Thank you so much for posting this! You are a life saver. I just screwed up my husband's man chair (electric recliner) when I moved it I didn't notice the cord was under it and the mechanism chewed up the cord. 30 minutes later (20 mins of panic and 10 minutes of actual video watching/repair) the chair is working again. Best part is he will never know
Thank you for your video. In all my years of yard work had never cut through a cord until yesterday..and it was a brand new cord to boot. Watched your video and bought the part and made the repair with a new female end. I usually give all my cord repair work (irons, lamps) to my father..the family electrician.. but due to distance and the amount of leaves falling..i needed to get the cord repaired fast. Cost of repair $6.29..your video:priceless! thanks!
Thank you so much for your tutorial! A mouse chewed part of my refrigerator cord. Called the appliance repair place and they said the part I need was $100 + labor and was on back order with no estimated date in sight. Watched your video and $25 trip to Home Depot later, my fridge is up and working again. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Thanks Rich. I had to intentionally cut a cord that was 11 feet to a shorter length for a project I was working on. The application was for outdoors so instead of electrical tape I used Gardner Bender Black Liquid Electrical Tape. This is waterproof and doesn't deteriorate.
Just wanted to say thank you! I never comment on videos but that was so clear and well done. I'm a country girl who loves to fix things on my own so videos like your own have been extremely beneficial. Gracias, Amelia
Cool demo dude!!!! Before I saw your vid, I fixed a sauna machine cord and I thought I knew what I was doing... When I plugged it in, It freakin exploded like shit.... Then I watched your video and I found out that I connected the copper wires in the opposite sides, And I connected it really messy... So I give you a thumbs up, Hope you live forever and ever love you bro... You Saved My Life!!!!!! ITS SAUNA TIME!!!!!!!
Thanks for this!! Recently had a portion of my tv cord get melted. I'm not here to start an electrical fire, so I figured I should replace the damaged portion of the cord before using it. My dad isn't around so it was helpful to come online and find one of the first hits had a very simple explanation! Huzzah!
Amazing Video, never thought Id be able to fix this lamp that I love from my travels, but this video made it so remarkably easy. TH-cam is great for DIYers
@RichsMethods The vacuum is running just fine with the cord repaired thanks to your thorough instructions! Thanks for encouraging women to try something like this simple repair.
Great video my little electrical heater cord got damaged. No need to buy a whole new heater won't be cold this winter able to say home watch some good movies and be warm this holiday season. Happy Holidays everyone in the world!!
Thank you! A hanging picture directly above a plugged in cord fell down and broke a two prong plug to my big heavy lighted china cabinet. The thought of moving the heavy cabinet to replace the entire cord was something I did not look forward to. I bought a new color matching two prong extension cord at Target and used your video to replace the plug. It came out beautifully. Thank you so much.
On your two prong fix what I do is cut the marked wire a slightly different length than the unmarked wire, maybe an inch or less. This way when wrapping the connection there is less of a bulge and there also is more of the original insulation between the connections. I also twist the connections lengthwise and solder them. Makes a stronger connection and even less bulge.
Good clear explanation, nice smooths cuts (ie: the video) and efficient use of words (no annoying unnecessary repetition and tangents), and good delivery. Thanks for your video!
Glad I happened to buy the same style plug because until you pointed out green/white/brass differentiation I thought the screws were all the same color. Damn colorblindness! Thanks for the tutorial.
Thank you so much! My dog chewed my Orbitz Timer cord in half and you showed me exactly what to do! I was so afraid since it is electricity, but you made such a clean video of it I can trust my work!
I melted my 2 prong cord with my toaster oven and need to replace the plug part; not the cord part. Your video only showed me how to fix the cord part. Thank you!
Gosh, I wish you were my little brother or next door neighbor...grins...Seriously, thank you ever so kindly for taking the time to make this video...i'm a 60- year -old woman who is trying to get the courage to repair the wiring on an older lamp...Both of the wires came completely loose and were knocked off completely when the lamp accidentally was knocked onto the floor...It might be more costly though to buy the wire strippers than find a repairperson... Thanks so much for your time...
Thanks for the video. I just replaced 2 plugs for some cut cords on my Delta bench sander and bench top band saw. Appreciate it. Oh, and as another commented, the wire insulation should be around the hook, which is what I did.
