Chronic Illness and Disability Life Hacks

  • Hello! In today's video, I thought I would share some hacks that make my life easier with chronic illness and disability. As I mentioned in the video, obviously no two people are affected in the same way by chronic illness or disability, so these may not be suitable for everyone. Some are things I already do, while others are ideas I have found on places like Pinterest. Life with a chronic illness or disability can be difficult enough as it is, so I hope there might be something in here that could make things that little bit easier.
Please let me know what you think of the hacks I've shared, and also please do share in the comments any hacks that you have that make life a bit easier. I may even make another video if we get enough new suggestions! Also let me know if there are any other videos you would like to see me do!

I cook each ingredient by itself in bulk, then freeze per portion. Such a life saver because I can “build my meal” with all cooked ingredients but still have a lot of variety. I call those my little builder package (meals)

Also, here in the US, there's very little in terms of help for disabled or ill people. I went to the ER with a racing heart and shortness of breath....I was there from about 10pm to 3pm next day, they never made any diagnosis, just a couple of tests and an IV...they want $26,000 for that visit alone, and I have to follow up with Cardiology to see if they will actually try to find something. Who knows how much they're going to want for that.

Sorry for the late reply. I’m sorry to hear there’s so little help for Disabled or ill people in the US. I can only imagine what it must be like to be charged that much for healthcare. It must be so stressful for you. I really hope you’re able to see Cardiology and get some answers xx

Another excellent hack for keeping a shower clean is to keep one of those kitchen scrub brushes which you put dish soap in, in the shower so every time you get in the shower you can do a bit of scrubbing. This might not be best for people with limited mobility, but for autistic and adhd people it is a huge help!

Great tip. And you've given me another idea. I'm on my couch trying to find tips for washing dishes today when I can barely sit up, and I'm now picturing myself in the tub in my swimsuit sitting back washing dishes.
Unlikely I'll do that (would require too much work to get them there), but it's a funny image 😂

I'm technically undiagnosed, (and twice misdiagnosed with depression). I have Fibromyalgia and CFS and it's been a really rough few years as my condition steadily grows worse and I can't find a doctor who cares enough to figure it out. Today I am semi bedridden and feeling really down about life right now. Trying to homeschool my kids and do the other normal house wife stuff without the help of my husband and greatest supporter during the day because he's obviously got to work yo put food on the table and such. Decided to find some fellow peeps with invisible illness to help motivate me a bit! Thank you for your channel.
I'm wrestling with the ready meal thing myself too. I've got two young kids and I've always tried to be a really good example for them of healthy eating, and you're right there is a stigma surrounding frozen dinners that kind of just reminds me of either a 50 year old lonely bachelor, or a single mom without a penny to her name. I'm trying to break that mental cycle! I love making things from scratch, too, I love that challenge. If I HAVE to cook, I would it to be high quality and nutritious. But if I'm honest it's the cooking and cleaning that I need to find solutions for.

Sorry for the late reply. Thank you for watching. It sounds like you’re having a really hard time at the moment. It must be so hard having a family to look after whilst also being chronically ill. Sorry you’re finding the ready meal thing hard. It’s definitely difficult with the stigma, but you need to do whatever makes life easiest for you. There’s some great ready meals around these days, which are a lot more nutritious than they used to be. I also think batch cooking can be really helpful if you still have days when you feel able to cook. Cooking double/triple amounts and then freezing some for another day means you still get those home cooked meals but you’re not having to cook from scratch every day. I know it’s hard, but try not to beat yourself up for using shortcuts. The most important thing is your health and making sure you’re feeling as good as possible to be able to spend time with your family. You’re doing brilliantly xxx

I went to a medical supply store, told them my limitations & asked what they had that might help me. It was like a candy store! I ended up with a bristled thong/flip flop thing with suction cups on the bottom, that you stick to the floor in the shower so you just rub your foot in back & forth to scrub tops and soles of your foot. It's great, no aggravating SI joint by lifting leg up, no POTS dizzyness from leaning down. Also, a long handled scrub brush is great for reaching legs & back.

Depending on your needs, air fryers and instant/crock pots are amazing to cook with low mess/effort. And pre-cut, pre-washed veggies are a lifesaver for me!

Since I have poor proprioception & poor distance perception (double whammy!!!) I cut a bathtub grip mat to fit into my sinks, so I don't slam my vintage china into the bottom of the sink so hard. Also great for when I fumble crystal glassware!
A recent purchase of a benchtop dishwasher from a friend's garage sale is an absolute life saver. I actually have spoons left for other things, now!

