I can see a freely app being launched after low take up .
"Freely "buy a new TV, TV licence and an Internet subscription? Doesn't sound free to me
Not too 'freely' available is it 😆
I think it's a way for the bbc to catch you out to get the licence fee revenue ! You use their bbc/iplayer !
That's the corporations for you as always. Working hard to create products that the public don't want. It's like paying subscriptions to car manufacturers to access features of modern EVs that in old fossil fuel cars would be paid for once at purchase as optional extras. I've almost got enough in the way of DVDs and Blu-rays at this point to just disconnect my TVs and never watch any broadcasts again, enough CDs to disconnect all those Internet Radios.
What you talking about, its called "Progress" Everything is going to be through broadband, I think its a great idea@@jitmancanth6698
I am a TV aerial & satellite dish installer and I have a large customer base spanning 13yrs.
Not a single customer has asked me about Freely as of this comment.
Yes, i will probably be installing less aerials & dishes moving forward, but I am sure that there will be a natural shift toward increased numbers of TV set ups, in-home WiFi coverage and data cabling to get this service up and running in people's homes.
TV aerials will still be required to keep TV's loaded with the most cannels possible.
With that in mind, will people ensure that the next TV that they buy has to have Freely? Most probably not. They will buy a set that is the best that they can afford.
Picture quality and the "badge" of a TV seems to be what people go for, and I can't see people moving away from brand loyalty.
A lot of homes have multiple TV's.
This is going to be a slow burner...
Not a chance I would fork out for replacement equipment even if they turned off the transmitters today. We need to be moving away from the disposable market. TV's used to last at least 4 - 5 years, and many a lot longer. Now the idea seems to be moving towards the mobile phone model where you are expected to buy the latest thing at least once a year. I will never purchase a TV based on "smart" functions, when they rapidly become obsolete within a few years.
Within 5years there will be no more satellite dishes or TV aerials. Best bet would be to start retraining now. Don't be "Blockbuster"
@@harwoods11 They will still have a place going forward. I have even had customers have a sky dish reinstalled as they can't use sky glass properly with their broadband connection.
When it comes to area broadband outages, people would be left with no TV whatsoever.
I had a job where a BT pole had been knocked down after a truck ploughed into it. Again a streaming only customer had nothing for a week until I installed an aerial for them.
Foreign satellite TV will not be affected whatsoever.
I think the fear of nothing will keep aerials and dishes running for way longer than 5 years.
Like I say, there will be a gradual shift in job type for me. It won't be going dark in 5 years like someone hitting a switch.
The reduction of TV aerials & dishes will go hand in hand with the increase of broadband resilience.
I do also have plenty of other services that will carry me to retirement, and others that I can introduce if need be.
The TV of a neighbour was getting poor signal and missing channels. The dropping of standard BBC channels for HD on satellite meant retuning but these came and went. It took some effort to get them to call out an aerial installer to check the dish and position. He suggested that instead of replacing the LNB to install a Freeview aerial. He used part of the satellite dish cable and chopped off the connectors and retuned to Freeview. So only 7 HD channels, not ITV2,3,4. I don't know why this was chosen and not simply fixing the existing dish. My neighbour did not understand the difference or distinction and was already stressed out by the changes the BBC made and not being able to find her regional programmes. I thought it pointless complaining or making more fuss if Freely removes all channels from Freeview and Freesat in a few months.
Most people do not know that Freesat is an option. They know Sky (pay for the service), Cable/Virgin and TV aerial (Freeview).. Even with the press and notices they will have no idea about Freely. If Freely is only available on 2024 released TVs with smart interface and the Freely app or yet another desktop box they are not going to know about it until they are told there are no channels on Freeview when it is shut down.
@@michaelmcdonald2348 In 2024 we are seeing BBC closing standard TV regional programmes needing to retune to get them on the HD version but you need a TV that can receive the HD signals. My 1080p 49" screen does not and has no smart feature interface with apps. I have been using a computer to get iPlayer and an HD PCI card to get live broadcasts to record for later viewing of channels not on free streaming services of their own.
