The brakes are adjustable. There is a small disc on the side of your transmission. There is a nut in the middle of the brake caliper on the small disc. Turn this in cw 1 turn and try it.
Its hard to say if there is something internally wrong without a running engine attached to it. It should not move that easily. The transmission can be damaged if someone towed it for an extended period with the lever IN. Since you engine is out of comm I would hook a socket and drill to the top of the pulley on the transmission and run it to see if the wheels move.
A filter change will only help if it is very clogged. In that case would probably wouldn't move at all or very very slow. You can view Peerless/Tecumseh parts breakdowns online. What are your Peerless numbers?
I had to diagnose a weak drive in a skid steer. Same setup as in a mower. Finding nothing really wrong, the factory sent out a technician. He also found nothing. Since this was a brand new unit, they sent a replacement, and it worked fine. The original was sent back to the factory. A few weeks later, I was informed, someone installed a set of pump Pistons in the motor side. The only difference was the bleed holes on the slippers are different by .010 of an inch.
Sorry about that. I think it is a youtube thing as I have had 2 or 3 other people comment on other random videos but never this one. Make sure not only that the audio on your computer is up but the little volume control button in the lower left of the video is all the way up. Thanks for watching.
Your pump should be the 917-3016 (717-3016). If you Google it you can find part breakdowns. I am not sure if the share the same oil or if they are completely separate.
It's a good idea to place a small powerful magnet in the base of the transaxle case to attract any metal fragments that can cause wear to the moving parts. Helps the gears, bearings & everything else last longer.
great vids, i have a cub i restored, i changed the fluid and belts, but i only get one speed out of it.... after watching your vids im wondering if it isnt my pump. im not sure as the tractor was not running moving when i got it
nice work buddy :) i think my problem is a worn collar , people sent me a dealer service memo about the collar problem. and the symptoms are identical to what im experiencing , part was only ten bucks . hopefully it will fix the problem .
hello I own a stige rider villa hst 8-11E. I want to change the oil in the hydrostat drive because it is already old, I can't find the oil drain plug, what should I do, I need your advice. The drive works ok. which oil do you recommend? thanks for your reply, our stigma masters don't know that. They say that the oil does NOT change ??? lp. joze slovenija
The flow of the pump controls the speed. The pump is controlled by a swash plate that is controlled by a lever mounted externally to your hand or foot speed control. The first thing I would suspect is a possible linkage problem. I did watch a few of your videos on the flooded Cub. Did water/mud come out when you drained the fluid?
Great video. I have to replace a fan and pulley on a Hydro Gear ZT-3400. Looks like you made quick work of getting yours off, but I can't figure out how to keep the fan/pulley assembly from turning when using a ratchet. Does the impact wrench make it easier?
Hey I have a murrey hydrostatic rider. It won't start unless I jump it with my boat battery. I bought a new battery for the mower and does the same thing. I have replaced the key swith and the seloined, get the same thing. I set the boat battyery beside the starter, hook the pos. to the pos. wire that goes to the starter. Then nagitive to battery, then touch it to the outside of starter and it starts? THANKS
You didn't say whether or not it was turning over, or if the solenoid was clicking. If it is not even trying to turn over, you probably have a bad safety switch somewhere. A quick check is attach a small jumper to the pos on the battery, then touch it to the small wire on the solenoid. If it turns over then, you either have a bad safety or a broken wire somewhere. Running the jumper, bypasses the ignition switch, safeties, and wiring. All the solenoid is looking for us a signal to activate it. Good luck.
Hi there,I have a Murray Ultra wide body 20hp twin and the hydrostat was getting lazy.So it got parked as I have 2 other mower's.I'm wondering if you know anything about the rear end in theses rider's.It look's like it's a totally sealed unit.Any way to fix these or should I just part out the mower.I'd hate to get ride of it cause the motor ran so smooth and cut really nice as well.I'm very mecanicly inclind so I'm not afraid to dig into it but if it's not worth it than would rather not.
Kurt Martin The pump or hydro motor in these is about all that wears out. Pull the transmission model number and see if you can find these parts. If so, I would rebuild it.
