Depending on how long it’s been since descaled, or how much mineral deposits you have, will determine how long you leave the solution in kettle. My old kettle was bad to my laziness. So, I had to leave it over night. Doing it now with new kettle. I’ve left vinegar in for almost thirty minutes. Should be able to rinse it out now. Make sure after rinsing to boil up a couple of times fresh water in kettle. I can’t believe it, my lawyer said he never descales his kettle, Yuck! Great video, thanks.
Thank you for sharing your experience! I wonder how your lawyer filters his water if he never has to descale it? Ours needs it almost every other week lately! We have City water and filter through a Berkey.😮
@@ASlightlyBetterWife ok, i just purchased a hadineeon variable temperature electric kettle in February. So far I’ve been loving it. I used to have the old over the stove kettle. Thanks again for the tip.
@@ivanvelez7668 You're welcome. I'm glad to hear you found one you like! I haven't tried a variable temperature kettle, but the ability to adjust water temperature does seem very appealing.
I had to do this method twice, but it worked--not 100% like brand new-- there is still some residual scale left over, but I haven't cleaned my kettle in 6 years. This is the first time.
I'm glad you gave this a try! Maybe try a little more vinegar for extra cleaning, or leave it soaking overnight? I hope it continues to get that build up off for you. I have to do mine about weekly because of a white powder our Berkey fluoride filters shed into my kettle.
@@ASlightlyBetterWife I used two cups of vinegar. I was surprised how much came off after the first boil out. The second boil out made it 99% clear. Seeing as i barely used it for a few years and it came clean that fast I’m not complaining. It was calcium deposits. I’ll try soaking it next time and throwing in some lemon juice. I also use tap water, too. Might switch to distilled water and see if that helps.
You're welcome. They are not dishwasher safe. I think this is due to the double wall insulation and metal pieces at the bottom that connect to the base for power. You could use a damp rag with a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water to wipe down the outside.
In my experience it's fine on Formica. That's what we have for countertops in our kitchen. The bottom of the kettle inside is made of stainless steel, and it's insulated with other materials that do not transfer heat in the same way. This kettle of mine unfortunately took a dive off the counter after many years of use, so I've replaced it with one that is stainless steel in the inside and plastic on the outside. I preferred this glass one, but with children using it each day I needed something more durable and that required less urgency of it were to fall again.
If you are careful to not get water on the electrical components you could definitely wash it by hand. Depending on your water source, overtime it can get a scale built up that needs to be removed. It comes right off with vinegar and water.
The top area actually gets really clean as well just from the steam while it boils. There's some condensation that is visible after only rinsing quickly, but it's not that scaly stuff, thankfully. A brush could be super helpful!
@A Slightly Better Wife It’s all scratched up which I don’t care about. My only concern is if there’s a stainless steel coating and I scratched it then the chemicals would be going into my tea.
I broke the small little filters on the top. So i took the rest of the filter out. Will it still be good for having hot water for tea? Do I need the filter?
Hi, whenever I pour the vinegar and water mixture, it overflows and I freak out and turn it off before it spills on the element and damages it. I do this before it turns off on its own.Did you add a small amount of vinegar or did you turn off the kettle before it stopped boiling?
Liz, On my unit the element is covered by a solid piece of metal in the base of the kettle, so it isn't visible. As long as you aren't pouring any amount past the indicated MAX FILL line it shouldn't boil over or out. A splash of vinegar mixed with water is all it takes. If you don't feel comfortable with this method you could put some vinegar on a washcloth and wipe the kettle out by hand, and then rinse with water. Good luck!

Cool just bought one of these and I was so confused on the cleaning directions.... this helped out a lot.

hi there great video. I do have a question, how do you clean the filter mesh?
Just a quick rub with a wet washcloth works well.

Wow! Results like that are impressive! I love the magic cleaning power of vinegar.
Great video, thanks for sharing. I lost my instructions to my kettle. Are they dishwasher safe to clean the exterior?

So you can not wash it normally??
If you are careful to not get water on the electrical components you could definitely wash it by hand. Depending on your water source, overtime it can get a scale built up that needs to be removed. It comes right off with vinegar and water.
I would have used a long skinny brush to scrub a bit the top area and around the rim before dumping it out.

Does your water smell like vinegar after?
Great question. It does not. I let it air dry afterwards and there is no residual smell or taste once dry.
Good question
Thank you
You're welcome!
Question please what is water name
We filter our city tap water using a Crown Berkey filtration system. This Kettle is called the Ovente electric glass kettle.
Does it have a filter that you have to clean
On this particular model there is a thin mesh screen that the water pours through. It is easily cleaned with this method, or wiping with a damp rag.
I used the abrasive side of my sponge. Did I just fuck up my kettle?
Hopefully not! I haven't done this, how did it turn out?

what is the best way to clean the exterior of the glass kettle? I have the Hadineeon glass kettle.
You can wipe it down with a damp rag and dry it right afterwards. Drying it helps reduce any streaks that may have appeared from washing.
@@ASlightlyBetterWife just with a damp rag and not washing the exterior?

How do you clean the filter?
Use this method and pour the hot water through the spout down the drain. As a vinegar and water mixture go past the filter it will naturally clean it.

If that's what the instructions advise on your model I do think that would be a sufficient method for cleaning. White vinegar cleans so well.