I print out a sheet with pictures of all my medications & supplement labels (image search has them all) on one side, & my conditions list on the other, laminate it, & keep it in my handbag. So handy for both shopping, & talking with doctors/pharmacists to make sure I no negative interactions.
Also, the pill boxes with individual day containers are great, so I don't have to take the whole week out with me.
Also, I have an A4 lecture note book, & I write in each appointment at the top of a new page. I jot down questions IU want to ask the doctor, or symptoms I want them to note into my file, & take notes on that same page when at the appointment. I can flip through to see when an issue started, when my appointments were, & I don't forget anything.
Also, I do ask the doctor to note inconsequential symptoms as they arise, in my records. Often something that seems unimportant helps to form a larger picture later down the line. I say " it's not an issue that's a priority, but it seems a little weird...can you please note in my file in case it's important later?" so they don't think I am a hypochondriac!
Also, I wear no makeup to the doctor, so they can accurately gauge my state of blah. This is very hard to do.
Also, I have started doing my physio in the morning before I let myself have breakfast. It's the only way I can make myself do it without getting distracted. That way, if I get nothing else done that day, I can still feel like I achieved something.

If you're like me and can't have the boxes/baskets around because you live with lots of other people or just the boxes are too much clutter for you, something I've found is really helpful is just having a small backpack or waist bag for things you need frequently.
It's especially helpful for me as my bedroom on the second floor of my house and stairs are really hard for me.

And my bedroom is also on the second floor, so this would be a helpful tip for me! xxx

Easiest way to clean shower/enclosure is to toss a bit id dawn around it. Then use a broom (cheap 1 from $ 🌴) that u use only for this n just swish it clean. The dish detergent gets everything off. It takes lesd than 3 MINITES n can be done from a wheelchair cause there is no scrubbing. Thank u for the post. Im nit sure but i never looked this topic up ive only recently become totally disabled 9 months ago. But id like to gain some independence back. At least as much as i can on the good days

For cooking I use my instant pot and slow cook meat for 20-30 hours on keep warm. Your body doesn't have to work nearly as hard to digest the meat. Undigested proteins are inflammatory so it's double important to make sure you're digesting it

Thanks for sharing I was just diagnosed with POTS and MCAS along with celiac disease. I’m a stay at home mom to a toddler with autism and it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life trying to keep up and care for him by myself because my husband works 6 days a week for 12 hours and we are full time travelers for his career. I am barely functioning and I have got to get my health in order ASAP. Going to have to implement some of these tips.

    • @eleanormaraal5402
      @eleanormaraal5402 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

As an autistic person with some kind of chronic illness that hasn’t been diagnosed yet, I rely on my mum a lot and it breaks my heart. I can’t do basic things for myself like get myself a glass of water or help with the housework, so my mum is constantly worn down by me. I desperately want to help but my body is so broken I can barely move most of the time. I also need a lot of emotional support because of my autism, and I am torn between not wanting to wear out my mum and needing help. My mum also has autism, dyslexia, and health problems. As you might expect, the house is a big mess. Just wanted to say your son might not be old enough to understand what you do for him, but I do.

But I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. It sounds like you've got a lot going on that you're having to contend with - I can only imagine how difficult it must be. I hope some of these tips might be able to help a little bit and that you've been able to get some support with your health to try and stabilise things a bit xx

I can relate to having to rely on your Mum a lot, as I'm the same. I often feel very guilty for needing so much help, especially when I can see my Mum is struggling too. But it's important to remember that is isn't our fault we need this help. Have you looked into getting outside help from carers at all? It's something I'm currently investigating, although struggling to get my head around it a bit. But it might help give your Mum a bit of a break whilst making sure you are still getting the help that you need. I hope you're doing as well as possible today xx

I embrace the frozen veg. It's already chopped & prepped, won't go to waste if I take time to get through it, & has been shown to have more nutrients than shelf veg, as vitamins start degrading when produce is picked, & flash freezing halts that process. Then I spoil it all by nuking it, but hey, we do what we can, right? I add a poached egg, some baked beans, or some meat & an easy lunch takes 5 mins with no pots & pans. I bulk cook meat (mince, mostly) & freeze loose in a ziplock bag, so I can grab a pinch or a handful & toss it on my veg. Also great for fresh stirfry veg, just toss in a handful per person a couple of minutes before serving. Add in some ready to go hokkien noodles & you have a good quick meal for bad days.
I also bulk cook boiled or poached eggs, so I can grab one from the fridge to reheat in a mug of boiling water from the kettle.
You can bulk cook poached eggs by greasing a steamer basket, (solid with holes, not wire!) crack as many eggs as will fit (I do 4 in a 20cm pot) & let the watery whites strain onto a plate (use later for scramble) Lower the basket into a pot/pan of vinegared boiling water & simmer until eggs are the firmness you like. You can lift the whole basket to drain . For reheating, cook 'til softer that you like, then immerse in boiling water to warm through. I've cooked a dozen in a large basket, in a deep large frying pan. Cheers!