If you decide not to do anything with it, save the motor as you can use it on any other riding mower. You can even find someone with the opposite problem as you with a blown motor and good transmission and do a swap to make one good machine.
I have a Cub Cadet mower, same transmission though. It leaks a bit of fluid through the bottom and right rear wheel. Not too badly actually, maybe a 1/4 cup every couple weeks. Went into garage this morning (after mowing 4 days ago) and a puddle of fluid was under the right rear wheel. Any thoughts?
I have a Murray tractor with a hydro trans-axle, for some reason it is stuck in neutral all the time, i had done all tried all I know to get it in gear, the free wheel lever works, the brake rod works, the foot pedal works, all have been lubricated and move freely do you have a idea of something else I can try. Your video's are great and I have enjoyed watching them very much, Any easy to follow. Thanks George
+George Edwards More than likely the internal pin that puts it into free wheel is sticking even though the lever is disengaged. Light taping with a hammer may free it up inside.
+sixtyfiveford I have a cub cadet 1020 that is stuck in gear and I have no idea which one because the shift stick has come off. can you help me at all?
the fluid i drained was clean, on top in the reservoir it was a bit gray and cloudy. i adjusted all the linkage to my transmission and lever, was just wondering it a filter change would help. i got the peerless numbers off my tranny but am unable to find any numbers on the pump to find a breakdown/parts list
+sixtyfiveford thoughts on converting a variable speed mtd transaxle to either a 5/7 speed manual or hydrostatic transmission? or should I just rebuild the variable speed? it started slipping and making frequent popping sounds, and eventually it was slipping so much (with the pop/clank noise) that I could barely make it up a slight grade. reverse is only slightly affected, but not immune. do you think that shaft is rusted, causing the hub to not freely slide? I can't think of what I could of stripped inside of it. there is only slight play in the axle itself. actually the play seems to be within spec, up/down, left/right & in/out. idk if I should dedicate my only day off per week to tearing into it. of course, craigslist has plenty of used transaxles but they are either hydros or manual, no variable
hello i got alot out of your videos thanks.i have a late model simplicity mower and when i put it in neutral and get off it it starts creeping foreward what can i do to fix it?
And is it possible to put a 2 speed fan so lets say your going up a hill a lot with a full grass collector on, the 2nd speed either mechanically, electronically, or physically shifted in to 2nd gear make the fan go faster to blow more so it can cool the transmission down, is it possible?
Your video was helpful in rebuilding a hydro gear transaxle in my older Husqvarna LT130 Model # 310-0650 (319-0650). How much oil and what kind of oil should I use? Thanks
hi, i just got a brand new mtd lawn tractor with hydrostatic drive, it works great, however the transmission makes a slight whining noise, is this normal for a new hydro? thankyou!, keep up the good work.
Excellent, clear, free of music distractions, understandable, easy paced videos on your transmission repair. This level of repair is beyond me presently, and I don't know if that is my problem. I have a Craftsman 18.5 hp, OHV, DYT, Intek Plus, auto transmission riding lawnmower. I am NOT able to manually push it. I don't know yet if the mower actually runs. I can't push it out of my trailer because it will not roll. I put it in the neutral position and disengage the lever for the transmission disengagement, but it will NOT roll. When I jack up the rear wheels, the wheels will spin freely - in opposite directions. Do you have any suggestions or possible ideas of what is wrong? Thanks John R.

knightrider1545 A lot. Most will easily handle the 20-25hp motors they put into riding mowers these days. The just slip internally more which is the nature of a hydrostatic.
36hp is maxing it out, but it'll handle it. You'll be close to the edge but like anything with an engine just don't "slam" it and it will handle it without breaking. The biggest performance gain you will see is cutting grass. It may be rough on belts but it'll cut without an issue.
Ok. Will tell him but he is insisting he needs to replace switch interlock no 725.04039. He has tested all switches. What does the above part do for the tractor.
