Exactly what I was looking for!! just took my '02 Explorer for NYS inspection; Valvoline guy said it wouldn't pass due to the parking brake not holding vehicle when in drive. funny thing is I just replaced my brake pads (front & rear) the week before. Guy said it might be a loose cable. Even the Chilton manual doesn't give you this detail. Gonna work on this coming weekend. Thanks again 1A Auto!!!!!

Great video! Nice tip on fishing the bottom retainer pin with a piece of wire. Assembling the first side was a bit of a struggle. Here are 3 tips that made the second side go much quicker...
    (1) Use the original pins and clips. I found them to be much heavier and easy to install than the replacement kit.
    (2) Install the lightweight bottom spring BEFORE inserting the star adjuster assembly. Having the spring on first keeps things in place and makes it easier to install the adjuster.
    (3) Use a long thin screwdriver to install the heavy spring, not the locking pliers (unless you like busted knuckles). Insert the shaft of the screwdriver through the spring hook and put the tip of the screwdriver into the destination hole, then pry out, sliding the spring down the shaft and guiding the spring end into the hole, just like a shoehorn. Easy peasy! An old-school drum brake spring tool uses this same concept.
My only disagreement is that the installed shoes should not make any contact with the rotor. The Ford spec says the shoe diameter should be .042" less than the drum diameter. Adjust the diameter to just contact the drum (as you describe), then back off the adjuster a few clicks so that there is no contact.

Arctic Minibike I’ll take you up on tip 3. I cannot for the life of me get that too spring back in. It is super strong and the locking needle nose clips will not hold on to it long enough to get it into the hole. The angle is also just horrible too and that doesn’t help.

Working on my '97 Eddie Bauer Explorer AWD rear disc brakes and found the parking brake shoes as well as the rotors and disc brake pads were completely toast. I have never seen such damaged rotors and zero pad material left. On the other hand, I have only done disc brakes 3 times in my life and I've been driving since the 70's! Bought this Explorer about 7 months ago and just didn't realize how bad the brakes were until I had new tires put on and was told about the brakes. Anyway, these parking brakes have 2 upper springs, 1 inboard and 1 outboard of the shoes. What a bear it is to get these suckers back into place! Had to give up for the night but I am' going to get those Vice Grip needle nose pliers - they should be of great help. I found that placing the inboard spring into the holders first and then leveraging the shoes apart to get them into their slots was the easiest for me. Gotta wrangle with them quite a bit though. Good video, thanks for putting it out there.

I’d like to see this video for the earlier 98-02 grand marquis. I’ve got a thump in the rear end of my 02 grand marquis and I found this earlier style pin that I saw on the disassembly on this video fall out from behind the rotor

is there an upgraded system that can hold bigger tires? the stock system is inadequate if you are running oversize tires

You edited your video at 6:05 and don't actually show how you got that spring on. This video didn't help me to complete the job as it's missing a real way to get that spring on.
For folks who are trying, here are the tips. First, remove the two metal plates that he Ebrake cable attach too, and pull them out of the brake housing through the grommet. Be sure to align the wheel hub so that the back end of the lug bolts are clear of the housing the spring needs to go over. Take your two brake shoes, and attach the return spring. With the spring attached, stretch it over the housing. Then you'll need to attach the pins, adjusting bolt, retaining spring, and reinsert the two plates for the cable, use a screwdriver to pry open the shoes to slip it in. This is the trick that worked for me.

I’m replacing my parking brake shoes, but when I put everything together, my rotors, don’t want to fit over my parking brake shoes. Is there any reason why?

You're saying there should be slight pressure when putting the drum-in-hat back on over the parking brake shoes. I'm guessing this is with the parking brake pedal engaged?

ok i assume this would basically apply to an 05 ford escape as well? looks similar enough.
my problem is i just got one that is well used and the end of the parking brake cable eyelets are disconnected...and there's absolutely nothing between them and the rotors. no springs no pins no shoes, it's empty. the backing plate/housing flange whatever it's called is all deformed looking as if from massive heat and i'm not so sure those pins that attach to the shoes will mount anymore...maybe why there's nothing there. where do i get a replacement backing plate and do i have to remove the hub??
one brake had the little hook piece that the cable eyelet attaches to, but after fiddling with it and driving around it fell inside the drum out of the slot and got broken, and i cannot see it in parking brake hardware kits for sale. where do i find that piece? it's the part that spreads the shoes and attaches to the cable eyelet.

Generally, you have to press the hub out to replace the dust shields, but you might be able to find split shields. If not, you can cut them in half.
