Can You Learn to SurfSkate Like a Pro in Only 1 Year?

  • SurfSkating is exploding in popularity right now! But how long will it take to progress from beginner to intermediate or intermediate to expert? And is it crazy to think that you can start to learn this sport in your late 30s and get to expert level a year later? In this video I share my journey, as a 38 year old guy who decided to learn this sport and who started getting serious about it as I got better. I share the key learning breakthroughs I achieved each month and some of the challenges.
    This is a long video but I literally reduced hundreds of hours of footage into just over 15 minutes, so I think it is worth the watch if you want to advance your own surfskating.
    If you have never been on a skateboard or surfboard before, the progress is not going to be this fast. And if you are already a superstar skater or surfer, your progress might be way faster! Do what is right for you, but the month by month progress steps might be a good guide on what to learn next as you progress at your own pace.
    0:45 - Month 12 - I start by showing you where I am at now, pushing the boundaries of conventional surfskating
    4:07 - Month 1 - Figuring out the basics
    4:45 - Month 2 - First Setback...
    5:05 - Month 3 - Figuring out Pumping and Carving
    6:35 - Month 4 - Beginning to Introduce Slides
    7:07 - Month 5 - Serious Progress with Bowls and Slides
    8:35 - Month 6 - The Breakthrough! Things Really Start to Click
    9:40 - Month 7 - First Carve Backside and Frontside Carve Grinds
    11:25 - Month 8 - Drop-Ins and Wall-Rides
    12:40 - Month 9+10 - Integrating Grinds, Slides, Airs and Other Skate Tricks
    13:45 - Month 11 - Back Outside After Canadian Winter - Re-learning Skatepark Flow
    14:45 - Goals for Year 2
    I hope this motivates you to keep learning. If you have any questions or are having trouble with any of these steps, I do my best to provide helpful advice in responses. Thanks for watching, liking, subscribing and sharing!

      Really appreciate that Andy, I am honestly surprised at how far I’ve come in this past year - It is kind of like snowboarding, it can be slow to figure things out to begin with, but you reach a point where things click and the learning becomes exponential. Enjoy your surfskate journey!

      Lol. I'm 39 too. Got my board before Christmas last year, fell on my elbow at a skate park doing a simple back side turn on flat ground and that kept me off the board for about two months. Luckily I had a helmet. Before going back out, I invested in elbow and knee pads and wrist guards and gloves (should've had those from the start). It's amazing how wearing body armor increased my confidence to generate speed and lean into turns. I've surfed since I was 21, but never been any good at generating speed and power on a small wave with a short board. But surfskate really helps me imagine what that might feel like. Thanks Mark for your inspiration. Keep it up Andy. It's such a rewarding form of daily exercise for us "older" guys. Excites me to still be surfing at age 60. Haha

      @@yuuu2ooob891 You’ll notice I am fully padded for most of my skatepark sessions, because I have learned lessons along the way every time I don’t! It lets me push myself that little bit harder and prevents me from missing time on the board.

    I’ve watched this video so many times since I’ve gotten my board. Carving in a bowl on a surf skate is one of the most satisfying feelings ever. I’ve also had a lot of fun carving down a soap box durby hill learning speed checks and carving sharp turns while going fast on a pump track. I genuinely enjoy surf skating far more than regular. It’s so unique and feels graceful compared to how gnarly regular skating can be. To each their own!

More of a skatepark one with park wheels and C5 trucks but it looks like a great board if into learning bowls, grinds, and more progressive skating than just carving. Before this I was playing soccer 3 nights a week, when that came to a grinding halt due to Covid and shutdowns, I needed something to replace that really important stress relief. Something that like soccer that would be physically exerting, challenging, and which benefits from creativity and strategic thinking. The interesting thing is that you don’t have to read any opponents, just have to overcome your own limits and hurdles. Discovering SurfSkating is definitely the silver lining out of the challenges over the past 15 months.

    I'm essencially in the same situation - mid 30's, teenage years on a regular skateboard (stopped after I broke my wrist as a young adult), and a few days back I started surfskating which went surprisingly well so far, with first slides and stuff. I miss riding bowls and miniramps but was unsure whether it's worth to approach it again, but you are an incredible inspiration, thank you!
    I guess my waterborne adapters aren't first choice when it comes to riding parks (my deck, a Beercan Boards cruiser made of aluminium isn't anyways), but I'm already thinking about a dedicated setup. 😅

    Thanks Mark, enjoyed your video. 54 and only returned to skating just before covid. Hadn't skated since I was about fifteen and that was just around my driveway back in the seventies and eighties as we didn't have skateparks in Australia then. I now have a regular board for the skatepark, a zippy little 22 inch Penny board for short trips around the neighbourhood and I won a fabulous longboard which I love to use for longer commutes. I am very keen to try surfskate and am currently doing my homework, leaning towards getting a YOW. Very thankful I have kept in shape with yoga in the last ten or fifteen years which has helped immensely with my balance and fitness.

