  • Beer Comets on ice game footage. This is what happens when your goalie doesn't get much action and then, well, just sucks.
    This channel is about beer league goalie stuff. It's awesome!

    I think I go with a 5/8" hollow, but in 7 months I've only gotten mine sharpened 2 times, including when I bought my skates lol! I prefer confidence in my shuffle over power in my slides for now. I love the added sounds!! And I WANT that sweater!! Sooo coooool!!! Lookin great out there Morgan!! Keep up the great workon and off the ice brother!!

      Hi Mike! Thanks for the compliments. Now I have to find an Oldish Goaliesque theme song on that site you recommended. Yours is always stuck in my head! We just got the cool red sweaters a few weeks ago. I love em too, but now my team never wants to wear the light blue ones. I actually like those even better. I could talk about jerseys all day LOL. Shuffling was a challenge in this game (skates were a fresh 5/8, not 5/16 like I wrongly said in the video) but I love the bite for the slides.

    Love the name and the Beavis and Butthead shirt haha! Not facing too many shots coupled with some seriously bad bounces makes for a tough night. I used to sharpen my skates at 1/2" but I had to dial it back to 7/8" with my True 1 Piece skates. Nice video bud! Keep it up. Also...team jersey and pads are ON POINT!

    Morgan - not a goalie myself but I will say that my son goes with a 1/2” ROH on his skates. He definitely wants the bite for power pushes over a shallower hollow. Had a lot of issues with shops not sharpening correctly. Finally found success with Troy at North Shore Ice Arena - he knows his stuff!

      12daasdf - Thanks for watching and for your comment! 1/2" sounds like the right choice. And having a good sharpening guy is key for sure! Eric at Jerry's Hockey Warehouse is another master craftsman with the sharpener.

    Hey Morgan. I've been waiting for this video. First off, your setup is pretty sweet. Love the firebird pads. Also your teams jerseys are slick. The logo is awesome and the colors really set it off. Some tough breaks in this one. I hate deflection goals. They are so hard to stop. Overall i think you did really well. Your editing was great! I liked how you put the guys on the bench on camera at the intermission. I sharpen my skates at a 5/8" hollow. There really is no right or wrong hollow. Just what feels comfortable for you. Most important thing with sharpening is consistency. Find some place you trust and stick with them. Great job on the video! Can't wait for another one.

    • @iceicegoalie-OG
      @iceicegoalie-OG  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much Jack! The Firebird pads are pretty sweet! When I had them made I brought a couple other designs over along with this one, but the guys at the shop said I'd be crazy to go with anything else. So glad they convinced me. The new red sweaters are a hit with the guys. We have older light blue ones with my same logo design. I like those even more because they're a little more unique. You are so right with the importance of sharpening consistency. I've had some seriously messed up blades when the wrong guy did the grinding. You slide so well in your butterfly, so I went with 5/8 (not 5/16 like I misstated) to try and slide like you. But I never even tried in this game LOL. I've played a couple times since and it took some getting used to, but I like it.

    • @JackMuren
      @JackMuren 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@iceicegoalie-OG the slide has a lot to do with how you push. Some guys push with their toes. Others push with their full blade making contact with the ice. This is why the cowlingless skates have become so popular. They allow you to keep a much wider stance, allowing for a steeper angle. Another tip i could offer is using a coating of SnoSeal on your pads. Enjoyed your video. Pretty cool your Dad follows your channel. Nice to have his support.

    • @iceicegoalie-OG
      @iceicegoalie-OG  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JackMuren I wonder if I should look into some cowlingless skates. I push with my whole blade with my cheap Graf skates. They're comfortable but I don't get the slide momentum I want. I'm still learning to slide though. I was always an inline goalie until 2 years ago when the Beer Comets needed a sub. Ice is much more fun, so I play it whenever I can. And yes, I am very luck to have such a cool Dad. He's crazy supportive and always makes me laugh. He also made the calendar that's on the wall in the intro, which is probably why he noticed I had forgotten to flip the month!

    • @JackMuren
      @JackMuren 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iceicegoalie-OG there are pros and cons to everything. While the cowlingless skate allows for a slightly wider stance and slightly easier pushes, they are much less protective. I would focus on your technique to start with. Get used to loading your push leg and engaging your full blade with the ice. Focus on making a solid push and make sure you lean slightly into the direction you want to go. Wherever your lead leg is pointed in the slide is where you are headed. I would go to a stick and puck and just practice your slides. That is how i learned. That and watching how to vids on TH-cam. You will pick it up super quick. Your Dad seems great. Having his support is instrumental in instilling confidence. You are very blessed.

      @@JackMuren I skated last night and really focused on what you said here. I need to work on my technique for sure. I felt like my slides were better but I kept catching myself make the same mistake. I have to break the habit of trying to "walk" on my pads to move around, which comes from inline hockey.

    Sometimes slower skates are much tougher for me than a fast paced skate. I lose my sense of urgency and am not as hyper focused as I would be so don't worry about it at all. echoing 12daasdf I also prefer a 1/2" hollow, although its been a LONGG time since I've gotten mine sharpened so I probably should do that lol
    Great stuff Morgan keep it up!

      Thanks for the encouragement Mike! In games where I see a lot of rubber, I'm better at recognizing player tendencies and anticipating shooter's options based on which hand they shoot with. In slow games like this, I'm bored and then all of the sudden, have to react and I forget about all of that. You are so right. The sense of urgency is missing.

    Bit late to the party, but as far as sharpening goes, I use a 5/8" but I also profiled by blades to 30 feet (profiling is basically how round the bottom of the blade is from front to back as viewed from the side, if you're not aware). Profiling is something not a lot of people talk about, especially with goalies, but it makes a massive difference in how "sharp" your skates feel. An extremely flat profile job is going to make your skates grab really hard, and a rounder profile will make them grab less due to amount of steel in contact with the ice. Another thing to consider is your physical size, a bigger goalie will need less hollow to have the same amount of bite (I'm ~230 lbs). Hope that helps, profiling is also nice to have a consistent feeling between skates since the factory steel usually isn't identical between feet.

    • @iceicegoalie-OG
      @iceicegoalie-OG  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Southeast Sieve Thanks for the comment and sharpening info. I've never heard of profiling before so that helps a lot! I really like a lot of bite. I'm still learning the butterfly slides and need all the help I can get.

      @@iceicegoalie-OG I prefer a balance between shuffles and slides, so you may like a narrower hollow and flatter profile if you plan on being slide-heavy.