Many devices now come with a mobile phone app. One less remote needed but some require a current, recent and still under service updates of the Android or iOS. This means a phone under 4 years old. Not everyone is on a contract with a new phone every three years. Forced to get a new phone to continue to use the device is not a free update. When the device is no longer getting updates soon you can't use it as the newer phone can't install the old app, if that is, you can still find the older app to install. It used to be that an old computer (tablet device) would continue to do what it did just with no bug fixes or new features. Now perfectly good equipment needs interest based services and the app, program and internal software all have to have updates.
Portable, battery powered devices have sealed in batteries. So after 500 to 1000 recharges you can not replace the battery and have to buy a new device. That means razors, toothbrush, mobile phone, tablet, laptop, watches and even torches. Being rechargeable the cost of these devices has also risen. The electronic waste problems becomes even worse.
Microsoft is pushing Windows 11 and Windows 12 isn't far off launch. Whilst 10 years seems a reasonable time to change the operating system they are now forcing people to also buy new hardware for "security" feature. Not only is Windows 11 and 12 only able to run on certain newer processors and motherboards they are updating Windows 10 to fail to run on computers with "unsupported" processors. Computers, laptops, tables, mobiles phones have been more than good enough for most people's use for many years which is too long for the manufacturers who now look to software to brick older equipment not just that updates don't work older apps can not be loaded onto a new phone/computer and you have to buy everything new.
Just Introduce freely as an app to download to make it accessible to the public who don't want or have the means to buy a specific model tv.
I don't want to watch TV on a mobile phone
@@anthonyperkins7556how about a tablet or on a big screen television with good internet but poor tv reception
@@anthonyperkins7556 An app or a program for a desk top computer. It does not have to be a mobile phone or tablet.
@@anthonyperkins7556 they mean a TV App, of one for the many streaming devices already on the market.
@@anthonyperkins7556 You add the app to the TV lol
Not making it backwards compatible is a mistake. Nobody is going to buy a new TV just to get Freely, and even if you were planing on buying a new one this year anyway, I think things like price and/or picture quality will be more important to your decision than whether or it it has Freely on it.
In theory, on Freeview Play TV, they should be able to load an app for Freely support, but they won't do it as the manufacturers want to sell new TVs.
And Hisense would not be on my shopping list anyway.
At the moment Freely is a solution looking for a problem. Take-up will be poor until Freely-enabled external devices that output HDMI to a standard TV are widely available. Few people will be willing to chuck out a perfectly capable HD TV just to get on the Freely bandwagon.
Spock: can I speak Freely Captain.
Kirk: is this a double entendres?
Spock: no that’s illogical
Me: LMAO
Obviously not but I don't think many will even factor it in to a purchase decision
Like me, perfect LG 49" 1080p TV yea it's 10 years old ish, yea it dosn't have all the apps but it does have freview, has some streaming, has some apps, does media share. I won't be mitered on spending another 3-500 quid on a new TV when mine works perfectly fine, no dead pixels, no bad picture.
I mean why waste the HDMI port?
@@Meowwentthedinoim in the same boat, I’ve got an 11 year old 1080p Samsung Plasma TV, works perfectly fine and I am not prepared to get rid of it and spend hundreds that I don’t have on a whole new TV. This is gonna be a complete failure if they do not release an accessory like a set top box or HDMI stick for this thing.
Freely is an idiotic idea. They want to replace a system which is completely self sufficient to one that requires a separate system to function. They are adding more possible failure points such as if the internet goes down you lose your service. Also if you have multiple people using the internet you could end up with dropouts as multiple devices compete for the available bandwidth.
There is also the fact that internet is a paid service so it will make it so that those without an internet connection would no longer have access to free TV services.
They are trying to push too quickly. In order for this to work you need to first make sure that the infrastructure required is actually capable across everywhere with good redundancy.
FREELY is designed to track its users to make sure they have a license, This service can tell what you're watching, when you're watching and on which device you watched it on. NO MORE avoiding the TV license fee.
Freely is not an idiotic idea. I have no means to connect an aerial or dish. I would love Freely so I can get that normal TV like experience. This video is not very well informed. This service is to work alongside Freeview not replace it. It's to encourage young people who maybe only watch internet TV to watch more free to air tv. Freeview play and Freeview are not the same thing. Freeview play is an app that collates on demand video for core channels, makes no sense to have it alongside freely. There is no plan to switch off Freeview signals, will they propose this eventually? Maybe but I doubt it will happen for decades, too many people regularly use it.
