Adjustability and forgiveness are probably the main advantages of newer drivers over something 10 years or older. Plus ease of changing shafts. But something up to 5 years old or so could still be an option rather than spending £5-600 on new.

Still playing my 2009 TM Burner at 9.5 degrees with stock R shaft. It still has a higher MOI than most modern drivers before this year’s TM and Ping releases.

I brought a titleist driver 2015 model less than 100 quid and three shafts of varying flexes a set of backweights, then fitted myself using a launch monitor and my own feel. When I got the set up to that worked put the shafts I didn't need on eBay plus the launch monitor. Got a well fitted driver for 170 quid and also the process taught me well Win Win !!

I actually have a TM R11 that I hit really well for years. Last year, though, I couldn't find a fairway to save my life. The great thing about the R11, though, is that it is adjustable in a variety of ways. Last fall, I messed around with different setups and finally got it where it needs to be. My last two rounds, I only had what I consider two bad drives.
Sometimes, you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars on the latest fad especially if your current driver can be adjusted.

I think most of us average golfers would be far better spending £100 on lessons rather than £600 on a new driver. However there is something exciting about having something shiny and new in the bag 😉
I have an old Titleist 905R driver. I hardly ever dig it out but when I take it to the range it smashes the ball just as far as my Callaway Rogue ST Max driver which is probably 15 years newer. (Love the videos btw 👍)

I still have the R11, it’s fine for an inconsistent golfer which most club golfers are let’s face it! I also have the original Ping rapture driver, smaller looking head compared with the ‘bucket’ on a stick modern drivers, it sounds and feels really good and is easy to hit.

Replaced a 2014 Callaway with Mizuno STZ in December, practically the same shaft, just 3/4 inch shorter. Instant ball speed improvement. Probably easy argument that if the driver is 10 years old, any modern driver will outperform it unless you strike it pure every time already (which I don't).

Just updated from a Titleist 983E to a PXG 0311 after a fitting in November. Now I am more confident with the driver going straighter and farther more as a result of “fitting” over advanced tech. Stock shaft and loft of older clubs make for less “customization and fit” over modern offerings.

I recently tried a fitting for PXG clubs I'm currently hitting Taylor made burners from 2010. I gained about ten yards on the irons and not much on the driver. The only reason I gained with the irons is because they are 2 degrees stronger. I think I'll just stick with what I have.

Honestly, my current clubs are approximately 20 years old. Yes, when I occasionally hit my friends newer clubs I do wonder whether spending the money is worth it but i subscribe to the philosophy of it is the archer and not the arrow, unless I get to a point where I am playing in amateur or potentially pro tournaments

Perhaps comparing the early M1-M3 drivers to the latest models; I reckon the stock shafts have improved as well. In terms of wedges, I’m not sure how much has changed as the older wedges (grooves in good nick) seem to perform as well as newer ones.

For irons, Cleveland 588 mts. For me, once clubs have passed the 10 year mark, I start to get a mental block. Drivers, I would probably be looking at the SIM line myself if I were looking. Something 3 to 4 years old should have plenty of mileage left but new enough to benefit from the newer tech.

Actually funny this vid popped on my feed. I still hit my 9* Taylormade RocketBallz Driver (1st Edition Green). I've hit all the new drivers up until 2024 and have beat all of them in distance with my Taylormade. This year I have high hopes for the Callaway AI Smoke Driver, will it finally replace my trusted RocketBallz driver. At this point I'm gonna go off dispersion over distance in my analysis this year. We'll see.

i think the truest test would be to have the 2 sets of irons all bent to the same loft n lie. that way the real test is the technology of the metal and weights. so many people that do these tests with irons anyway, never remind the audience bout the difference in loft/lie settings, and how that affects alot. but the purpose of the battle is to show if we are being scammed just to basically have our current clubs bent

Chris coincidentally I have that very driver it's the r11s and I've hit it well over the years but my take from this could be the modern technology could be my friend the definitely over the past 2 years have seen a steady decline and swing speed inconsistency while I do have a SIM driver that is my gamer right now I am unsure that it would help me improve enough at this point in time to go to a 2024 Driver . I will make the effort to get to a simulator and make some comparisons to see if it's worth my while I have definitely hit a wall as far as distance goes due to my age