Barbara Votaw This tractor is equipped with a safety interlock system for the protection of the operator. • The safety interlock system prevents the engine from cranking or starting unless the parking brake is engaged, and the PTO (Blade Engage) knob (or lever) is in the disengaged (OFF) position. • The engine will automatically shut off if the operator leaves the seat before engaging the parking brake. • The electric PTO (Blade Engage) clutch will automatically shut off if the operator leaves the tractor’s seat with the PTO (Blade Engage) knob in the engaged (ON) position, regardless of whether the parking brake is engaged. • With the ignition key in the NORMAL MOWING position, the electric PTO (Blade Engage) clutch will automatically shut off if the PTO (Blade Engage) knob is moved into the engaged (ON) position with the drive pedal in position for Reverse travel.
my husband has one I wanted to kno the cost, but his sounds smooth and it starts first try. I'm sorry but urs sounds like u have a muffler leak? I listen to All the mowers and riders he works on and I've gotten a pretty good ear to the sounds of the engines and mufflers on just about all of them (after 24, yrs.). bob Also has a Hydro 165?, John Deere, and Ariens, 10 Horsem All working Ex. in case You guys need Help
My dad is trying to repair a Cub Cadet LT 1046. Specifically he needs to know how to reach the interlock system 725-04039 to check and/or replace. The motor keeps shutting off. Any help will be appreciated.
Barbara Votaw All of the safety switches are tied to the seat. They want to make sure you're on the seat while the blade is engaged. Lift the seat and make sure the switch is in good condition.
i have a question on a v twin 19hp briggs, i started it up and in 5 minutes it was really getting hot to the point where i had to shut her down, i took out the spark plugs and noticed one got really hot ,like as if you put a torch on it , the other was fine. What should i check for to get my lawntractor to cool down. i thought i would ask you because you know how to fix anything and if you can't , ITS DONE! LOL!!
Generally these engines only overheat because debris are blocking the air cooling fins. More than likely with a riding mower a mouse built a nest on that cylinder.
thats what it is doing, just goes very slow, an dies on an incline. i found a breakdown on the axle part just nothing for the pump. cant find any numbers on it. but i have a peerless 1312 serial 30065402
when I rebuilt one I went to local lawn n tractor store and they sold me this clay based grease I refilled mine with.. came looking for name as no longer near that shop.
Why don’t you just loosen and remove two battery bolts, lift the battery out of the tray, then you’ve got access to fool with these damn things. I just removed my MURRAY transaxle entirely, much easier to drain the oil if it is removed from the frame...
My craftsman hydro works fine after 20 years of use, but after watching this I still want to rebuild it. Great video!
Thanks. Most hydros are exactly like this one just layed out a little different. I wish you the best with your snapper.
thank you so much for taking the time to make and upload this video. I am trying to fix my own hydro gear at the moment.
I'm glad it was helpful. Good luck on yours.
Sounds Great. I hope to see a video on it. Always great to see videos from you. Talk to you soon.
The brakes are adjustable. There is a small disc on the side of your transmission. There is a nut in the middle of the brake caliper on the small disc. Turn this in cw 1 turn and try it.
This one runs 20w50 motor oil but many call for different fluid. The transaxle on this one is connected, using the same fluid and most due.
You're a natural teacher - thanks for the great videos
David Urquhart Thanks for watching and the compliment.

man that thing looks brand new dont think its ever seen a new york winter haha
very helpful, thank you for sharing this. Took the mystery out of my current repair job
They differ by manufacturer. Some use ATF some Gear oil some Motor oil. This one calls for sae 20w 50 motor oil.
Different types call for different oils. This one calls for 20w-50 motor oil.
Glad you liked it.
Thanks for posting this video it helped me out a lot
I not sure without Googleing it which type yours uses. Mine used 10w 40 engine oil but I know a lot use transmission fluid.
No. A pulley swap would be your best bet. I wouldn't mess with the blade speed as they are set at max safe speed by the mfg.
Your pump should be the 917-3016 (717-3016). If you Google it you can find part breakdowns. I am not sure if the share the same oil or if they are completely separate.
I would check your ground wire connection or bad cables. Use a set of car jumper cables to test them.
I've got a zt2800 that the oil filter stud is stripped out bad. It can't be rethreaded. What would have to be done to replace the oil filter stud?
It's a good idea to place a small powerful magnet in the base of the transaxle case to attract any metal fragments that can cause wear to the moving parts. Helps the gears, bearings & everything else last longer.