@@learningpianoat61 not an issue, either pay the license fee or don't watch live TV or BBC iPlayer content. You're still free to choose
Freely ain't free as u will require a yearly TV licence as it contains BBC services 😅
I'm gobsmacked that we're talking about a new television platform in 2024 and nary a mention of 4K/HDR even though those technologies have been out and standardised for yonks now.
you can buy 8K TVs now if you have money to burn and 80-90% of Free to air services are still in 576p SD, British TV is a laughing stock
@@BronyumHexoflorideIf I had my way Freeview would go all DVB-T2 and DVB-UHD standard and I'd throw out this Freely nonsense.
@@BronyumHexofloride majority of TV worth watching was made in the SD era. Most of the non public service channels that broadcast SD show older shows or garbage. All the main services are available in HD where I live.
Freely is the first step to delivering a high quality viewing experience. Broadcasting over the air or satellite is expensive and the airwaves are limited or better used for 6G so this offers an easier way to get better quality TV channels without disruption to the millions of existing TVs “No more retunes” Once DVB-I gets out of trials and gets adopted there will be a shift in the industry. Meta Data may still be sent OTA for satellite services as it’s a great way to secure subscriptions until Ci+ USB is adopted. The ISP’s won’t lose out as Targeted advertising will be adopted and revenue shares will be available and ISPs will launch services to the giant panel that used to be called a TV. Freely is an Operator Ap its truly Leading edge technology it can be updated seamlessly, so lots of possibilities. You can also “uninstall it” if you want to use satellite no problem and just relaunch the App in a few seconds. But for most people being able to have a Tv that doesn’t need a Co-Axial cable in the UK has taken 91 years…
Why can't they offer it all on their website? Then you don't need a new TV or set-top box.
Absolutely
S4C is the channel/programme number four licence. 'channel 4' has always been on programme number 8 [or 7] originally on analogue TV 'channel 4' was not available in Wales, all masts carried S4C. This changed when Freeview launched in the early 2000s & as it's not a Wales' public service broadcaster, it's further down the list. 'Channel 4' was launched for Northern Ireland, Scotland, England.
S4C isn't even the Welsh C4 replacement that it used to be. As far as I'm aware it doesn't carry C4 programming any more.
Everything connected to the Internet 24/7 skynet is coming
6:41 i think this list refers to channel placement. in wales, s4c is usually in channel 4's place while channel 4 is moved up to like 7 or 8 or something on freeview.
Freely will be about as successful as smart motorways.
so are they expecting that in the near future: The internet will become totally reliable with no downtime, or that a back up service will be available. And that a basic internet service adequate to provide TV services will be offered completely free to everyone? If not, then this is not an upgrade or anything positive! Why are people being conditioned to pay for everything that they used to get either free or a one off payment? People readily accepting paying over and over again for music or films they will never own a copy of? This isn't a positive in any way, it will further shut out people who dont have the means to pay. Public service TV should be for everyone.
Why isn’t this just an App? Crazy
Is what I thought they would do first for everyone with a streaming box already... gets into more homes quick
I wanted to write app for them but their marketing team is not responding
I expect one reason there isn't an app at the present time is due to Freely using the TV aerial to pull in additional channels to the Freely TV Guide. This probably requires specific support from the TV manufacturer to allow Freely to access the TV's aerial and tuner. Thus you will only see Freely being bundled with new TVs for early adopter brands, like Hisense, in the first year or two.
With such a limited number of channels at launch there probably isn't much point having a Freely app at this stage in the role out. All the Freely channels available at launch are all available via their own existing catch-up apps and provide the ability to catch up or watch live TV (BBC and ITV).
As more channels migrate to Freely in the future and Freely's ability to use a TV's aerial is removed, you may well see a Freely App introduced for each major TV OS. But I suspect an app will be a few years away.
The reason it's not an app is that you can switch off location features and make it harder for the license to gether evidence of what you watch. This new system is funded by the BBC to check up on you. If you don't have a license and you watch ANYTHING on FREELY you will be made to buy a license.
