  • this is just an extra thing non project related i thought about and alot of people asked about so i dove right in on it tonight to swap the IAC driver chip from a bricked p01 to a non IAC p59, we will see if it worked tomorrow!

    If you use a heat gun on a board use aluminum foil to protect all areas of the board you are not heating. To install the chip on the board without the chip do not use a heat gun, get a desolder hand vacuum pump and desolder wick. After removing all the solder from the pads install the chip and manually resolder each pin with a solder iron

      In all fairness.. he did say that if this works then he's get the tools to do this correctly. But yeah.. it was painful to watch, lol. This must be how pro engine builders feel seeing him swap a cam with an impact in 30 minutes.. haha

      Even Matt doesn't literally hammer cams into blocks. This is sorta the electronics equivalent of that.
      If it doesn't work, and I'm not saying it won't, we won't know if it was the installation method or the concept. Since he has 2 of these to try out, he may be trying to test both at the same time. I just don't want an initial failure to end the experiment because I think we're all hoping it works.

      Yeah I might have tried soldering braid for sure at least tried it, its easy to get at Ratshack, heck I think many of them (although these days there are less tools in many of the stores) have a solder sucker. I'm sure it was a late night, hey lets just try this so I won't hate, been there done that but it usually limited my success with it.... But hey we love Matts no fucks given approach, I'm sure if there is no damage to the chip with heat it should work if that is the only differences between the ECU.

    If you don't have a desolder braided wick or desolder pump, I have had good success with just using a very small drill bit and drilling the solder (sodder? in US). Drill the holes, stick the legs through, then apply new solder to the legs with a soldering iron.

  • @impala340
    @impala340 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    What you can try is after you reheat the solder, use a light puff of compressed air to blow it out.

    Cmon man, heat the pins up and dip in flux, then reheat and dip in silver then reheat and just send it! Don't beat the board at all, just the pins, that's why they're long and away from the chip! Practice on a silver bread board a couple of times and you will nail it, you're smart AF my man!

  • @thetriode
    @thetriode 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Typically if I'm trying to insert a part like that, I'll clean the holes out by heating them individually with the iron and blowing the solder out with some air. Even just blowing will typically work. After that you need to apply new solder of course, but not a biggie. Heat guns are great for salvage IME, but not so much install.
    If you want a desoldering iron, they're great. I have a cheapie $12 Radio Shack one that is actually really handy although admittedly I Typically use it on a larger board. If you don't want to go to the expense of one, some solder braid will work decently as well. Or blowing.

    The Job you are trying to do is much easier if you heat the board you want to install into and than use compressed air to blow the solder out. Than you have a empty board and you can than just stick the legs through the board and solder from the bottom. Easy Peesi. Just food for thought

    Heat gun + air compressor blowgun is your friend - heat the board with the heatgun until the solder melts, blowgun the holes clear, do the same withe chip, should be able to put it in, then just one by one solder the legs back up.

    there's likely a half dozen+ things not populated on the board, where and what is the big question, other than the resistor or diode right near the chip.
    I doubt schematics and materials lists are available, so you'd have to reverse engineer the circuitry and do tons of comparison, lots of head bashing into a brick wall :)

  • @PhattyMo
    @PhattyMo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's probably a 'house numbered' chip,specifically for GM. It may cross-reference to a standard chip part number,but only GM knows which one. It could even be custom manufactured for GM..a standard motor-driver chip,with some custom 'tweaks' inside,who knows. One possible issue with swapping just the chip,if they didn't install the chip in the other ECU,they may have also omitted any supporting circuitry it may need..extra capacitors,resistors,whatever. So you'd need to add those too.
    Don't think I've ever done rework with a heat gun...I bought a hot-air station for that! But,that's the Sloppy way! :)

    If this works, you're going to prove everything I know about working with electronics to be wrong. Generally shit with heat sinks on it (and most other shit too) doesn't like going into the broiler.
    If it fails, I encourage you to let one of your subs (I'd do it) volunteer to try it again with fresh parts or at least let us help. Wickng the solder out, placing the chip, and resoldering it properly isn't that big of a deal.
    Then again, I'm sure plenty of other people have said that plenty of the stuff you've done wouldn't work, so by no means am I taking a hard line here. There is a magic to Sloppy that can't be denied by anyone.
