring a freephone authorisation number to activate your smartcard to access BBC services including iPlayer and Sounds on your set.
On TVs with no conditional access card decoder slot, again upon payment of a monthly or yearly subscription, you'll get a decoder box with integrated decryption circuitry, that plugs into your aerial and HDMI or AV socket on your TV, and once you are connected up, you ring the freephone automated authorisation number to activate your BBC decoder.
Online, you'll pay a monthly or yearly subscription and this will give you access to BBC services including iPlayer and Sounds.
If you view and listen to BBC services via Virgin Media cable TV, these will be tied into a basic tier subscription package.
Voilà no licence fee, and everyone wins, and if you don't want to pay for BBC services, that's ok as you can view other free to air Freeview and satellite services regardless, again no licence fee required.

@@MsMarco6 Absolutely! I couldn't agree more. The days of a soap opera attracting 36 million viewers at 7.30pm has ended. We don't want one episode of a drama at 9.00pm each week, we want them dropped in full so we spend the weekend watching the whole thing.
Aeons ago, back when people were first discovering websites, dial up modems, AOL 50 hour free access CDs, I was a tech writer. I wrote a piece about how I was "waiting for the world to catch up", as I used to talk about PUSH vs PULL. I did explain what I meant with lots of examples, but it was essentially this: I was waiting for a PULL technology world. Back, say, in the 70s, when three channels ruled the UK, newspapers printed yesterday's news, if you were interested in finding out what cargo was on a ship that was robbed by pirates in 1832 you had to make a note and go visit the library and HOPE that an encyclopedia might give the answer. All PUSH. You watched BBC1 until that comedy you liked on ITV started at 9pm, maybe leaving it on that channel for the rest of the evening.
We as consumers, customers, curious human beings, wanted PULL. And it's been happening and developing since the mid/late 90s. We WANT this comedy NOW. We want Wikipedia to tell us the cargo of the ship! We want control, and "legacy TV" is trying to reconcile schedules (Live TV) with the new viewing habits of the third decade of the 21st century. In effect, it's a hybrid; a compromise. Keep the schedules, but remind viewers where they can "Catch Up" via a link, or find a similar series based on your viewing preferences .
I realise this is very long winded (used to be a writer, now disabled, limited mobility, pain etc) but I hope this shows the signs of uncertainty and even a little fear ( especially the BBC ha ha ha - licence fee anger) that they have to act, not *react*, to what's happening. But if the BBC is NOT live, in the near future perhaps, then they lose the licence cash and have to learn how adverts work.
PULL is now the normal for everyone. We pulled *this* very video to watch! Thank you for attending my TED Talk... 🤣

    1. The black market have been doing this - to a very high standard - for nearly a decade. Anyone who's visited a friend or family member with a property based in certain sunnier parts of Europe knows this.
    2. Again, why the flip was Kangaroo killed.
    3. The industry desperately needs an aggregator of PSB content.
    4. Take the points on speed in the sticks; but 720p/50 will beat 1080p/25. Just sayin'.
    5. It's also a long game. Nobody is talking about switching off DTT right now, but developments have to have an eye towards it.
    6. The big one - everyone, including non regional channels, can offer much more targeted and regional - even local - advertising. No longer must Ron's Motors in my hometown buy a spot on ITV's Waltham split. They can simply hit everyone with an LE10 postcode. Every individual viewer gets a custom ad break. Which is what happens right here on YT already!

I'm not sure if you've misunderstood, or just didn't mention it, but they will not be switching off traditional broadcasting when this is implemented. It is simply an alternative way for people to access a free-to-air service. They will most likely never "switch off" traditional broadcasting as it is the most effective way to reach people in emergencies. This is the reason traditional radio broadcasting still exists.
Also, the figure of 15% of people using Smart TVs means that 15% of households are accessing media via ONLY their Smart TV streaming services (i.e. they do not also have access to Freeview, cable, or satellite). And as for the TV licence tax.... 🤬

Does anyone still remember Challenge TV, the one stop shop for game show reruns? I’m only asking because it holds a special place in my heart. Because when I was younger than what I am now I used to watch Bullseye religiously whenever it dared to air on the channel. That and other game shows as Catch Phrase, Play Your Cards Right, Family Fortunes, The Price Is Right and a host of others.

The big problem with any smart tv is the smart functions rapidly become obsolete as technology improves and manufacturers stop support after a few years. So TV will gradually follow the mobile phone model where people will need new equipment every few years. I can't see Freely maintaining an old app just to allow early devices to continue working. We already seem to be getting used to replacing a TV every few years, something practically unheard of 20 years ago. I can see a future where working equipment is being thrown away simply because the manufacturers no longer support the hardware. Sure there may be alternative ways to connect such equipment to allow viewing, but most people want plug and play with no extra effort.

In the border counties of Ireland, (Cavan, Monaghan, Louth, Meath, Westmeath, Donegal) TVs with Saorview (Irish Freeview) can receive the Northern Irish BBC channels and the other British channels, along with RTE, and Virgin Media Television channels. Would Freely put an end to this?

If BBC is involved it won't be free.... You will still have to buy a license so won't be free.

And no doubt you'll need to sign in so the beeb know where you are and if you have a licence when watching channel 5, sorry, ITV.

I think this is great news - I know many friends who live in flats, and they don't want to pay for Sky etc, and have it hard trying to receive the Freeview channels. Streaming them is perfect. The old Freeview system is becoming a dinosaur. Broadband speeds for most are now very good. Even the basic 30MB speed would stream this service reasonably well. TV viewing has changed. I 90% of my TV viewing is online, with Freesat here as a sort of back up.