It's not an app Simple because it contains BBC services so a lot of people won't download it due to needing a TV licence to use it .
I might have been interested in Freely, but I'm definitely NOT interested in a Hisense TV.
Difficult to understand why my existing 4K smart TV cannot be compatible with Freely. After all, I've watched Wimbledon in 4K via streaming as of several years ago. So the set is physically capable of streaming 4K. So why can't an app be provided that will stream Freely to existing smart TVs?
I hope they make a Freely App for phones, tablets, and set top boxes (Apple TV, Fire TV, etc). Also, like to see some LG TVs get Freely.
Freely!
Going to Currys for advice? LOL.
If you purchase a gold plated HDMI cable, your current TV will then be Freely ready. 😂
I've been to one and no Hisense TV has any mention of Freely.
So Freesat was the same in the beginning. This is a free service. Other providers may come along. I'm not disappointed. As for the hybrid system currently, this is useful
Freely tvs have been released.
will they be releasing an app? for example for use on a fire stick/games console or laptop/PC?

When analogue is no longer an option in homes after 2025, homes will pay for broadband whether they want it or not. Households will need to update a few things, and that will include old tvs, old phones, and probably old security. Freely will be on the new televisions you will be able to buy and will use the broadband that you pay for but might not even use.
if they will release a set top box like they did with freeview early on, i will try it.
If a TV can get streaming services it should be able to get an updated app to run on it. But any internet device (desktop, laptop, tablet) should be able to pick up the services like BBC iPlayer and ITV X. It really is not necessary to buy any new hardware as long as you have broadband yet the only way to get the services now is with a new television set.
Ridiculous that the Hisense TV that I bought only LAST YEAR doesn't support Freely.
And why would it support a system specific to a small island nation in the North Atlantic?
Hopefully they get a software update to support Freely. If the game consoles and other devices get Freely then that will be ideal
@@brandonlee7382 and what incentive do Sony/microsoft/nintendo have to support a niche TV system which is exclusive to a small island nation in the North Atlantic? The days of the UK being relevant have long since passed.
I love your hat 💙💛
no dish, no box! except...you're gonna need to buy a new TV!
not a chance - and I wouldn't buy a Hisense either
I mean my LG TV does over the air updates so I'm not sure why they wouldn't just let most smart TV manufacturers who have firmware update options upgrade the software to Freely. I'm sure from a hardware standpoint it's nothing different or new and it is simply a software change/thing. The lack of a software update for modern smart TV's is a bit silly and shows this is a money grabbing initative in some ways too.
There have been some hardware updates to televisions. The screen technology has also changed. For most people those differences come when eventually they get a new TV but are not enough for them to need or want a new TV. One way around is to move some of the electronics into a separate unit. Modular TVs existed in the 80s - split speakers and audio from screen and receiver box. A hub, slot in card (like PC cards) could extend the life of the media devices so you are not forced to make a complete change every 5 years like we have to do with mobile phones as support lasts for only a couple of years and new need a new phone (new operating system) just to run the app to switch on your app enabled smart device.
Where is the Android app for all of us that use the likes of Firesticks or Nvidia Shields or Android capable TVs? lets just force everyone to buy a new TV eh?
Probably a good idea for Freely to maybe get on releasing an APP sooner rather than later because some clever person will probably find a way to pull the app off those TVs that ship with it so it can be modified to be used on other devices.
with an arial you pay once, with internet you keep paying and it keeps going up each year
Hi is there a freely android app that I can download, and where do I find it
I have LG C3 which is about 6 months old and i paid alot of money for it, i hope and expect TVs that are under 2 years old to get the Freely app. I haven't got anymore HDMI ports to have a extra device for Freely. Also bring Freely to the game consoles so then i can have that as a option too
You can actually buy an HDMI port splitter btw.
@firstlast5350 True it's just mine in that past as been a bit dodgy. I really like having less cables. Also I think TVs should come with more HDMI ports, cheaper TVs only have 2 and they should honestly have 4 atleast. My TV has 4 but I have so many consoles so I need atleast 8, also soundbar takes up one. I got Nintendo Switch,ps5,xbox, and old xbox 360 that isn't plugged it at the moment, also soundbar. Extra cables do annoy me.