Sorry to say this Richard, don't take it bad way, I know you have good intentions, and you know it is dangerous to play with electrical stuff , so here is my bit of advise, you must not strip the wire bare longer than what is needed to go under the screw, you expected that as you tighten the screw the wire will get pulled under the screw, but it didn't so what i suggest instead is to loosen the screw more so that the bare wire can go around the screw all the way, then tighten the screw, and you should not strip wire too long where they can cause danger by shorting between wires as you loop around the prongs, The loop around the prongs should not be bare wire at all, loop should be insulated and any bare conductors should only be under the screw and fully tight. If someone was to twist wire coming out of the plug, those long bare wires can touch each other and cause a massive bang and or even cause fire. No wires should be joined merely by twisting them together, as that is considered a poor quality joint and after a while the oxidation of bare wires can cause a poor joint , contact between two wires resistance increases, which under heavy load can cause heating and eventually fire risk. Finally, all wire conductors should be twisted thoroughly such that you do not get any loose strands any where, you should avoid having to cut any loose strands, they should not be there what so ever, if you do get a strand come lose , then take out the wire and redo the twisting until you get it perfect, all bare conductors under the screw and no lose strands to cut or their possibility of shorting with anything else.
Jayant Desai I hope this comment was read by the man who uploaded this video because this is very wise advice and should be taken into consideration best comment man
Jayant Desai I have one question about the 2 prong cord in the video that was slightly damaged. Would electrical tape wrapped around the damaged spot have been sufficient to deal with that issue?
Truly basic video. I am so grateful you made it so simple to understand. I wish you had shown it with an utility knife but regardless it is much appreciated!!
You helped me as I just cut the orange cord with the hedge trimmer and didnt know they sold that orange female part where I only cut off 2 feet from end .... I will look for female orange part today ...Thank you for your help
thank you so much....I melted the top of my Keurig plug on stovetop and panicked!!! I now own wire stripper and utility knife as well....had no idea how easy a repair can be!!
Awesome and thank you. My puppy chewed up my printer cord and vacuum. I am a single woman and glad when I can figure out how to fix a few things. It's so depressing to have to call for every repair. Cindy
on your white plug when you reconnect the wires you should be using a "wire-mans splice " where you twist the wire together by crossing them over and twisting in the opposite direction to make a stronger tie connection which and this keeps the wire about the same size creating a smaller bulge in the lines also you should solder the splice so that it cannot be pulled apart. thanks
thank you Rich, was getting the Xmas tree out and something chewed one of the light cords - on my way to Lowes to pick up the electrical tape, had no idea it came in colors. Thanks again.
This is a good video. First off those who are leaving negative comments...there is no hope for stupidity so with that being said, this is a quick fix video not by any means a permanent solution, but ALL hardware stores carry replacement parts for these kind of fixes. He does not claim to be professional, and he also cannot be held liable for someone's failures no matter if they "watch his video" or not. Keep posting videos and let the haters hate!
@1120A21 I'm a dental student so eventually I'll be a dentist. I also taught when I was in grad school (Teacher Assistant). So I got my dexterity from Dental School, and the I got my teaching ability from Grad School...ha. Thanks for watching!
i was given a 52" flatscreen tv (crt, nothin fancy) but it had been previously left on the street. and apparently someone liked the power cord more than the tv. so when i got it i was pissed off that it had no power cord. but thanks to this vid i know i have everything i need already. thanks boss.
it worked with no problem and hasn't even had a single issue. i was concerned cause it had only about 2 inches of cord to work with on the back but it worked perfectly. thanks again!
Joner ruh roh! If you’re original plug was melted, what makes you think a chintzy DIY half job won’t make your house burn down? Heaters draw a LOT of current.
