Skimbleshanks is the saving grace of this film. Steven McRae is an amazing performer and him using a click track (hi Sideways fans) makes sure the tempo is consistent. Plus, its a fun song. He deserves to redo his number in live action.
I absolutely love Sideways vids, the Cats analysis being my favorite. The absolute descent into madness he has while talking about the entire movie. What a mood. Skimbleshanks is my favorite from the musical and my favorite from the movie. My friend and I saw the movie the night it opened. We agreed that Skimbleshanks was the only saving grace for this movie. Not even the off-beat CGI dancing cockroaches could've saved it.

Saw him years ago at the Royal Ballet in the nutcracker and really enjoyed his performance. And then suddenly he pops up in this and I was like ????? 😂
You made me go and watch that scene and...I actually enjoyed it! The CGI is still off putting but the performance offset it enough that I didn't mind it as much, what a great job he did.
I went to a "rowdy" screening of Cats in early 2020 and despite the crowd kind of playing up the mockery a bit too much at times Skimbleshanks still got an honest roaring applause. McRae really did give it all to this disaster.
I don’t like Cats The Musical at all (Cats as pets are adorable furry predators though and I like them). But man does this movie show why some musicals should not be made into movies and why the stage is where they should be and should stay. I still wish they had gone the Spielberg animated feature way. It would certainly be less unsettling than floating human faces with some kitty features and real human hands & feet. Oh well. It’s a good drunk watch
My favorite fun fact about this movie is that it was so bad that it caused Andrew Lloyd Webber, famously a cat person, have to get an emotional support dog

And than later when he had to fly somewhere, he wanted to take the dog with him in the passenger cabin and wrote the airline that he was emotionally damaged and needed the dog with him always, so the airline asked for prove and he basically just referenced the movie and the airline was like ‘okay, fair point.’ So from my understanding the movie was the reason he got a dog but it doesn’t in fact seem to be a registered emotional support dog.

I came out of the theatre like “what was all the complaining about?” I mean, zipper human cockroaches were a little traumatizing, but I liked how the film attempted to make the story a little more explicit in its plot, and I enjoyed Francesca Hayward’s performance a lot! Film and stage are two different mediums, and comparing the two is like apples and oranges.
I love it, it’s not a perfect movie but I kind of love how absolutely strange it is (also there are some aspects of it I genuinely do love; Skimbleshanks, the huge sets, a lot of the performances etc)
this is the closest i've ever gotten to watching cats and honestly it's the only cats related content i want. please keep making this series this was a blast to watch.
I have a theory that Cats 2019 somehow sparked a weird alternate universe we've been stuck in dealing with Covid 19 and all the other craziness of the past 3 years.
I did not realise how genuinely awful the facial tracking in the CGI is, this definitely will not age well even as a CGI movie for a movie that was pretty heavily marketed as this incredible CGI technology at the very beginning of production

I was a total theater kid growing up, but as I’ve moved into adulthood I’ve drifted away from it for a bunch of reasons that are too long to explain here. But this channel has totally reignited the spark. I’m listening to soundtracks again, catching up on all that’s been going on since I’ve been out of touch, and even thinking about going back to vocal lessons for fun. Sideways has a great video about the CATS movie versus the show, and he does a great job explaining why it's so important that Grizabella is chosen to go to the Heavyside Lair, and why it works.
Cats is going to become a cult classic, just you wait (in the wings). It's got a weird vibe and everyone thinks its unhinged but still, pays money to see it, AND everyone knows about it. This is just like the original production of cats. Its atcually a cinematic masterpiece.
My kid and I just got back to the Pacific Northwest after a month in Australia. On the way down, we were bored enough to attempt to watch Cats 2019 on the plane. We didn’t last 5 minutes. I know it’s become something of a “cool” thing to hate on the show, but in its earlier incarnations the good outweighed the weird. It was the first show I saw as a child, and started my lifelong love of musical theatre. And I dare anyone to try and say the taped version from the 90s isn’t great. 😤 But the movie? Even knowing it was going to be bad didn’t prepare me for how truly f*cking terrible it was. It astonishes me that legitimately talented people could have been involved in something so aggressively awful, unless they were doing it out of a deep personal antipathy toward the show, its creator, or its fans. The fact that such an insulting monstrosity was the product of countless hours of work, and staggering sums of money, boggles the mind. I was in a (very not good) summerstock-ish production of Cats as a child (which I’m pretty sure wasn’t licensed or anything, despite us performing it in various forms for almost TWO YEARS. Very weird time 🤔) and our bunch of nerdy kids and theatre geek adolescents DID A BETTER JOB. With costumes cobbled together by our varyingly-skillful parents, and only a piano for accompaniment. I’m actually still angry about the few minutes I endured. Argh 🤬🤬🤬
I didn’t know I needed this until I saw it. I don’t know why but I curated a horrifying fascination with cats thanks to the flaming garbage fire that is the 2019 movie. I know all of the names of the cats now. That information is just taking up space in my brain and now I spend all my days watching commentators rip apart this movie to shreds. I remember when this came out just before Covid hit. I was a huge fan of the original 1999 movie and went and saw it on Christmas day. Immediately regretted it but got the idea to go back and see it again and drop acid with a few friends before hand. It was SO MUCH FUN! I wish I could do it all over again for the first time. Also, sorry to other movie goers who had to listen to me and my friends cackling like witches in the back. I do like the movie for what it is, just crazy fucked up fun. Obviously I wanted it to be good since I'm a fan of the original, but I guess It's like how I still want to see the original ugly version of the Sonic movie.

Honestly, I feel like if/when Cats gets revived next, both he and Francesca Hayward should reprise their roles as the ultimate comeback arc.

It’s up there with Xanadu and Grease 2 where it really isn’t that well done, but the campiness somehow makes it not horrible.

I do like the movie for what it is, just crazy fucked up fun. Obviously I wanted it to be good since I'm a fan of the original, but I guess It's like how I still want to see the original ugly version of the Sonic movie.