All im saying is my tv or Xbox is capable of having the Freely app so it should happen. If it don't happen then oh well I geuss I will get a shiny box, hopefully 4k content can be possible and dolby vision support.
@@brandonlee7382 I have three display ports from my Freesat/Freeview/cable enabled media player. The 65" touch panel screen can also be controlled from two computers. I use WiSA for audio (so not needing an HDMI ARC.eARC port). The PCI card is used to download programmes that are not on catch up services (iPlayer,. ITV X). A get_iplayer type program would ne most useful for Freely but would need a URL link to the programme or series.
The "whole idea" has always been to unify DTT, satellite and streaming services seamlessly on a single interface and EPG.
Phasing out satellite and terrestrial is a longer term objective, the hybrid platform will support that, as it will make it irrelevant how each channel is actually arriving.
I have Sky Stream and it's buggy as hell but getting everything over internet is a big thing for me because I'm in a bad Freeview reception area and my flat's rooftop communal satellite dish gives pretty flaky Freesat reception so getting free of those delivery methods is the key attraction but if Sky doesn't improve the software then I'm definitely looking to switch once my 18 month lock-in is over.
I was with Virgin once and I won't go back there so unless Freely releases a stand-alone box EE TV will be my only (legal) option (I think?) but it does look a decent one if I am willing to change broadband supplier as well - or if EE drops the requirement to also get broadband from them in order to sign up to the TV service.
I don't have a television receiver. I use a Freesat and Freeview PCI card in a media PC. I now only access BBC programmes from iPlayer and BBC Sounds. Having all the other channels available from one program interface would be idea. Why buy a TV where you have to have old technology that is going to be useless in just a few years? Will Freely aim to replace ITV X and iPlayer? Costly to run two internet based systems.
Who the hell gonna buy a Hisence TV for this😂😂 its DOA should have released with an App for Samsung Lg and android based tvs
Only very early days but I wonder whether in the future Freely might evolve to include the option to include paid "bolt-ons" for extra content e.g. NowTV for extra channels and PPV sports and movies.
I'm guessing that as a Free service Freely might not want to introduce a Freely billing infrastructure just for that but maybe if it had slots in the EPG to integrate extra channels and the ability to interface with NowTV backend to stream them of course it could get some extra revenue via referral/reseller kickbacks for people who signed up directly with NowTV and then accessed the channels via a Freely system.
I assume that there is some precedent for this already with companies like like EE (TV) and Virgin Media getting some revenue (kick backs) from NowTV although in their cases the kickback would probably be bigger because EE and Virgin are handling the billing but some sort of more modest referral fee paid by Now TV to Freely would seem appropriate to expand Now TVs footprint and it would give Freely customers who are willing to pay the option to add a few Sky channels to their line-up. I would probably take that option if it was reasonably priced.
Will there be a app on the app stores coming? Love your videos keep it up.
Needs to be an App on Apple Tv for me before i'd considering ditching sky tv, In this day and age it should also be streaming channels in 4K HDR where the content is available.
4's catch-up service is currently only SD. To put it bluntly, HiSense TVs are cheap Chinese cr*p, and will fail very quickly.
As an Australian I have a question about your Freely/Freeview. Do you guys still have the TV licences? Or was that scraped?
As I wondered how its "Free Tv" if you still have to pay for a licence?
It's the bbc's way of having you pay for a tv licence ..so freely is a lie !
Yes bc people still need a license to watch BBC content on IPlayer, so it’s gonna mean paying twice, tv licence and faster internet to support all the streaming.
Freely is *interesting*
My new TV isn't compatible, but I'm not throwing out a new TV just for Freely
You wait for your current tv to lose support for all its apps. My tv is from 2018 which is a Samsung smart 4k tv. Which has tv plus which is are fast channels. Freesat & sky satellite will end in 2028. Freeview has until 2035 buy it’s likely going to be 2032 as ofcom can start to tell them to start shutting it down.
@@NicholasJH96 The satellite deal ends in 2028. Who knows, Sky and Freesat may renew it before then?
I only got a smart tv a couple weeks ago and there's no way i'm upgrading it again just for freely!
