Old Guys Hockey - Outside

  • Hockey is fun at any age. Don't be afraid to put on skates and take up the game. I started playing goal at around 40. I'm 51 now and still having a blast. As a goalie (because there aren't enough of us) you get to play almost as much as you want. Getting called to sub is a regular occurrence which allows you to play at all levels. I ended up on this team because their goalie retired.
    This outdoor league is a mix of beginners, older players who picked up the game without ever being coached, and a few skilled guys looking to skate for fun. It's the perfect place to play and not worry about kind of sucking hahaha. Like anything else - if you do it enough, you get better at it.
    I'm posting this video for 2 reasons. The first is to show that you can have fun playing goalie (or skating out) at any skill level or age. And the second is to show that by filming your games, you can learn from your mistakes. Seeing yourself helps you recognize what you could have done better - so you can try to do that next time.
    Enjoy the game = Elmhurst YMCA on January 11, 2022

    night time, outdoor, bright lights - 3 ingredients for the most possible fun playing hockey. feels like it's been a minute since we saw a game video from you Morgan.

      Howdy Charles! That is for sure the recipe for a terrific evening. Regarding my recent lack of game video - I'm not sure how many viewers really want to see me play. I like watching way better goalies play so I can learn (Jack, Bonsey, Goal Crease Guardian etc.). I like watching goalies who play is sweet gear (You). I like watching goalies who are interesting and creative (JYAG, Nick, Hawkeye, Oldish, etc.). My game footage doesn't really offer much of that. This one was cool because it's outside and I thought it might encourage older players to try playing goalie so they could see it's fun even if you're not amazing.

    That is a really gorgeous rink. I'm so glad to see people keeping ODR's going. Playing outdoors is a really special experience. I was just driving by the old ODR we used to go to in the 80's, and there are actual trees growing in it now. It was really sad to see that, but our winters have gotten so much milder over the last 20-30 years that there's really no way to maintain the ice anymore. We've been having colder than usual weather over the last couple of weeks, though. Friday night got down to -22 C (-7 F). That used to be common for us, but I think it's been at least 3 years since it got that cold. The car definitely didn't want to start in the morning, lol. I think it's was doing the automotive version of "just 10 more minutes".
    You had some really nice stops in there, Morgan. The glove save was especially nice. I'm impressed at your balance when you pad slide. That's really difficult and you make it look easy. I totally know what you mean about getting up on one foot. I was always a lefty-getter-upper too. I think it's because you instinctively learn to push with your stick to get back up, which means you balance on the left foot, but it might also be a natural extension of handedness. I assume southpaw goalies favour their right foot for the same reason, but I don't know for sure.

      Ha! Thanks for the compliments, TAG. I love the automotive "10 more minutes idea". Now I know what my car's thinking. We are super lucky to have this ODR. Our winters are too warm also and most private ODRs around here decided it's just too big a hassle. This place has freeze coils so they can maintain ice even in fairly warm weather. There's an ODR a block away from my house but last year they gave up on it and it's just basketball now darn it all. I never thought about handedness as being the reason I instinctively get up on that leg. Good observation. I'm always afraid of pulling a groin and I think it's a defensive reflex for me ever since I pulled my right groin a few years ago.

      @@iceicegoalie-OG I didn't know anything about freeze coils, so I'll have to look into that. It's really awesome to know that the outdoor experience is still available to people.
      I hear you on the groin pull. I did it once and it took almost a month to heal. That was the Weekend Warrior Syndrome kicking in, lol. Sometimes I forgot that my not-quite-NHL body couldn't always pull off split saves without consequences.

      Hi Jack, man thanks, that makes me feel cool. Guess what? I got a Binnington jersey for Christmas. It's awesome. I'm gonna have to come down there and go to a game with you. They'll beat me up if I wear it around here. With my daughter going to school right there, she really wants to go. If not this season, definitely next season.

      @@iceicegoalie-OG sounds like a great Christmas gift. He said play for the Chicago Wolves for a while, but from the way your talking about it, it sounds like there may be a blue note crest on it. This brings up a very interesting point I never thought about. How many incognito Chicago fans are cleverly disguised as Blues fans when we play each other?
      Lol. Going to a game together would be a blast! I haven't been since all the restrictions started, but if you guys ever do decide to go to a game, please give me a call and let me know!!

      @@JackMuren Oh it's got the note. It's from the Winter Classic. I secretly love Detroit and St. Louis but don't tell my Chicago friends. When I first got into hockey, the Wings, Blues, North Stars and Blackhawks all had the coolest jerseys and the best rivalries. I'll find a game we can go to. Doesn't have to be against the Hawks.

    That looked like so much fun! That is an awesome ODR. You made some good saves out there! When I was a kid, I was on a team for a few years and we practiced on an ODR. This video brought back a lot of fun memories. Thanks for sharing, hope all is well!

      Thanks for watching, Jarrod. So many of us got to play on ODRs when we were kids. I never got a chance to play on one this nice until now and it's crazy fun. Glad this helped you bring back those good times. Now that you mention it I remember playing on this flooded retention pond - probably circa 1986 - where they put up boards and lights. It was just rat hockey and no goalies, but we played all day no matter how cold it was.

    • @iceicegoalie-OG
      @iceicegoalie-OG  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Did you ever injure your left leg? I think old injuries make us develop habits that are trying to protect a perceived weak body part.

    • @RandomVideoCreator2018
      @RandomVideoCreator2018 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iceicegoalie-OG I don't think I have any significant injuries I can recall besides pulling a muscle. I think it's mainly just me getting used to getting up on my right leg or something like that, unless that sounds weird xD. My mom does it too, she gets up on her right leg all the time. I'm working on training my left so I can get up on both legs quickly!
      Also, this is random but sometime this week i'm gonna set up my gopro on my helmet for my floor hockey game and then next week I might post the footage on youtube! I'm psyched for it! Woah sorry this was a long comment
      edit: the league didn't let me use my camera, but i'll try to get some other gopro footage!