Whinny is generally a transmission that has air in the system.

The variable speed is a great transmission. Most of the time the variable clutch is just sticking and needs a little clean up.
thanks for your input, I'll let you know how the rebuild goes
Yes I know.
hello i got alot out of your videos thanks.i have a late model simplicity mower and when i put it in neutral and get off it it starts creeping foreward what can i do to fix it?
It just needs the linkage adjusted.
sixtyfiveford hguy
And is it possible to put a 2 speed fan so lets say your going up a hill a lot with a full grass collector on, the 2nd speed either mechanically, electronically, or physically shifted in to 2nd gear make the fan go faster to blow more so it can cool the transmission down, is it possible?
Good job I hope it works out well you did it like a pro.
what was the first obvious symptom of having to rebuilt the pump itself.
thanks for the video
Pump whining and having to push the movement lever further than normal to go the same speed.
Your video was helpful in rebuilding a hydro gear transaxle in my older Husqvarna LT130 Model # 310-0650 (319-0650). How much oil and what kind of oil should I use? Thanks
can this trans tow a 1500lb trailer on flat ground for around 3 miles?
L DJ Yes. But jerking from hitting curbs/bumps can cause excessive spikes of load and hurt it.
hi, i just got a brand new mtd lawn tractor with hydrostatic drive, it works great, however the transmission makes a slight whining noise, is this normal for a new hydro? thankyou!, keep up the good work.
oh and also just to add, i did purge the system to make sure there was no air in it.
A whining is small air bubbles that are trapped. They will work themselves out over time and you shouldn't worry about it.
+sixtyfiveford thankyou!, keep up the good work
Thomas king
Is it possible to replace oil with water in a hydro transmission?
No
Hahahaha
Thanks. You're very kind.
My hydrostat is also slipping. What type of oil do they use?
Excellent, clear, free of music distractions, understandable, easy paced videos on your transmission repair. This level of repair is beyond me presently, and I don't know if that is my problem.

It's hard to say. A lot of hydro don't push easily even with the disengage lever actuated.
I have a HG 0610. I wonder if it is the same or similar as I'd like to do an oil change on it too someday. I'm just not sure where to get a gasket kit for it. I'm in Australia and parts are difficult to locate and if you do find them, they are damn expensive. Buying from the U.S always incurs extortionate shipping rates. I don't understand how a $5 part costs $40 to ship. Bloody Crooks !
All of these Hydrostatic transmissions are very similar in layout and identical in function. Some have a drain plug.
Where did you buy your parts for the hydrostatic transmission?
Amazon actually had the part I needed and they were the cheapest. I just found the part number I needed and then Googled it for 30 minutes.
Can you remember the vendor on Amazon? Another subject....I want to know how to find an explosion chart of a John Deere 130 hydro gear trans axle. We have googled and unable to find one. Thanks. Leamon
I just looked it up; it was Mowtownusa . They also have a website but there prices aren't the best. I would find your part number and Google it. Do you have the L130 or the older 130? Your transmission itself should have a model number on it.
Great quality video, understandable, and clear, thanks.
Thanks.
@Smallgasengine1 Vent Tube.
Any idea how to change just the left axle seal a d where to get seal at
2185 cc looks different than one in video
The transaxle brand and model will be on a tag on the transaxle itself. From there you can find a parts breakdown online and part numbers.
What is the price of a new transaxle? Thanks.
Anywhere from a few hundred to a grand.
How do you change the fluid or top it up?
I'm glad it works great I hope it lasts great job.
what makes it like gears on a lt2000
Rephrase your question.
What type of oil did you use for your hydrostatic transmission?
I have a 314-0510 hydro gear in my LT2000 craftsman mower. Can I use my mityvac fluid extractor just to change fluid in my hydro? I dont believe in that lifetime fluid bullshit.
How do you remove a drive spindle from a hydro transmission?
You need to pull the entire transmission apart to separate the drive spindle.
sixtyfiveford do you have any video or other information on how to do this?
sixtyfiveford pulled the trans got it open up drained the oil. Need info were to get parts and the trans diagram. Need how to replace the drive spindle.
