I loved your video Andrea. Straight to the point and it covered everything. I respect you so much for the Food Culture conversation. I lived in Nicaragua early 2013 and returned a few times. Nicaraguans love to share food with you. Saying no could be taken as a sign of disrespect. Thank you for explaining that clearly. Great job!
Well, I don't have money anyways and i,d rather die than live 9_5 in the hamster wheel that is big business, helping ppl has always given me a purpose where there was none, and I always wanted to travel, and be with great ppl. I'm seriously considering joining, it sounds better than where I'm going here in the states.
It's really an amazing opportunity to escape the wheel. Really you never have to go back to that after Peace Corps because it opens so many doors to other international development opportunities. I know a few volunteers who joined with literally only a few dollars in the bank. It is totally doable.
Really anything you set your mind to. I suppose once you do something as intense as Peace Corps you feel like you can accomplish anything. @@mistermoo7602
Well good because someone just said that I should join the Peace Corps and my first thought was "Heck no, volunteer = No Money" It is good to see you guys are actually getting paid
Why can't they afford to pay the volunteers a living American wage? Kinda unfair when we ultimately need to move back and "real pay" like 50k a year would genuinely make sense so they are not thrown in a terrible position once we return home.
Andrea, you should reach out to the my “peace corps story” podcast, I’m sure they’d be interested in having you discuss your peace corps experience there.
Hey! Great question! I didn't use my service to pay off any loans, but found this on the Peace Corps website. Good luck! www.peacecorps.gov/volunteer/benefits/student-loan-information/
You mention that you had to pay rent, but I thought that PCV's are provided housing in addition to the monthly stipend? Can you please elaborate on this.
This is amazing! Thank you so much! I just received my AA in Early Childhood Development and now I'm attending school for my BA in Elementary Education. Is it worth speaking to a recruiter now?
I am glad you found it helpful! It is never too early to start talking to recruiters or career advisors on your campus. I also have a video that covers this topic, which I recommend checking out as well: th-cam.com/video/G9iKBV7NCrM/w-d-xo.html It was the second video I ever made, so ignore the quality, but I feel like the info is there!
Hi, i know you posted this video a while ago but I have a question you mentioned paying rent to your host family is this a common thing or a choice you made? I've watched other videos where other say the PC pays the host family direct for hosting and that goes with groceries. Or where you renting your own apartment ?
As a vegan, the only thing I would still do differently is I would respectfully explain my reasons for not eating certain foods. Coming from a culture that is not open to this, I think respect is both ways and the host has to respect their guest’s personal wishes. It is an education opportunity.
Great question! Yes, they pay for both flights as well as the cost of two 50 pound checked bags. They also pay for your departure and return flights if you are medically evacuated (45 day limit) during your service.
Great question! It is a bit more complicated than this, but essentially by preventing us from driving during service, they are able to mitigate possible accidents. Since Peace Corps is funded by the US Government, they have to take extra measures to make sure they are protecting both the US citizens who are serving and the program itself. (If Congress thought Peace Corps was too dangerous then they could take away funding). Different countries have different levels of road safety, and in Nicaragua, during my service, road accidents were the 8th most common cause of death. It was unfortunately quite common to hear of a community member who died in a road accident-- I had a few students who lost family members during my service. One of my fellow PCVs actually lost a local friend during service due to an accident.
OMGGGG , I just applied to the Peace Coprs and currently waiting for the interview portion and that is why Im on youtube searching for this type of content and wow ! I grew up in Nicaragua from the age 11 to 22 but of course came back and forth to California. What a coincidence !! I would love to connect with you more ! Follow me on IG @nica_califa
Hahaha I mean I would focus on all the amazing work in international development and the impact you will make in your community over the two years of your service. I may not have made this clear in the video, but the tax money is taken out before you are paid each month and before you get your COS allowance-- so you basically never see that money that goes to Uncle Sam. Peace Corps is funded by taxes, after all, so I guess that's just the small price you have to pay. Don't let the tax part discourage you!
Your videos are extremely helpful as someone looking into the peace corps, thanks!

What if you have student loan bills?
Hey! Great question! I didn't use my service to pay off any loans, but found this on the Peace Corps website. Good luck!

After my military contract I rlly want to join the peace corps
That is wonderful! There were two veterans (a married couple) who arrived in country in the same group as me!
This sounds so amazing!
What about hygiene stuff, like feminine products, toothpaste, contacts, solutions, etc??

Andrea René Abroad thank you!!
Were utilities at your host family included in rent? Did you get a phone plan? How did you handle buying toiletries?
You mention that you had to pay rent, but I thought that PCV's are provided housing in addition to the monthly stipend? Can you please elaborate on this.
Great question! You are provided a monthly stipend, a percentage of which is for paying rent.
How did you manage the trips back home? Did you save your out of country trip days?
Yes! If you prioritize traveling home during service, I highly recommend that you save enough money to do so prior to departure.
How do people can people afford to do this with having rent and bills back home in the US?
This is amazing! Thank you so much! I just received my AA in Early Childhood Development and now I'm attending school for my BA in Elementary Education. Is it worth speaking to a recruiter now?

Thanks for your post! I actually have an entire video on what I ate during Peace Corps-- be sure to check it out!
Does Peace Corps pay for your initial flight to your country or your final return home?
Great question! Yes, they pay for both flights as well as the cost of two 50 pound checked bags. They also pay for your departure and return flights if you are medically evacuated (45 day limit) during your service.
I know you said you deleted your number, but would keeping it be an issue while in service?
Not at all! I knew a few volunteers who did. I know T-Mobile has a pretty good international deal. I just deleted it in order to save money.
Andrea René Abroad Thanks! Your videos are very informative and well made.
Why don't they let you drive when you join the peace corps?