    I never really skated much. But I did use a Snakeboard a lot in my youth, so I hope this helps me with the Surfskate.
    I also want to use a helmet and protectors, even though i never see anyone with protection in Austria. But since I’m a medical Masseur it’s important for me and especially my hands.
    Hope there will come more of you!

      Snakeboard experience might help, or it might cause bad habits? I saw a girl at my local skatepark tearing up the park on a ripstick but she took a bad fall and stopped skating. To try to cheer her up I went over and suggested she try out my surfskate. She kept trying to use her back foot to engage the turns. But probably could figure it out soon enough. Definitely use the helmet and pads! Every now and then I go without and usually end up regretting it. When you are in your late 30s, you don’t heal as fast. Hopefully you are less worried about looking 😎 cool now as you may been have in your teenage days!

      I think you said on FB that you had no street skating or surfing background? That makes a big difference. Like if I try to do any of this switch, I am pretty much at month one, but I also kind of like that because whenever I am trying to teach someone and they are having trouble, I can just try it switch and put myself in their shoes! Honestly, just spend lots of time on your board and try making tiny adjustments. Experiment with foot position, weight distribution, where you put your arms... One day I was leaning back a little further than usual and all of a sudden my pumping was just working twice as well. Keep going! It will get easier once you reach that breakthrough month.

    👍👍 Mark, your goal(s) for year 2 are spot on. Style seems to be way down the list of what to work on for too many folks these days.... however when you see a group of skaters or surfers at one spot, I think you will notice that the guy with the smoothest, flowiest style, stands out in the crowd. Little things such as hand placement, body lean, a relaxed posture, etc., go a long ways in the style department. Hang loose my friend. 🤙

      Exactly, sometimes I fall into the trap of treating things like a checklist and just wanting to move on to the next. But you are right, the people I love to watch are more about having the effortless “steezy” (I feel like at my age I need to put that in quotations) style, rather than those who can just land a million different technical manoeuvres or tricks. Thanks for watching Dave, I honestly doubted anyone would watch that far to even see that part 😆. 🤙🏽🤙🏽

      @@ColindeSilva Hi Colin, the Yow Meraki System is fantastic and I have noticed a faster progress and confidence with the Yow than with my previous Miller surfskate. I bought my Yow on their official website and right now they have a few models available, although their most popular models are out of stock. I started to follow their Instagram account to be aware of their new stock.
      In regards to your question, you can of course mount the Meraki truck on a longboard (I have done so myself in the past with their previous truck), but a shorter wheelbase gives you more radical turning radius. In my opinion this agility is much more fun. Hope my comment helps.

    Hey bro your videos and content are amazing keep up the good work! As a surfer that has tried surfskating a couple times i ask my self constantly which is the best surfskate in order to slide and to do snaps (snaps, cutbacks as in surfing). The Yow Meraki looks very good for that but maybe you can give me a better choice for that since you have more knowledge and practice than I do! Suscribing and chhers from Spain !!!

    • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer
      @MarktheLandlockedSurfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Cristian! So I’ll give you my advice, but keep in mind that I am a landlocked kook who only gets to actually surf a couple times a year when there isn’t a pandemic. I’ve never done a cutback on an ocean wave because I am so bad at catching waves on a shortboard that when I do get a wave, I never want to risk cutting it short trying anything too risky unless I am at the end of the ride. But I’ve managed some snaps on standing river waves / artificial waves. To me, Swelltech feels the most like surfing and your body motions really have to simulate surfing to make it work. You cannot wiggle pump it like other surfskates. The wheels slide well and I feel it gives pretty realistic practice. YOW and Smoothstar are pretty close behind, but I find the smoothstar has a bit more pivot and a little less lean in the front, so the nose feels a bit more “free floating” like a surfboard. Personally I prefer the YOW or Smoothstar as all-around surfskates for having fun as skateboarding moves are much easier on them, but they still work well for surf training.

