Florian Gadsby is one of my favorite artists and a potter I really look up to. His work is impeccable, and I have no business trying to recreate it, but let's see how it goes!

Square rim for a mug?! SQUARE RIM FOR A MUG? WHAT ON EART... Okay okay, calm down Florian, phew. You did FANTASTICALLY and this is such an interesting watch too, you've dissected me. What a glorious video, Mia, and just like you said, you learnt so much attempting somebody else's style, right? That's exactly what my apprenticeships felt like, forcing yourself to adapt and to create someone else's pots can do wonders for your own skill, and everything learnt is transferable and can be channeled back into your own work.
I appreciate all the kindnesses to no end, but hey, you're a brilliant potter with a different style and way of doing things, and that's precisely why this craft is so fascinating. It would suck if we all made the same pots.

THIS is what artists who know what making art is all about. How wonderful that an inspiration/muse/mentor takes the time to be encouraging and follow along. I think Mia is so terrific, and I think you're terrific for a lovely comment. This is so terrific to see.

You are an absolute gem Sir Gadsby. Mia is spunky, brave, talented, humble and honest. It’s why we all love and cherish her. This was one of the most fun TH-cam videos I’ve seen yet! Getting to read your response right after was the cherry on top! Going along with what you said about the value in learning to recreate other potters pots, who should Mia try and recreate next?!? And how about you try and recreate something Mia has made? Maybe her tile board with her studio name but with your own? Thank you for being such a true gentleman. It’s a pleasure to watch you both. Cheers from Maryland in the US!

    OKAY. The click bait worked.
EDIT* I think you did well! :) As an artist that trained in academia, I want you to know that the feeling is 100% mutual when it comes to training. There is something beautiful and out-of-reach to the work you make when it isn't influenced by academia (or traditional forms of training in any art & craft). I think it is important to acknowledge the differences without saying one is "better" than another!
You're super talented and you gained a new subscriber!

I started throwing about 2 years ago and learned almost everything about throwing and trimming by watching and dissecting florians videos, which are amaaazing and super educational - BUT watching You as an experienced potter trying and struggling yourself, really reminded me how crazy complex his technique is, and that I should never pressure myself to recreate his perfection, as i sometimes do. I really needed this, thank you so much for your honest and inspiring, playful approach to learning - i really love your videos (& pots!)

Yep! I've been inspired by a bunch of potters on the TH-cams. You, Florian, Alchemy Ceramics, and a bunch others. I tried throwing like Florian for a while and sort of found my own "voice" in the process. I like to throw porcelain with sharp angles these days. My Ma bought your teapot template and now she's got a bunch around the house!

Please don't be so hard on yourself Mia! Just because you're not traditionally trained doesn't mean that you can't excel at your style of pottery. Florian may be a precision machine, but you excel at organic shapes. I don't know that Florian's need for precision would allow him to create completely organic flowing pieces like you do. And the pieces that you make are beautiful! So, please don't sell yourself short. Especially when you are still young, and have many years left to hone your craft. ❤

But from my perspective, you are Florian, cause I came here to learn from you. Imposter syndrome is a funny thing. Thank you for putting it all out there for people to learn from. 🙏

Thanks for verbalizing that so well. I love FG's creations because of their clean distinct style. As a untrained beginner like you and Mia, it's a exciting but daunting journey to find that personal artistic style. Although, I just wonder if FG has a wild side and wants to reinvent... e.g. Michael Jordan plays baseball, Garth Brooks is Chris Gains. You get what I'm saying?

    • @Cobra_Laser_Face
      @Cobra_Laser_Face 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

@kleinwolterinkable I do! I find freedom in having no idea what I'm doing. As I learn what is possible and what is me, will I find myself feeling boxed in? Or is there so much to learn in this craft that I'll be able to wander aimlessly forever? IDK, but it is a very fun thought.

Well done! I'm a beginner, self taught the past 6 months, but with a job and hectic life. I love watching your channel, but yes, when I found Florian last winter (and so many like yourself), I was having trouble and it was when I'd try to replicate a piece, I placed his video over my wheel and wow that helped so much. Just a different solution after trying a few other ways. BTW you're just fine, I was a painter for 40 years and went to art school with an excellent ceramics program (KCAI early 80's) but I never was able to get it as an elective and always wanted to, so now I am. I realize my old classmates may be masters now at their craft, but that doesn't deter me from trying it now. In fact they have been encouraging me. I think what I can bring in printmaking, painting, and sculpture can be of essence to what I create in ceramics. Pardon my monologue.