For those asking how to tell the wires of a two-wire electrical cord apart if they're not marked beforehand... actually, they already are! (At least, in the U.S.) If you look very carefully at your cord under good lighting, you'll see that there's a difference in each "side" of the cord (or each wire). On one side, the plastic is completely smooth, while the other has tiny ribs that run the entire length of the cord. You can even see it in the closeups around 6:30 in the video... the ribbed wire is closest to the camera (the one that Rich marked), and casts tiny shadows. You can also feel the difference with your fingers, even if you can't make them out visually.
you have the basics. On the 3 wire, i would have cut them shorter, solder coated them and wrapped more of the conducter around the screws. On the 2 wire, they sell a plug that just snaps on. BTY, no need to mark the 2 wire. One side is ribbed, the other side is smooth. All in all, good vid.
thanks.. i have a broken piano's plug, and i thought i wouldn't fix it.. i thought that i'm just going to buy another one. thanks for the help! thanks for that video!
That happens pretty often. Inspect the plastic coating on the wire. There should either be an indentation or stripe going down one of them. That is the negative (the Silver wire).
I put a huge piece of shrink tubing to hopefully cover the whole patch but the tubing will not fit over both places where I taped it. Should I just re-wrap more tape around the two separate wraps to make it neater, or should I cut all that off and go with a direct plug similar to what you showed in the video? I did the patch work because I wanted to test the stereo receiver and now that it does work like new I should just go buy a new plug and put it on that way. Give feedback. Thanks.
You need to insert the cord into the connector until the insulation is caught under the hook. There should be no bare wire extending from the screw. These wires were stripped too long. Even a slight twist in his repair will cause a short and possibly a fire.
Robert Jackson Yes, this is a fire waiting to happen. The wires are stripped WAY too far! A single strand of copper between active and neutral in some cases may not be enough to trip a breaker resulting in a large amount of heat an a fire. There are far too many replies on here accepting this as good practice!
The guy has a nice manner and it's sweet of him to make the video BUT I cringed as I saw how the over bared wires were connected to the screw with even a 'whisker' hanging off. I had to actually stop watching because i was squirming with discomfort to see how hazardous it was. He also should explain and use terms such as 'insulation' and 'strain relief'.
Bruh u saved me. I was replacing the wire and normally I get the bigger one. It’s a lot different so I googled and found a vid and he skipped part putting the wires in. It looked like he did it the way this guy did. But he didn’t even do a close up. Cough Fort Knox co you’re an idiot cough cough. Then I found this an it’s still wrong. Thanks so much for the clarification. Fort Knox co who I watched earlier skipped putting the wires in and didn’t even give a close up. What I fucking idiot. I know how to strip wires. This video is a million times better even tho he did it wrong.
Today I watched this video and I can't believe I followed it and replaced my carpet shampooer power cord after my dog ate my wire within days of buying it. Im so happy it worked
Did you use a wire stripper especially made to strip stranded conductors? Apparently they are not the same as strippers for solid conductors and help prevent breaking individual strands of the stranded wire.
Awesome, thanks for this. This allowed me to fix my WiiU Gamepad Controller to get the kids back some Netflix while I cleaned haha! Much appreciated! *thumbs up for you!!*
I need to replace a wire similar to your white one, but plug in is missing/ripped off, so I can't mark bad and w a sharpie. Any suggestions for replacing w a different cord end/plug in
I have a aquarium canister filter with a 3 prong power cord that is broken cord. I bought a 3 prong male plug end What you did on your surge protector would that work the same way if I repair my filter
If you are experienced in safely soldering, that's great. But it should be noted that for people who are not experienced, it may be safer to go the route of this video!
I have a 2 prong chord that I'm looking to attach a three prong to, does it matter which chords go where? I know I won't have a ground chord but I only have the 3 prong
Hi, why didn't you use 'twist on wire connectors' before using electrical tape? is it necessary to use the caps? I want to rewire a 2 prong plug, the foot switch broke. What's the best advice you could give me? (I only know simple electrical work)
I'd replace the plug. You can buy a 2 prong plug at WalMart or any hardware store like TruValue. Is the original wire have any ribbing on it? If so the one that is ribbed would be your silver prong (wider prong). The straight wire would be the Hot wire placed on the brass fitting (smaller plug prong).
Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I don't know how much it would have cost to repair the cord to my lamp. It would have cost 40 bucks to replace the entire lamp. It took me less than 5 minutes to repair the cord myself, because of your instruction. Thank you for posting.
Is replacing a non-polar plug with a polar plug safe? The desk fan I'm using next to my PC right now was built during the 1950's and it was manufactured with a non-polar plug, but the plastic cover of the plug is loose and wobbly even though I still can plug in and turn the fan on.