@@NicholasJH96And viewers will make their choice and kick the broadcasters up the f**'ing backside!
channel 4 has paused most of its shows now what if it went off?
Is Freely a replacement for standalone per-channel streaming apps? Or is it just something you can use if you want to?
It works by signing in to the streaming services. Eg, you sign into BBC iPlayer and ITV X, so the channels appear in the EPG. So BBC 1 will be number 1, BBC Two number 2 and ITV at number 3 etc. However, if you have a smart tv/stick etc, you can already stream the channels. Freely streamlines this, by placing the channels on the streaming services, into an EPG. So you don't have to keep switching streaming services, to change channel.
Needs to be a downloadable from the app store. I'd be happy to make the switch but WILL NOT be buying a new TV to get access to it
no need for a license then if its on line streaming?
You will still need a licence if you watch "live TV" programs as they are broadcast. If you only watch catchup services then, like now, a licence is not needed.
Needs to be an app on smart tvs/Apple TV/firestick etc gonna be very slow getting traction otherwise 🤷🏻♂️
The lack of an app or dongle is a massive mistake.
Not many people will buy a new TV just for Freely and their advert is misleading "All you need is Wi-Fi"
I think your incorrect when you say they want to get everyone off freeview as quick as possible - this is a long term, natural transition that needs to happen at a sensible pace.
Just as when freeview launched, and to a degree Youview, people are not going to just bin everything and buy freely stuff. They will naturally move over to it when the life cycle of their existing equipment expires.
First step is to get as much equipment out there with it in as possible (which is probably why the launch hasn't been a massive event as retailers don't have much of the kit yet), then over time people will naturally migrate. As for switching off transmitters, that wont be for at least another 8 to 10 years I would think, the advantage between moving from Freeview to Freely is no where near as compelling as the move was from analoge to digital.
Also the UK's full fibre network needs to be virtually completed before any real transmitter switch off can occur - I have 5 TV's in my house, Imagine if all of those are streaming live TV at a time, the experiance is gonna be pretty crap without a decent full fibre connection.
Why haven't they had the sense to have it in an app that can be added by anyone, on Fire Stick, PS4, PS5, Xbox, Android boxes, Android phones, IPhones/IPads etc, not having to buy specific TVs a la Sky Glass, also helping to keep it as closed off as possible so you have no prospects of recording etc, this approach deserves to fail! It doesn't even offer anything beyond what is available already!
I’m a Brit living here in the States. Any chance we can get this over here?
I'd say so if you use a VPN.
It's one of those things that because it requires a new TV and a specific one at that most people won't be using it for a very long time. It really needs freeview boxes that will be coming out to also support it so those who have TVs that don't natively have access to it can get it. I'm all for a freeview service that is streamed due to more channels being HD by default and removing the picture breaks up to to poor weather or even being too sunny but if I have to spend hundreds on a brand new TV for that then I will skip it until one of the ones I recently brought stops working.
Thanks for the info.. is there going to be an app for firetv/android, most households have one or the other which would be great and save a lot of costs replacing a new tv?
All you need is WiFi and a TV licence 😅
Other countries, like here in Australia, have apps that can be added to smart TVs , tablets, and smartphones. Nothing needs to be built into a specific tv model.
Why is UK needing TV manufacturers like Hisense to load this custom app?
What about phones and tablets?
Do you need a TV licence for each device?
Is there an app for it yet ???
No, this is a soft launch. It will probably be another failure though, so don't sweat it.
I hope an Apple TV app will be available, I doubt it but it would be great.
Only needs an app.
6:47 Channel 4 has always been on channel 8 in Wales. S4C took it first.
It's actually on channel 7 on Freeview and on channel 106 on Freesat.
Freely has missed a massive opportunity at launch. Live and on-demand ‘apps’ that can be installed on existing tv’s and streaming boxes (Fire, Apple TV etc) from BBC, itv, Channel 4 and 5 already exist. Bringing those existing, separate apps into a single Freely app would make far more sense. Allowing people with existing equipment to use the new service. I don’t think most people will ditch their existing tv’s, unless they are on the market for a new one, just to get Freely, especially as it has very limited streaming and still requires an arial (so essentially much the same as Freeview / Freeview Play).
Has anyone thought of people in my situation....