Mia,! This is outstanding! What a fabulous job you have done. I was sitting there cheering “You can do it!” the whole time. I sure do believe in you. Your work is always incredible and your own style is such a vibe. What an interesting way to challenge yourself. I absolutely adore the teapot. The slightly different proportions of yours makes it look grounded, comfy and cosy. I have a thing for this kind of pottery shape. When I select something to buy in a shop, I always hold it in my hands to see how it feels. I love bowls and mugs that I can cup in my palms and your teapot looks like it would feel good to hold it. Florian Gadsby is an amazing artist and I so admire his work. His attention to detail is incredible and the way he finesses every aspect of everything he throws is incredible. You have your own unique style and ways of finessing and finishing your work and it’s beautiful in its own way.

It's always a great skill challenge to attempt to replicate others. Not in a "I'm going to steal their style" way, but to force yourself to understand the hands someone else's work. You never know what creativity you'll unlock in your own skill sets when you do something out of the box. I've attempted to craft works in his style, and it has been very beneficial to my work as well. Well done!

I've sat and watched his videos and said ALL those things you've said here - those walls are sooooo thin, the trim on those foot bowls are so much more complicated than they look at first glance, how the HECK does he throw such thin spouts (and don't get me started on the dip pens). You're a champ for experimenting and learning and sharing that vulnerable process with us all!

I too am a long time Florian fan. I love that you did this experiment. I really love that you were so impressed with your bowls after trimming. This goes to show that if you want a thin pot, throwing thin isn't the only way and sometimes not the best way to get there. I have just purchased Sumi von Dassow's book called In the Potter's Kitchen. It's a magnificent read that has all functional pottery, from microwave popcorn popper to fermenting pots, some tutorial info, inspiration and recipes. I'd love to do a Julie/Julia thing where I make my way through the book making the pots and making the recipes. If you have not heard of this potter, she's definitely one to look up. She has many articles and several books and videos. If you have not read Florian's book, it's well worth a read as well.

I learned pottery from college classes and from spending every spare minute in the studio around classes that I was able to for a couple semesters because I soooo loved it.....but that was 20 years ago. 😂 I never thought that I would be able to afford the equipment to throw at home as the kids' pottery wheels back then simply didn't work, but I couldn't stand to part ways with my tools.....just in case. About 6 months ago I stumbled on your review on one of the new Vevor beginner wheels....and it worked!! I was so excited and asked my husband to buy me one for my birthday last month!! I am now re-teaching myself. After 20 years of not throwing, it's coming along! 💗 I'm mostly at the stage of practice throwing....practice trimming …....throw in reclaim bucket. Practice throwing....practice trimming …....throw in reclaim bucket. 😂 😂 But who showed me that a working budget wheel exists now and inspired me to get back into it?? YOU, Mia! Everyone looks up to someone and that person inspires them.... Technically trained or self taught really doesn't matter.... It's more of an art style and/or a teaching style that resonates with a person that inspires them. You are that person for me. YOU inspire me! 💗 I really enjoy watching you create, especially on the wheel, and have learned so much from you!! Thank you for sharing your honest and humble artwork with the world!! 💗

I was extremely impressed with how cool they look at the end. You oversell your failure to much... ;) And Florian is a true master. and a kind soul.

Great job! Pushing outside of our comfort zones (in life and pottery) are super hard. Seeing you push yourself has inspired me to push my own making.

Stop right now, you are a really good Potter, I love your videos. I do watch Florian too, his videos are amazing but as you correctly said he's had a traditional start as an apprentice Potter and Learnt from the best, you are self taught, that's amazing too. He is a perfectionist in his way of throwing and glazing. Your makes come from the heart, you put your sole into each piece, this video shows what talent you have, as you say you have set yourself up trying to match his work, he does it daily, you watch from afar his work as do alot of us, but your doing it, you pulled handles off pots😮 the bowls foot, feet, were beautiful and the teapot, you have to agree, you did it. I hope he watches this, he will see what an impression he has on you and your work in this video is just Wow, I'll say it again, Wow. GREAT VIDEO🎉😊❤

I mean...ambitious, but really well done! And Florian himself approved, so bonus. Your pottery is great, but I love how you nailed that cinematic video style. Beautiful videography, and very engaging all the way through.

i have to say.. this video alone has set in stone that my goal to be a potter needs to happen by this year (ive been so busy moving and doing contract SWE work) that i really wanna find place to move w/ my partner and tackle ceramics. your process here reminded me what i loved so much about printmaking in the studios when developing an image and learning how to layer inks with equipment. i love the challenges art makes us think about and your journey through this makes me miss that aspect of the creative process. theres so much to learn!