Hey, I'm trying to replace a cord end for a shop light in my garage however the only wire that is identifiable is the green ground.. Would I still follow your standard with the Right prong being the White and the Left being black? Thanks
I've been looking everywhere to no avail. I have a bunch of mini holiday lights and I can't connect them together with extension cords because the plug of the extension cords do not fit into the holiday lights. What can I do about this? How do I grind the part of the plug that won't fit

Hello Rich, This How To video is good and you have shown clearly with instructions about fixing a broken electrical cord. Thanks
Great video! I just replaced my 3 prong plug on a sapce heater. Couldn't have done it without your help. You are truly awesome!
Thank you for this! I replaced my vacuum plug all by myself!
The first one you fixed was exactly the one I was trying to figure out. Thanks again for your help.
Thank you so much! My dog chewed my Orbitz Timer cord in half and you showed me exactly what to do! I was so afraid since it is electricity, but you made such a clean video of it I can trust my work!
Word, thanks for posting. It really is just that easy, and now my rice cooker is back in action!
Nice, glad to help!
because of your video, I'm a hero, I've saved the day and $$. thank you
I melted my 2 prong cord with my toaster oven and need to replace the plug part; not the cord part. Your video only showed me how to fix the cord part.
Thank you!
Thank you! this is so great. the vacuum store told me they would have to replace the entire cord,,,, $200 with labor.
You're welcome. It's always nice to save money!
This is stuff they will never teach you in school. Thanks you saved me $200 cuz I accidentally cut my wire for my circle saw. It works like new now 😃.
The estimate from the vacuum cleaner place was $80 to replace the cord. Thanks dude!

This is the only one video that helps me out , thanks man
Thanks man! This is something everyone should know how to do.
You're welcome!
Thanks for fixing my lamp Rich! Great job making the video.. but I think I'll just have you fix it for me if it happens again :-P
Appreciate the re-affirmation of placement of white, black and green wire. I now have the 40 ft electrical cable working.
Exactly, what I needed. I could not remember which color wire goes on the different color screws. Thank you.
Jesse
Great video you helped me fix my 50 inch flat screen tv!!!!
Just fixed a hairdryer that would have cost me a fortune to replace. Thanks so much for posting!
Aye man thanks a lot! Just fixed my refrigerator thanks to your vid
Thank you very much! You just showed me how to fix my own cord/wire for my fan. 2 prong extension cord.
Thanks. My vacuum sucked up its own cord and chewed it up so I had to replace it. The plug I bought had no instructions. Your video really helped
That's awesome. I'm glad to help out!
You helped me as I just cut the orange cord with the hedge trimmer and didnt know they sold that orange female part where I only cut off 2 feet from end .... I will look for female orange part today ...Thank you for your help
Thanks Rick. Mission accomplished.
Congrats!
This is actually what I needed, thank you
very nice, i was looking for a vid on how to SHORTEN and extension cord and this video was as close as i could get to that....
You rock! My rabbits have a nasty habit of biting through all of my chargers and now it won't cost me anything to repair the cords. Thanks. :-)
Saved me hundreds of dollars! Thanks!
Nice. Glad to help out!
Excellent video and it worked great for me. had to do it to a hedge trimmer cord that, well, yeah. Got caught in the blades while trimming. Thanks!
Your video solved my broken wiring issue. thanks

Thank you very much. It's very useful video. God Bless you.
Thanks a lot. Does this method produce local heat in the broken area ? Is it safe when we connect a broken iron wire ?
I couldn't live without mine!
Hi like the video. My 2 prong needs replacing. Would I replace as u did the 3 prong cut and connect under nails? Haven't purchased yet?
No way. I'm glad you were able to figure out what's wrong. Thanks for the comment!

I have a white cord like yous ( seen at 506 ) but I need to put a new plug on it, Which wires go on each side ( Brass or silver screws ? )

I've been looking everywhere to no avail. I have a bunch of mini holiday lights and I can't connect them together with extension cords because the plug of the extension cords do not fit into the holiday lights. What can I do about this? How do I grind the part of the plug that won't fit
