good stuff. when should I, after arriving in Cebu from Texas, go get my 1st visa extension, and should I go to JRC to have them do all the paperwork for me. I plan on living in Cebu for a long time, being over 70, will consider the military visa to stay here. I have my original dd-214, an apostilled birth certificate, and a ss form. I used JRC to get my SRRV. All things considered I am glad that I did. I did have a big hiccup transferring my deposit. I followed step by step instructions given by their representative but the first transfer had problems. The PRA bank claims that they never received it but even with the receipt from transfer I couldn't get the lost $1,500. Not sure where the problem actually was but I still lost $1,500. I will still continue to use JRC. I have contacted them to renew my SRV ARC-I card next month.

Almost all local background checks only include the current state that you reside in. If you have moved from where you have a record, it should not show up. Not positive, but I have been told, that after you have been in the Philippines for 6 months, they no longer require a local background check from your home country. They do a Philippines check and a Interpol check, so unless Interpol has a record on file on you, it should be fine.

As long as you are in possession of the SRRV visa, you do not get the money back, unless ....
1.) You surrender the Visa to the PRA
2.) You can use the $10k to buy real estate, that falls under the guidelines of the PRA.
3.) You die. Then someone else gets the money. Set up a beneficiary by using a lawyer.
Otherwise, that $10k stays in the bank, and can't be touched.

I travel often, so would it be possible to either travel away from the Philippines during this processing period or halt the application process temporarily until I return to the country ? And , I also understand there is a $ 7000 tax exemption available for bringing personal possessions into the Philippines for the first time. Would this tax exemption extend to the importation of a motorbike??

This is not to imply that JRC falls under the category of a Fixer, which the Philippines government has warned foreigners about multiple times, just saying that it is best to take care of your own visa needs. It is amongst the simplest of processes and does not require a lot of your time, nor does it require that you be a genius. I like dealing directly with the appropriate government agencies. The last thing you want is to get a BOI visit or stopped at the airport for having fake visa stamps in your passport. The same can be said for Philippines Driver's license...there are a lot of insider fake cards out there and PNP is taking notice of it. If you get caught you will be arrested, fined, and deported for xx number of years, possibly for life.