Google your hydro trans model number and you should be able to find a schematic.
mine will not go in neutral what can i do to fix this problem thank you
Check your linkage, as it may be binding.
How much hp can hydrostatic take?
knightrider1545 A lot.
It may be rough on belts but it'll cut without an issue.
can you get any extra m.p.h. while your at it? and extra blade spin speed :) ?
Ok. Will tell him but he is insisting he needs to replace switch interlock no 725.04039. He has tested all switches. What does the above part do for the tractor.
Barbara Votaw
This tractor is equipped with a safety interlock system
for the protection of the operator.
• The safety interlock system prevents the engine
from cranking or starting unless the parking brake is
engaged, and the PTO (Blade Engage) knob (or
lever) is in the disengaged (OFF) position.
• The engine will automatically shut off if the operator
leaves the seat before engaging the parking brake.
• The electric PTO (Blade Engage) clutch will
automatically shut off if the operator leaves the
tractor’s seat with the PTO (Blade Engage) knob in
the engaged (ON) position, regardless of whether
the parking brake is engaged.
• With the ignition key in the NORMAL MOWING
position, the electric PTO (Blade Engage) clutch
will automatically shut off if the PTO (Blade
Engage) knob is moved into the engaged (ON)
position with the drive pedal in position for Reverse
travel.
Thank you. My dad wanted specific instructions. Will give to him.
Are they all the same on tractor
All of these work the same way.

great vid man. you have lots of skill!
How do you “reinstall” new fluid???
There is generally a plug on the top or a side. You can see at 4:19 the hole in the top I'm draining the oil out of.
thanks for your comment
My dad is trying to repair a Cub Cadet LT 1046. Specifically he needs to know how to reach the interlock system 725-04039 to check and/or replace. The motor keeps shutting off. Any help will be appreciated.
Barbara Votaw All of the safety switches are tied to the seat. They want to make sure you're on the seat while the blade is engaged. Lift the seat and make sure the switch is in good condition.

Generally these engines only overheat because debris are blocking the air cooling fins. More than likely with a riding mower a mouse built a nest on that cylinder.
Work liquid-atf ?
I didn't think I was. :)
thats what it is doing, just goes very slow, an dies on an incline. i found a breakdown on the axle part just nothing for the pump. cant find any numbers on it. but i have a peerless 1312 serial 30065402

Excellent videos! I have learned a lot. So, when can I ship mine to you and how much would you charge lol? Thanks dude
Thanks. I'll look for in the mail.
Great Video! (as always)
Hey, What weight oil did you use? Do you use a different types of fluid for the pump and transaxle?
They are separate, right?
when I rebuilt one I went to local lawn n tractor store and they sold me this clay based grease I refilled mine with.. came looking for name as no longer near that shop.
mine was different though, sort of a pancake design.
awesome vid !
I hear some of the B&S 24hp motors like to throw rods.
I don't think anymore than other engines. Generally the motors that throw a rod, due so because of lack of maintenance.
I hate working under the the battery - Look, then reach in and feel for it. Repeat, ad nauseum.
Why don’t you just loosen and remove two battery bolts, lift the battery out of the tray, then you’ve got access to fool with these damn things. I just removed my MURRAY transaxle entirely, much easier to drain the oil if it is removed from the frame...
That pallet is going to show u the problem lol bonk
poor audio can hardly hear what you say at the start of the video
Hydrostatic Is nothing but junk! They were better off with shifting tractors but i guess people got lazy!
What? 😂😂 mine is 51 years old, in a lawn or garden tractor you really dont shift anyway.
@@thatmarred_mustang yes the ones with a cluch and brake were the best!
@@dodgeramsport01 I must be confused about something, I guess the brake and the clutch are the same thing on my tractor.
@@thatmarred_mustang yes they are the same pedal, but the new ones have a gas pedal no gear or speed select! these are the hydrostatic ones!
@@dodgeramsport01 oh, ok! I understand now, thank you for clarifying!!!! I appreciate it !!!
the actual garden tractors are way better and the one we have has a eaten tranny and thats the same kind that are in semi's but smaller