I don't pay a licence as I don't want live TV or bbc I player.
As part of the conditions laid out I took down my aerial and detuned my sets, removing the epg just in case.
I also consciously avoid I player, in order to play a straight game.
Now with future sets with freely, does this mean that with the WiFi on, which I.use for itvx, you tube and Netflix, I will get forced access to live TV (thus making me illegal by default?
Thus, I will be robbed of you tube and other catchup apps without getting live TV chucked in as well and having to pay?
I shall not be happy if that's the case.
"All you need is wi-fi" says the blurb. And a Hisense TV... where are the Chromecast / Firestick / Apple TV apps? If you can only get Freely with a new Freely compatible TV then the service is dead at birth.
A niche product made even more niche by the insistence that you will have to buy a new TV to be able to get it, if I wanted to get a so-called free TV I would just buy a free view or Freesat box saving potentially hundreds of pounds in the process
The BBC removed regional programmes from standard definition BBC One and then closed down all standard definition versions of all their channels. To see BBC on Freesat you must have a receiver that can get HD channels. Many people have 1080p screen that only have standard 720x576 receivers. After 20 years Freeview is still limited to 7 HD channels. Freesat has 20. Freesat has lost from the install and viewing guide channels like GREAT TV. The cost of Freeview and Freesat have risen and to deliver over the internet costs have fallen. Other channels will move from these services but ought to be available via Freely through the single interface and also enabling all the channels to be at least 1920x1080. Some of the channels with 504x576 enlarged to 4K is so outdated. .
Wonder if they'll release a mobile app, currently use it too see what's on, and launch the correct app on our phone or tablet
I can emulate the good old analogue days with ony 5 channels available 🤣 (edit: suppose multiple channels from these broadcasers)
why get a new device when we have apps on the app stores and our PCs??
Hisense site has no mention of it & the specs on the TV details don't list it. I'm a little confused on this.
Sir will freely work for me in southern ireland i have a sony tv
Carlos Free TV Freeview 1:27
I dont own a TV. I only have monitors! Currently watch "TV" either via a Now Tv Box or a Panasonic PVR. I will not be rushing out for Freely! Not too worried about things being backwardly compatible. However, if they are going to turn off all those TV transmitters does that mean we dont have to pay for a TV License? I might if the BBC offered it buy a subscription to stream their streams but i'm not going to pay for a TV license to stream.
So everyone will have to pay for internet access, great or rather grate. Will this be available on phones? Some people might not be able to afford broadband so their phone is their only option. The landline phones are now internet based, so no longer to be relied on in case of various environmental issues, it shifts the cost for the infrastructure onto the state so one can understand why the privatised companies pushed for this. Apparently we 'have to move on and go forward' but there seems to be a lack of planning or even forethought regarding the direction. Fortunately radio remains available and the content is generally rather better than the TV.
I am sceptical, I remember reading E M Fortser's 'The Machine Stops' at school and it has coloured my view of technology ever since.
i'm trying to find a supplier with TVs or boxes in stock, cant find any yet
I think Curry’s should be selling some Hisense TV’s that have recently launched which have Freely built in.
Can't seem to find any TVs yet with the freely software... May have to wait a while
So what is the URL to connect to Freely? Or is there an app?
If any party campaigns to scrap this daft switch-off in the next general election, they have my vote. We're putting far too much of our communications infrastructure into a broadband basket. BT wants to me to unplug my old copper line phone for VOIP, so if the broadband goes down, or I get a power cut, won't be able to call the emergency services (unless I pay extra for a mobile phone contract I may not want because of the cost of living crisis making me tighten my belt)
I'm glad TiVo in the UK has returned. Used to be Sky and later Virgin.
It is the softest of a soft launch.
It will take awhile to get up to speed.
The 2024 Hisence TV's only launched yesterday.
Probably wake a few weeks to get into shops.
The only freely app available on my phone is an insurance company.
It's not a mobile app.
They would probably have to make a streaming package for the ISP and incorporate the license fee into the rates, if they intend to keep the fee and change it all to streaming like this.... Just thinking as an American though.
May 28th hisense release freely
this really doesn't seem worth buying a new tv, until they make this into a box or more accessible I'm gonna stick with freeview.
