  • [TURN ON CC FOR ENG SUBS] This is a fan video for the Chinese drama Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace (如懿传 Ruyi Zhuan). The theme of this video is mercy, peace, justice, and truth. It mainly focuses on Ruyi's reign as Empress, but also includes some clips from her time as consort.
This video was INCREDIBLY difficult to make due to the fast pace of the song and the sheer amount of clips and characters. 💀💀💀Of course, many moments and characters were left out because I could not cram 87 episodes into one song.
    "MERCY, PEACE, AND JUSTICE"
The refrain embodies Ruyi's core values. Rather than focusing solely on Ruyi's love story, I tried to show her compassionate and merciful nature. I also emphasized Ruyi's commitment to TRUTH. Ruyi revealed the truth to many of her enemies. The truth was both cruel yet also freeing. Was telling them the truth revenge, justice, or mercy? Maybe a little bit of all.
    "DUTY CALLS"
Ruyi had an obligation to her duty as Empress, resulting in a conflict between her values, love, and duty.
"SAY WE CHOOSE, BUT IT'S NO CHOICE AT ALL"
Relates to the conflict between Ruyi's free will and her obligation towards her clan, husband, mother-in-law, harem, and empire.
    "CHERISH AND PROTECT US"
Ruyi cherished her loved ones...her friends, allies, and soulmate. The line "protect us" is somewhat ironic as in the end, many died and the Emperor also failed to protect Ruyi.
"BATTLE BORN THEY SEND US / COVERED IN OUR NOBLE BLOOD" Daughters were sent into the harem as though they were being sent into battle. Many were sacrificed as chess pieces despite their "noble blood".
Some of the translations are my own and may be paraphrased for context. Other translations are based on existing subtitles, some of which I edited and localized for my video. There may be a few errors. The translation for Ruyi's line about flowers blooming and falling is my own. I believe this interpretation captures the timeless and profound message of her words.

She refused to be crown as Empress, her love for Qianlong is not for status, glory of her clan or wealth. She only wants to accompanied the Emperor, holding hands and his heart together sincerely.
The Empress position is like a burning cloak. Whether it will burn the owner (like the Empress Fuca) or others who tried to fight for it (like Jin Yuyan and Yanwan)
So Ruyi set herself free, not more want to stay in the inferno of chaos, unstable and endless fighting in Qianglong harem...

Truly the best cdrama I've ever watched. but also the most heart wrenching. I find it's easier to rewatch other cdramas over again. I also find it interesting the polar opposite stories between this one and Yanxi Palace. I love them both.

Yes, I also find it hard to rewatch this drama in full because of how dark and sad the story is...so many traumatic things happened to Ruyi... 😭

250 years later, the series 如懿传 spoke up for Ruyi and she will be remembered by us. It is so unfair and tragic. Ruyi was probably too forwarded thinking for her period in history and she was well educated and intelligent. Such a beautifully made series and even though the series was not made entirely according to the written history (the only acceptable narrative) we could figure out something ... RIP. 2 centuries before Qianlong and Ruyi, in the Ottoman Empire, Sultan Suleyman treated his empress Hurrem (a Ruthenian slave kidnapped from her homeland) much much better than Qianlong treated his wife. The sultan became monogamous and closed his harem for the love of his empress. Look at how Qianlong treated his women ...
    Thanks for the lovely video!

@empresseseternelles , thank you for the reminder. 😉 The series was so moving that people overlooked the fact it was fiction. Thank goodness, too because it was an awful depiction of that emperor.

@@lanubienne2883 True - the series was sooo moving! Great performance from the cast. I read the court records (thank goodness I can still read traditional Chinese which changed little over the centuries) that Qianlong wrote that the empress hated him .... we do not know what had happened between them to make her cut her hair and for him not to set a place for her in the temple as per tradition (I supposed they were considered divorced after she cut her hair and he decided she was insane).. Tear-jerking series.

If Ruyi had actually documented or hid a journal about the accounts or memories of what happened within the palace, we would have gotten some sense of what goes on behind close doors at times. Sadly, the emperor destroyed some accounts that happened. I bet there were some mentions here and there. But that’s it’s.
Also, Ruyi is still one of few Women in history that actually we don’t know much, beside some minor accounts that probably survived. And used her kindness and caring moments to win some of the women’s to her side.

Also, ugh, that monologue where Ruyi mentions the harem women by name, 😢😭the emotions in her voice, the yearning, the regrets, truly some of the best lines spoken in the whole drama. Zhou Xun's acting will always be deserving of praise!
