3 things.
1. So much love for the GH5 as I started my photo / video life using that camera a few years back.
2. Sweet hack for CST in resolve, if you just type "P" in gamma and color space it instantly brings you to Panasonic, rather than having to scroll. Same with "R" for Rec.709 etc...
3. Great video! Definitely still a great camera in 2024 and I wish I kept mine as a C cam.
The hacked GH1/GH2 were legendary too. Loved those cameras. “Upstream Color” was famously shot on a hacked GH2.
You make me excited about any camera like nobody else
The GH5 is the camera that changed the game back in 2017. The specs the Ibs to this day Sony nor Conon can bring a true Mirrorless camera that can match the GH5. Can now get one for 500 or 800. The GH5 was the camera I felt that if I own would mean I have reach a level to use the camera. Started with the G7 then the G80 finally got the GH5 and it's a camera I'll never sell. I do have the S5ii as I wanted a FM camera and will prob get the G9ii but the GH5 will still be uses as the 3rd camera. Such a benchmark camera.
Currently rocking a GH5 and love it. Just so hard to beat all the features for the price.
Way back in 2017 I sold my C100 and up/down graded to the GH5. The footage definitely had a less cinematic and more "videoy" look to it. But the 4k, 10bit, slow-motion, IBIS, etc made it better for the wedding videos I was shooting at the time. I have very fond memories of it overall.
I agree with these sentiments! The GH5 was before it’s time! I hated how clinical the image was even with me adding vintage lenses and filters lol! I regret selling it though!
I had a G7 for years, and I wanted to upgrade. I went for the BMPCC4k, but I was REEAALLY close to getting this. An incredible value atm.
Still got mine. Got gh6 but many times reach for 5. It just feels good
my personal favorite channel, keep it up
Thanks for saying that, really appreciate it
The GH5 was one of our go-to wedding rigs wayyy back in the day! Paired it with a Fuji XT3(interesting I know), but ultimately let it go for similar reasons. Still heavily involved in the Lumix ecosystem and have considered getting a GH5 again for a C cam/backup to our S bodies. Great work Jake, much love from Tennessee!
I would love to get my hands on an S series soon. Which ones are you currently using and have you noticed an improvement in color science?
@@jakehayden998 Currently have the S5ii and the S1 and yes, they are vastly improved in the color department. Additionally, the S1 has one of the most "organic" feeling images from a hybrid body i've used. It's second only to my 6KP.
Owned the OG S5 for a while as well and its great! Would love to see an S line in your possession!
I use to run with the GH5 on an old job I had and enjoyed the camera but struggled with the colour management - I think similar to you. I've just recently come across your channel, also at the same time that I have moved away from Premiere to Resolve... mainly for the colour management abilities. What you're doing with colour looks like the right approach to help me continue to improve my footage - do you have a video going over your approach to colour? Even just having a template node tree with titles is beyond what I'm doing currently! Great channel - I've subbed.
Thanks for the kind words. I've definitely thought about making a video talking about my node tree/the way I approach grading. It's hard because I change it up so much and I don't want to lead anyone astray with bad advice, I'm constantly learning new stuff and changing stuff up. I'll probably just do it anyway, we can all learn together haha
@@jakehayden998 That's a humble response! I will keep an eye out for that video in the future. Are there any other creators you learn the most from that I could check out in the mean time?
Absolutely, if you ever have a Resolve question, Darren Mostyn is your guy.
Here's a really great video where he covers his node tree - th-cam.com/video/kdTMRQP_V7E/w-d-xo.html
@@jakehayden998 Wicked, thank you! Appreciate it 😃
Awesome video man! You should do a video on the Sony Fs7 too. I can’t believe how cheap they are these days. I bought one a few months back for 700 bucks and there is one on MPB selling for 1000$ with all the accessories. As you probably know, color was the main thing people complaint about but I think it’s just about knowing how to work with the footage.
I always the thought GH5 was nice at 3200 iso. The S1 and GH6 render color nicer but its no slouch.