      @MarktheLandlockedSurfer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love waterborne on flat ground, but I find it a bit clunky and heavy in the bowl. Same with Carver C7 but to a lesser extent - It is just a bit more work fighting against gravity to get it high up on the walls. For riding bowls, I love a shorter wheelbase, like around 15” with Carver C5 or CX trucks, and wheels that are at least 81a for more speed and better slides. You should check out my video on my favourite surfskate for skateparks, it walks through all the details. • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer
      @MarktheLandlockedSurfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A couple advantages to CX or C5 style trucks in skateparks is their ability to ride fakie better. I just started landing frontside 360s on transition, and I've ridden away clean on the CX but not on my YOW so far because it is much more difficult riding fakie after landing. Also when it comes to grinds, you don't have to worry about jackknifing if your weight is too far forward. But for flow, I love the really loose swing arm style trucks in the bowl. They just help hug the wall a little better and keep smooth lines and momentum.

      They are more challenging than on a regular skateboard, but definitely manageable on Carver C5 and Carver CX trucks. I can do short ones on my Carver C7 board, but the board has a super short and flat nose, so the deck makes it harder than the trucks if anything. My YOW is supposed to arrive tomorrow, so we’ll see how it does!

      @@MarktheLandlockedSurfer How is your YOW? I'm also in my 30s and after having started with a cruiser and longboard some weeks ago, just tried with my new YOW Kontiki (34in) today and am curious about your thoughts vs your Carver.

      @@santiagopeschiera1743 For straight up carving the streets, I absolutely love the YOW. It makes the C7 feel “tight”. You can see my first impression on IG @surfskateottawa. For the skatepark, I’m not quite sure yet. Still figuring out my footing to avoid jackknifing it coming out of airs, and had some challenges grinding the coping too. Want to take my time to get a good feel before posting a review.

    Hi! Nice vid! I've got a question about the C5 trucks. How do they compare to your normal skateboard trucks? I was wondering if it is really different from simply running your regular trucks very loose?

    • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer
      @MarktheLandlockedSurfer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      More different than night and day! I can’t explain why, but they are. I tried making my own hamboard, I put reverse kingpin longboard trucks on a huge angled riser and thought it might ride like the C5s but it wasn’t even close. Just kept wheel biting.

      @@MarktheLandlockedSurfer hi Mark, thnx for that. I don't know why there's so little to be found on the C5 trucks. They seem to be the best of both worlds.

    Hey I wanted to start taking my carver to the park I’ve really been enjoying pump tracks but I wanted to know how tight you run your trucks for the park or not would be a huge help!!!

    • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer
      @MarktheLandlockedSurfer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Personally, I like them as loose as they go, but I would recommend sticking with what you are used to to start so that they behave predictably. As you get comfortable you can tweak to your liking.

    Well, doing surfskating with prebuilt skateboarding skills/muscle memory, is a whole different story than learning surfskating with no skating/snowboarding/surfing background at all, which is something I'm doing at age 37. It took me two weeks to just roll into the bowl...Now 8months has passed and I could only do basic things like carve a 5ft with grinding coping, flyout, slope slide/snap 180. Drop-in is still a nightmare that I don't want to touch...

      That sounds like great progress for someone with no boardsport background! Keep it up!

    Awesome! Thanks for sharing Mark! 36 and looking foreward to scoring a surfskate and learn how to use it!! Let me ask you: is it a "classic" skate deck you're using at around 2:50-3:00 min? With C5 trucks? Can you talk a little bit of the wheels and how you felt it?

    • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer
      @MarktheLandlockedSurfer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes this is a standard 8x31 popsicle deck on C5 trucks with Carver Roundhouse wheels

      @alebrenna441 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for answering! Does it performs ok? Would you recommend using that kind of decks? (Thinking of a bigger one right now, as I'll be learning, but i'm curious)

    • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer
      @MarktheLandlockedSurfer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alebrenna441 I think it depends on your intentions for getting into surfskating, but I wouldn't recommend it as a first SurfSkate. Better to start with something more standard with a wider deck and longer wheelbase to learn all the basics of pumping and carving, and when you are looking for new challenges, that is when you should look into customizing based on your own style. However, some of the old school powell peralta style pool cruisers do work well as surfskate decks.

      Far too many! Each time a new one makes an appearance in this video I did label it on-screen, I think you can see all of them show up in the first three minutes. My current favourite isn’t in this video, but I have some newer videos about the YOW Medina Camo 33.5”.

      For flat ground, I really like the roundhouse concaves, they are 69mm 78a. Super traction but they still release well enough for slides. I have a video on my favourite skatepark board that goes into detail on my fave park wheels, where I prefer a smaller harder wheel that runs faster, releases from coping better, and slides well. I think from memory they are 65mm roundhouse 81a, but do not get the ecothane ones, I really didn’t like those.
