    FCC rules are the main reason I cut the cord. Forcing customers to pay for a service they don't need or want allows locals to charge whatever they want.

    • @njlauren
      @njlauren ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nothing to do with FCC rules. Cable tv and Amazon are not regulated by the FCC. Local channels that get redistributed have the right as content providers to charge for it. The bundling of channels on cable or streaming is the business model they use, FCC has 0 control over it. FCC only regulates over the air, where bc of the license they can't charge for it.

      That doesn't apply to Spectrum's streaming packages. My dad has a very basic Spectrum streaming package ("TV Essentials" or something like that) for $25 per month that does not include locals. As Spectrum looks to go "streaming first" for new customers, rather than sign them up with traditional cable packages, expect this type of package to become more common.

    It's becoming a huge problem for the streaming companies that a lot of their deals are on the ad supported price instead of the ad free streaming service. I personally would never pay for a streaming service and watch ads. I already have tubi and it's free and pretty much everything comes there at some point unless it's original content from a streaming company which they don't seem to do a very good job at making. So I don't feel like I'm missing out.

      @crosslink1493 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ditto. I'm in the big Los Angeles market and the local broadcasters keep putting out less and less watchable programming. Most of it is using the "on-air-talent" from their faux "newsroom staff" to make cheap content to fill in the voids between network shows and sports programming. The one-time investment in a rooftop antenna is all its worth these days. I wouldn't pay a monthly fee to watch it.

      The obvious reason is probably smaller TH-cam channels and influencers. However, another reason is that mainstream media with the exception of Fox News (that started as a necessary counterweight) only serves a leftwing progressive audience.
      Ask any conservative viewer and they’ll tell you how biased they experience the content to be from news channels like MSNBC and CNN.
      It’s just been an extreme polarization in broadcast and print news for the past three decades especially.
      There’s actually research following this development, for example Manhattan Institute has done a study of the impact of employers hiring likeminded employees. This is a common phenomenon in ANY industry, but when it happens in journalism (or in academia for that matter) the consequences are far greater as it influences culture and politics. Today 80% of journalists profess to being left-leaning in their opinions. No matter what side you’re on politically, this should be considered a huge failure when it comes to neutrality and the premise of news reporting which is supposed to be about SHOWING rather than telling the public about news events.

    If cable companies were able to market cable channels only with add-ons like sports and local separately, that would probably bring back people that cut-the-cord. I already have locals from an antenna and having the option of buying only cable channels without the locals would be a strong consideration to go back to cable, especially if the price is good.

Philo has better convenience for $26. I just can't imagine cable matching those prices, given all the hidden fees.

No addition cost or fees for the station guide (although you might want to buy an inexpensive external hard drive or thumb drive for extra storage). It doesn't have an HDMI out, you use a Roku, Fire Stick, etc. to watch (that's a good thing, since you can watch on multiple TV's in different rooms). I bought one and I'm quite pleased. Do you think Congress should get involved? I'm thinking they probably should and regulate some of this purchase at least make them sell it as a lease not purchase. But yeah piracy could go up because of these decisions from these large corporations that's not good.

    The FCC “forcing” cable TV providers to offer local stations is only going to make them less competitive against streaming/satellite services. Is the FCC unaware of this trend call cord-cutting?

    • @njlauren
      @njlauren ปีที่แล้ว

      The FCC doesn't force them to carry. If a local channel invokes must carry, that can't charge for it. If they decide to carry the channel voluntarily, they pay for it.
      The reason they carry local channels is a lot of people want them. If they made them optimal the price for those wanting it would be much higher ( less subscribers, more per subscriber)
      The other reason cable providers carry local channels is the ppl who own them also own other content, like ABC being owned by Disney which also has ESPN. Disney could tell the cable provider you want Disney,ESPN, you carry ABC.
      Streaming services are even less regulated. They aren't bound by must carry, they carry locals bc ppl want them & same issue if optional. Real reason is likely the provider requires having local if they want ESPN,etc

      That is a good point, it depends on who owns the local station, wasn't thinking of that. Paramount isn't big enough to run Apple. Disney, maybe, but they've been going downhill for a while. I'm a huge advocate for physical media. I'm not sure whether Apple would help or hurt that department of Disney. Disney's purchase of 20th Century, Marvel etc. as well as owning Touchstone & Buena Vista, is the reason we're not getting half of the movies on disc we should be getting. Disney also often saves the best specs for their Disney+ streaming & gives us sub-par AV options on their home video releases. I'm intrigued by the possibility of an Apple buy-out, but frightened it would spell the end of physical media from all Disney-owned companies. Disney already stopped physical media sales in some overseas markets. 😫

    They will never completely eliminate piracy when it comes to streaming they're basically playing whack-a-mole take one down and other five pop up. And the reason these are popular is because they're inexpensive. Content creators need to make programming that's affordable and a lot of the time they don't so people take into their own hands and go the illegitimate route

      Maybe, but A.I. is making it far easier to automatically electronically monitor streams and catch pirates. This isn't the 1980s anymore.

    Apple is not AOL. Apple is a $3 trillion company which is the greatest in history. If they buy Paramount or Disney, Apple will not be spit out. AOL went out of business because they fell behind the times. It’s a simple as that. Very very very few people have landline Internet anymore. Apple is a trendsetter and also a follower. They may not be the first one with the latest technology. But they wait and put it out when it’s the very best.

    If I were still using Cable TV customer, I would want the local channels to be optional. It is odd that the Cable TV companies are "required" to carry the local channels, and yet local TV stations every so often get their panties in a bunch and raise their cost to the Cable TV companies. It seems the Cable TV operators are at the mercy of the local TV stations. When I had Cable TV, I always desired the à la carte option for all channels.