Love the title you chose for this video
Yoo learned something new about Resolve and I've been a power user for years! The alt zoom on vectorscope is nice.
I had a GH5 back in the day, graduating from a Canon 5D MkIII to a 10bit 4K camera was so satisfying. Speedboosting the EF glass to it felt natural. I'm kind of still in the same boat, since my BMPPC4K is supposed to have the same sensor as the GH5 (just looks way better).
I use that alt zoom ALL the time, hope it comes in handy for you too. Also that's interesting, I didn't know the GH5 and the BMPCC4k have the same sensor
If the GH5 had the same Fairchild sensor as the BMPCC4K I would’ve kept it and been in heaven lol! It was hard years ago to choose between the two because they don’t share the same sensor and the GH5’s IBIS won me over back then!
Ur talking head angle looks amazing on this one🔥
great channel. pretty sure you’re going to be top camera blogger
I was literally just thinking about picking this up as a second camera. Love your videos!
It's crazy how many people still own a GH5 or plan on picking one up. I had no idea it still had such a community
Honestly if Panasonic released the GH5 specs in a tiny but solid body I'd buy it no hesitation
That’s the GX85. Has everything but a mic jack! I’ve owned both!
It hurts me to watch this lol! I just sold mine a few months ago! Was such a difficult parting! The GH5 was certainly before it’s time! The blueprint.
Hey there, I'm in the lookout for my first mirrorless camera. Right now, I'm really leaning towards the a6500 and the GH5 (used/refurbished for 400-650€). While I'd prefer to stick with Sony for E-mount, it's not a deal-breaker if I can't. My focus is about 60% on video and 40% on photography. My budget is around 400-600€, whether it's new, refurbished, or used. I'm also fine with waiting for new releases as my camera purchase is planned around summer. Any advice or recommendations would be awesome and i hope someone can help me out!
Siempre pensé que la cámara no daba toda su calidad por los flujos de trabajo y las tendencias del momento. Sería muy bueno ver un flujo de trabajo actualizado, ya con toda tu experiencia.
I absolutely Love my GH5 and i have no reason to switch to a newer camera currently
I remember when I got the GH1 and how much fun I had with that camera.
A true testament of this camera is its ability to support indie creatives. Back in 2019, I shot this short film with my friends and we had little to no money, but I was able to push the GH5 to the max and get some stunning image quality. It really is a fantastic camera and although I'm shooting with an Ursa these days, I often consider going back and purchasing the GH5II for personal use.

Dude, I still rock my GH5s as a B camera all the time. I always say it's time to upgrade, but it still shows up when i need it.
I bought a camera body with a 12-35 lens for $600, which I think was a steal of a deal.
I used the same setup to shoot, Food Quest and Make This Place Your Home, back when, so I thought I'd pick one up again.
I like filming opengate 6k and not having to use a gimbal. 💪
That is an absolute steal for $600
The GH5 is a pretty great camera, and they are practically indestructible. It all comes down to experience, any halfway decent camera will make great images in your hands now, because you know what you are doing. Its like musical instruments, you grab a cheap instrument when have experience and you dont remember them sounding that good back when you were learning.
Yeah i was definitely surprised how much better the GH5 footage looks vs what I remember. Love the instrument metaphor, makes total sense
considering I am still using my gh4, yeah I'd say its good.
Just sold mine because I haven't done much client work with it and decided to switch to the Canon full frame R system for capturing my family. Really miss the GH5.
Why not use the S5 or S5 II?
Waiting for gh5s review
One thing...you cant charge the camera via usb c.
....and it's got a secret 5(ish)k open gate mode in 10 bit 4:2:0.
Walked?? Lumix flew past the sky way back then compaired to others at the time so that they could run now.
This!
Hi Kevin
By today's standard, the GH5's IBIS is good, but not fantastic. Even the old G9 trumps it. The same goes for the battery's stamina, which is one of the worse in the GH line. As for image quality, you can make it as good or as bad as you like. I've been using the GH5 for the last 3 years, for both stills, and video. I don't need another camera. Let me know when the perfect camera has been made.
#RESPECT!!!!