Thank you 🙏🏼 I use a hand sponge that automatically spins with 2 top attachments to replace just a regular sponge, its hand held and helps with the tub and cleaning the sink as well as dishes. An automatic spin duster with a long reach adapter has helped me a lot as well 💓

I have a couple hacks that I use a lot. I use baskets in shelves and drawers so that if i need to look for something i can just take the whole drawer to my bed without having to lean over it looking for my one pill bottle. I also carry around a collapsable shopping bag that I can use when I would have to take multiple trips up and down stairs or when I'm using my cane and I only have one hand. I used it all the time at fast-food restaurants when i got my meal and my drink so I could carry the meal in my bag and my cup in my hand. I also prep my meds for a month instead of a week but yes if you take more than one pill it's worth it to sort them.

We have my middle nephew take the basket of clothes to be washed down to the laundry room. I keep my purse where I can just grab it and then go, I write down things that I know I am going to need to do. I will do that for doctors appointments , I use a mop to clean my bathtub. I suffer for brain fog and low energy levels, pacing ourselves is always a good idea!!! I have two apps that help me with my medication, Medisafe is one of them and Epsy is another one because I have Epilepsy, too.

Having a medication List and the app is a massive help to me and I can't live without it. Especially when I can't remember how to fill out my Dosage boxes. And I'm terrible for remembering what tablets I've taken so this helps prevent over dose as I did used to unintentionally over dose.

Thank you! I have M.E. / fibro / pots and waiting to find out if I might have EDS. These are really great tips, many I already do and agree they save me sometimes, especially the pills being sorted as I am sure brain fog would mean I didn't do my meds properly otherwise. I also have a nappy changing caddy which I use for all the things my family needs when outside the house (sun cream, masks etc etc) so that I only need to pick that up and not keep going in and out for things. The mop idea, there is actually a product that is for cleaning showers and baths with a telescopic pole. I have been known to just squirt some shower gel on the walls and use the pole while in the shower! It's really good as it has a pointed end to get into corners etc x

with cp I always have a basket on my bed with everything so I don't have to reach or climb. I use post-its ALOT. with my mom sadly gone my sister tried freezing meals for me but it just didn't work well for me time-wise or having different people help me. so we went back to just cooking. not as well as mom's but it works. one hack I use is using tongs to reach stuff on counters, plastic bowls in the fridge if I can't reach cupboards etc

Hi Jenny, I just found your video, and it has helped me immensely with some brilliantly original ideas. I’m very pleased that you did so much research to be able to provide it. The only other hacks I can think of at the moment, are the long grabber handles which enable you to easily pick things up from the floor, long handled foot files for foot maintenance, and a long handled four way bath brush, with transferable body puff, lotion applicator, etc. Again, thanks so much, and good luck in all you do!

I use my phone as post its, think its called notes… aslo when I put alerts in my phone, I write what it is ringing for… also I have in My phone in Notes I have Medical info. In it is also my information contact people, heath insurance numbers etc, allergies for meds and food, meds I take and a history of operations and new diseases since birth. Only put in the BIG things. And at the bottom I have a medical diary. Yesterday I found out that all paper medical notes since 1970 were lost in the University Hospital Amsterdam. In the computer they only have the last 10 years. So operations that have a had an anaphalactic reaction, ALL LOST. Not for me its in my phone and in the cloud… very often at an ER they want me to email my dossier to them… clothing tip: dress in one colour ! Light, dark of one color counts as one color ! My buisiness used to be The Imagemaker. Is easiest to buy or determine 2 basic colors and 4 accent colors nothing else and everything matches. Personally I have grey, all shades as basic and white, pink and red as accent. Really easy and never bores because everything matches. Now adays I just buy cotton, polyamide and elastic(an) as fabrics. Easy to wash, comfortable materials and stay looking good for a long time. Everything with acrilyc stays in the shops, pills and looks bad quickly !