So why haven't they done this via a streaming box like sky stream. Meaning you could use it on any TV with a usb connection or with a HDTV converter.
is it going to be on fire stick / roku
No
Gotta buy a new tv to get it as it's NOT a download or an app ?
Top that the TV"s are mental money in comparison.
Gonna die a short death with that setup
Not so "free" ly when you have to pay for a tv licence still. No point when there are so many other options with far better and varied options
Maybe they should have called it crapply.
Long overdue. It seems crazy to me that it wasn't done years ago.
So how u get it
I have a suspicion that freeview could end up like analog tv. Gone
The big difference is that Freely will take at lest 20 or 30 years to replace Freeview because of the cost of high quality broadband internet, the availability of said internet in certain parts of the UK, and the fact that many poor and lower working class individuals don’t have access to high quality broadband internet and will only get it when the government helps cover the cost of said internet. The United States had such a programme until it expired earlier this year and it hasn’t been renewed as of yet. So it’s going to take a very long time before Freeview ends.
Not going to get a new TV for this. My LG is doing great and I'm not going to throw away a perfectly good TV.
hisense tv's are rubbish. I would hold on to your LG as long as you can.
Not all pensioners can afford WiFi so this could mean they get nothing.
It’s too bad that this is landlocked to the UK. It would be so much fun to take a look at Freely even though I’m in the US.
It will have to have an internet interface and then a VPN gets to watch them from anywhere as "Free" to view.
Smart tvs will never really be smart since all apps will stop being updated fairly quick.
Question from across the pond: how does this affect the crazy 'TV Licence' rules the Brits have to contend with ?
Not sure it should but things are probably going to change there anyway. If you watch the iPlayer online, you will have to have a license, so I would assume Freely will be the same (for now). If you watch other channels online, not sure about it though. I am certain people who understand the licensing better than me will explain how Freely will work with that
@@AndrewBuckleBookReviews Cheers, thank you :)
@@AndrewBuckleBookReviews If you use Freely to watch any scheduled channel at the exact moment that it is actually being broadcast then you will need a licence. If you use Freely to access any BBCiplayer content on-demand then you will need a licence. In theory if you only use Freely to watch soley on-demand programming from exclusively non-BBC broadcasters then as the law stands you do not need a licence. The difficulty will be that if the licence enforcement people visit you and you make the mistake of letting them in, then currently the onus will be on you to prove that just because you have a set capable of receiving live television and iPlayer content it doesn't mean you actually ever watch such (and it's not clear if Freely TV's will be storing your viewing history as they go like a PC or mobile would), but then again the same issue now exists with all internet-connected devices able to display video content, which didn't exist when that part of the tv licence law was written so very long ago, so parliament will almost certainly have to debate whether to change this latter point in some way if they decide to continue with the tv licence after the next licence cycle.
Primarily Freely is for Live TV so nothing changes with regards to the TV License.
The service is awful requires you have apps and have those setup none of the channels just automatically switch straight into the program.
No Box, no dish, no aerial ! All you need is WIFI ! OH and a new TV ! probably much dearer than the other 3 put together ! A nd what about all the people who don't have wifi ? Stupidest idea ever !!!
Why not just make an app thats available on most tv app stores? Or even thats available for xbox and playstation.
This isn’t going to be good news for Ireland 🇮🇪 and the hundreds of thousands of Freesat or similar boxes when the satellite service shuts down at some stage in the future.
What's the point of the whole thing if I can't use my existing streaming boxes with an app? I'm not going to buy a new "box", I already have those from Apple, Roku and Amazon, plus a 2 year old Google TV... so I'm not going to buy a new TV either. Back to the drawing board, guys.
As I said, I can’t get Freely. And I don’t want to buy a new TV. Hope they release a box, or I have no other choice.
From what I’ve heard a box is going to be available
@@Tom_murray89 Do you know when?
@@CLC-1000unfortunately not sorry
@@Tom_murray89 That’s ok, I will just have to keep an eye on any news updates. 👍
Freely is such a horrible name.. was there a reason they couldn't have stuck with the Freeview name regardless of how it's distributed?
I have bbc player and itvx and ch4 and ch5 apps sol do not need freely but if l wanted freely why can't freely app
