The Defender is supposed to be the utilitarian model in the Land Rover family. This thing is just for people in the home counties to pose in and imagine they own a sprawling estate in the country. It will sell a lot better than the previous model, but Land Rover is no longer going to be a viable option for the traditional market: farmers, military, weekend off-roaders, etc. Seems more like a natural successor to the Discovery 4. Pity.

Biggest problem I think people have is the big step up from the old defender to this. I don't hear anyone complaining about the new Range Rovers not being true to the original. Just a theory :-[

And the little dig about them always needing to be fixed is rubbish, my 2001 disco has been all over the Europe including the Artic circle and my own work vehicle is a 200tdi defender which I’ve owned for 18 years...it gets serviced on time with quality parts...it’s left me on the side of the road once in all that time when the clutch exploded, I’d say that’s reliable! Look after them and they will look after you!
Yeah that Ineos looks pretty smart tbf, the guy who designed it was a big Landy fanatic, and like most of us was disinterested in this new fangled bollocks.

I can’t imagine many farmers being very welcome in them when they walk in covered in cow shite! The customer base now is the rich and famous, they aren’t interested in making a vehicle for the customers who made them what they are today... last year I needed key code for our disco 2, I went back to where we got the vehicle new in 2001 which was Merlin in Cardiff, it’s now moved and changed names...I honesty couldn’t believe what I was seeing! The guy in parts said “pop into the show room and have a look around with a free coffee”. I just looked at him and said... there’s nothing, and I mean nothing Land Rover make now which interests me mate...he just smiled!

Should have just reworked the Disco 4 as a more utilitarian - like the D3! Knew Defender was going to be a dud when it was introduced as having "design language" by a guy in a poncy blue suit.
Its a discovery 5.1 ...they should of kept the defender name plate until they could have come up with something deserving of it....why not listen to customer request like jeep did...keep solid axels
Ford hit the nail on the head with the new Bronco. Land Rover just haven’t done it with the Defender. The Bronco can fit 35’s, has diff locks, sway disconnect, rubber hose out floor with drain plugs, coil suspension, etc. Basically the Bronco is true to its heritage while being modern, the Defender is just a discovery with different looks. That’s the worst part of the new Defender!
Not remotely "an impossible task". GMG is a designer. The face is an image end of the day. A FREELANDER face. Not good. GMG is a great urban designer, not so great at creating an icon.
