- [ TURN ON CC FOR ENG SUBS ] This is a fan video for the Chinese period drama, Empresses in the Palace (甄嬛传 Legend of Zhen Huan). It follows the journey of Zhen Huan, a consort who fights against all odds to become the Empress Dowager. The story is truly epic and gut-wrenching. This drama has over 70 episodes so of course I wasn't able to include everything, but I tried my best. I think I could've included more Hua Fei footage, etc., but I had time limitations.
RUYI VS. EMPRESSES IN THE PALACE
Zhen Huan in Empresses in the Palace is NOT the same character as the Empress Dowager in Ruyi's Royal Love. They are loosely based on the same historical figure, but the two characters and stories are FICTIONAL and separate. There are two different canons for Empresses in the Palace and Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace.
Examples of differences in Empresses in the Palace:
- Zhen Huan did not force Ulanara Yixiu to die by poison. She did not threaten Ulanara's niece with poison either.
- Zhen Huan did not harbor a grudge against Ulanara's niece.
- The Qianlong Emperor ascended the throne with only one Empress and one consort.
- Zhen Huan became Empress Dowager at a much younger age than the Empress Dowager in Ruyi's Royal Love.
- The same actress for Zhen Huan, Sun Li, continues to portray her in her elderly years in the abridged version of Empresses in the Palace. This continues the canon of Empresses in the Palace. However, in Ruyi's Royal Love, a totally different actress appears as the Empress Dowager.
SUBTITLES
Some of the translations are my own and may be paraphrased for context. Other translations are based on existing subtitles from the Magpie Bridge Brigade, some of which I edited and localized for my video. There may be a few errors.
Lots of spoilers are included. Most of the events are chronological but some are out of order.

Jinxi's advice is one of the most memorable lines in dramaland, imo. "Do not be heartless, because then you'll still have a heart. You must _hate,_ having _nothing_ in your heart." Ugh, the chills!
Zhen Huan still had a heart in the end. 😭

of course. you cannot be under dressed or the other girls will look down at you. the dresses and headdress show power/ position, hence it changes every time she go up a rank.
"Intimidating" YESSSS this is the absolutely correct word! Now this word can describe what I felt when I watched she entered the palace with that look and stare.
Her make up, too. From simple just barely there to the highly stylized mask at the end, as if recording how Her face and character change as she rises in rank.
I watched Ruyi first and then someone told me the terrifying but awesome empress dowager from that show is based on Zhen Huan and I HAD to check it out. What a story. She outlived EVERYBODY.

She did not become ruthless, she just learned to defend herself
I believe Zhen Huan became pretty ruthless by the end towards her enemies. However, she didn't totally lose her merciful nature.

They adjusted her in the show to make her more 'defensive' and likable. In the book she's more ruthless. But there are still little clues in the show that tell you Zhenhuan isn't a simple nice little girl either, though she is by no means a cruel person.

When she killed Linrongs baby, that was very cruel, she shows even no sympathy to a child...very sad...

It isn't that these ladies started out bad, they became that way because of the cruel system they were forced to endure. It was eat or be eaten.

@@fizzul15 The Royal harem system forced actions based on events that happened after the Emperor died. Only the Queen mother or dowager continued to enjoy high status. Those women who bore children were allowed to stay in the forbidden city at a communal palace while the concubines without were forced to a convent where they became nuns. Only the Queen mother or dowager Queen benefitted so this why it is a forced. This same type of system was present in most of the better off Chinese families where being the main wife was so important.
Rubbish, Zhen Huan never turned ruthless. In fact, at the very end, she still had many allies, including fellow consorts and eunuchs to help her. She was pragmatic and decisive once she returned from the monastery/nunnery and she would gladly retaliate against anyone who tried to harm her. But she would not attack without reason. She did not turn into a villain but became a worthy opponent against the Queen and her cronies.
Zhen Huan wasn't ever ruthless...Palace full of hater, schemer, jealousy, and murderer.. Emperor and Empress worst of their kind.. Zhen Huan learn from the best, got learn how to survive

I really like stories like Yangxi Palace Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace and Empress in the Palace cause there's no questions of ethics and love will save the day kind of stuff......it's cold harsh reality and I harem politics
Each women in these harems are capable of running a country with their wits
This drama is like Harry Potter to me, I mean I keep re-watching the show yearly without getting bored. The way Zhen Huan changed to defend herself that got me chilled every time.
I rewatch it often too! It's a timeless drama!
I run a major post production outfit, and this is one of the most talented offline edit I've seen of this show. Putting together the highlights in a way that tells the story slightly differently and very provocatively. Very good job.

Hands down the best tv drama to come out of Chinese television. Superb acting, great costumes and locations.

Sigh. So depress. It's the same in other world's palace court. 'If you don't kill, they'll kill you' kind of survival political game. Once you enter into the palace, you've enter the chessboard. Any good person will learn to become cruel and ruthless just to defense themselves. From innocent to become avenger.
I remember watching Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace and could only wish I knew more of Dowager Empress’s story. And when I found this, I understood. I’m still on the fence about her, but love her nonetheless.

@@empresseseternelles its the same author and the same franchise, ruyi is a sequel to zhenhuan. thats why ruyi had so much hype even before the show dropped, everyone who loved zhenhuan was excited for it. the differences in the story is due to new censorship rules in 2017 -- ruyi had to change their plot to "fit with historical facts". qianlong and qingying, in the novel, married out of convenience and fell in love after marrying, and became each other's first love. that was so much more interesting but due to runtime issues, the sequel just used "they were childhood friends" because it was simpler.
@@lucyfiniarel2347 I understand about the novels. However, the glaring differences between the two dramas make it pretty clear that the drama version of Ruyi Zhuan is separate from the drama version of Zhen Huan Zhuan.
@@empresseseternellesim just saying tho, chinese fandom of zhz pretty much considers ruyi and zh a prequel - sequel show, they always discuss it together and treat it as part of the same canon. and the reason is because there's been an uncountable number of rpf written about yong zheng and qianlong's harem, and when u check what's really recorded in history, stuff like zh's age, name, whole origin story, personality, biological relationship with qianlong and the literal existence of persons are completely different. compared to other stories, zhz and ryz practically exist in the same canonic universe. so these are actually really small inconsistencies - which are seen as necessary to fit in with new censorship rules. though you're right the stories have a ton of continuity issues, it makes sense to interpret the two as separate stories as well, i'm just providing the background context for the op wondering.

The only way to survive the harem. Watch royal feast the scene where the late emperors concubine left to be buried alive is horrifying
I agree. You have to kill certain parts of yourself just to survive and that's terrifying. Also, I think that Royal Feast is set during the Ming Dynasty, so the burial of the emperor's concubines was common. Wu JInyan's character was an empress and was treated in the same fashion.
Ming is more cruel if we talk about treating women in Chinese history

@@umeyama44This story and Ruyi's story are adaptations of the novels of the same author. The main character Zhen Huan and the mother of Hongli(the emperor in Ruyi's love) are based on the real Empress Xiaoshengxian. One could say Zhen Huan is technically the mother in law of Ruyi, but both dramas have many differences making the mc here and the empress dowager of Ruyi rather different.
