It depends on the rise of your trousers. But for a rule of thumb, make sure the tension is not too tight that the trousers are giving you a wedgy. The best thing to do is to have you trousers tailored and adjust the height of the braces to your desired height and tension. You want the fit to feel as though the braces aren't there. If they're constantly slipping off your shoulders, the tension is too loose. Also, there are many lengths to braces, as with ties. There's a misconception that braces are one size fits all. I for example, bought a pair of braces that were too long for me, and had to lift the adjusters PAST my shoulders because they were too long.
