Awesome! I know what to do now. Build a 420, skip the 500, then a 580! But the 420 makes more sense for me right now. Thanks Jeff! Great info as usual.

Thank you so much for this video. That's so awsome that the SAB 420 is a 500 class machine.

I agree it is really close in size to align 500. i went for maiden yesterday and when i got out to field she spun out pretty good (no damage I was ready on the hold switch) So the problem for me was that my old t-rex the tail servo horn is on the other side of servo so i selected the wrong setting (normal/reversed) in the rudder during flybarless setup, giving the tail the wrong gain but i failed to notince in pre flight checks. So even when you think your build and setup went well get ready for a curve ball every once in a while. It took me a little while and some head scratching to figure out what i had done wrong

I’m glad you got it figured out! Sometimes we all miss things! I have done it in the past as well. That’s why I always triple and quadruple check before a maiden flight because sometimes you can double check yourself in still missed something. We’re all human and we all make mistakes and nobody is perfect lol I’m glad you got it figured out!

Great comparison. I was thinking about this. Clear now 👍
Btw I upped d gain 5%, still has a bounce back.

Lower your gain. If it’s bouncing back the gain is too high

@@westhobbiesrc8051 I was out flying and testing. You were right (of course). I lowered overall tail gain by 2% to 40%, which gave an immediate improvement. 👌Tiny bounce back now.
Tail doesn't feel overly nervous anymore. It was very very nervous, always on the verge of wagging.

I think there are a few points of information you left out that help avoid a bit of the confusion. Align is pretty much the only one that still calls their model sizes with the "old" naming convention which I believe is based on motor size. All other manufacturers call them by blade size. Even Blade changed to the blade size naming convention. So the Align 500 is really as you stated a 420mm blade size heli, which is roughly the same size as the Raw 420. However, the Raw 420 is based off the original Goblin 380 and the Goblin 420, the latter being nothing more than a 380 stretched to 420. So it makes sense that the Raw 420 is a tad smaller than the Align 500 since it is a stretch 380 at its core. Yes, SAB developed the Raw 420 almost from scratch due to the Direct Drive but it still borrows parts from the 380 for compatibility. You should technically be able to swap out the head and the tail to upgrade a "classic" 380 if you want to get the cool black anodized look. I have a 420 that I changed the frame and parts to be a Buddy so it's really a Buddy 420 and I would love to have the black anodized head and tail. Then I would have a Raw Buddy 420 🤣

So yes a line still calls their helicopters for the most part by the traditional motor size that they have all used for many many years. Now helicopters are sized off of the main blades more than motor size because we have so many different motors in today’s day and age and motors are tremendously bigger than they used to be lol the RAW 420 is a true “500” size Heli or a stretch 380 just like the Align 470 shares the same boom and “size” as the new Align 500X just smaller main blades and motor. Technically speaking yes you could transfer some of the parts from the new 420 to the older 420 but I don’t know which can be transferred/used. I know a lot of it is a new design over the older SAB 420.

@@westhobbiesrc8051 I think we agree then on sizes, I just made the comment because you did not mention this on your video. At least the head and tail should be compatible. One of the things people most complained about was the bolt hole size on the 380 main grips that prevented from using regular Align 500 (420) size blades. This remains the same so they should be compatible. From the shaft down should be the difference. From the swash up should be compatible. Same for the tail. Different tail ratio, but should be able to be compatible. The frame of course will be different. I really want the cool black anodized head and tail on my Buddy 420 but I have to prioritize as I have a long term project: my first 700 size heli

Great information Jeff! My SAB GOBLIN 380 K.S.E. is much better than my Trex 450 DFC! I like your UPS Scale! Where do I get one of those? Weighing my Helis on my Digital Scales is a difficult task usually because when I pull out my Scales, there's usually a Blunt involved. 😂👍

Lol! My wife has a online business and shops out a lot of stuff everyday so she bought that scale at the USPS store and I steal it to use it all the time lol she gets mad at me because I’ll have it in the garage and she will go to use it and it’s not in her office! Having a big enough scale is very handy especially with building airplanes and such. It will also weigh up to 25 pounds which is really nice! I’m glad your KSE is flying good now!

Hello good sir. I am looking into getting my first sab heli, I am very torn between the 420 raw and the kraken 580. I would like to get the 580 size but for the price compared to the 420 raw it is quite a bit more and the 420 comes with a motor already. I really like the direct drive system the raw has and the price. I also really like the size and look of the kraken 580 I am just not sure if I want to spend the extra money on the kraken. What do you think would be that route to go?

    • @westhobbiesrc8051
      @westhobbiesrc8051  ปีที่แล้ว +1

That’s a tough decision because they are both incredible models. Of course owning the RAW 420 and RAW 580 and building and flying two Kraken 580s they are all fantastic. It really just comes down to how much money you want to spend on the build. The 420 is roughly $1000 said and done and flying of you have Nothing and have to buy at all. They all fly incredible, the 420 is a very stable and solid machine. As well as the 580! The RAW 580 is my favorite heli ever made.

No. Blade 480 is a true 500 class, while Trex 500E has just a fake size name (the Align thingy) while carring smaller blades, electronics...Blade 480 is for full size electronics + 5000mah 6s packs, also built to swing 550blades in stretched version, way bigger frame size, weight, needed power and presence in the air then 380-420 class. Raw 420 is much closer in size to Blade 360, then it is to blade 480.

    • @westhobbiesrc8051

No the blade 480 is a 480 class helicopter. So it is bigger than a 420. It’s closer to a what we now know as a 550, If you stretch it, the blade 480 is a very weird sized helicopter. The 420 is a Traditional 500 class model

No not at all lol it’s not a fake 500 class helicopters were originally sized off of the main motor. 450 was always a 325 mm helicopter but it was sized off of its motor size same with 500 550 and 600. As the years have gone on they have adapted blade size as the actual size of the model and not motor size anymore. The 420 is a true 500 class helicopter 360 is a 450 class helicopter.
