I hesitate to differ with the judge's ruling based on a summary of the case. There are too many details and nuances that could not be known or included in the time limits for a video. She was deliberate and undoubtedly knew what she was doing was illegal, immoral and unethical. This was not just a crazy whim. She was fortunate not to receive a long prison sentence. I suspect that she missed some education from her family and schooling.

A more just sentence would have had some jail time. Perhaps three years + 7 yrs. probation would be about right. Letting her walk away from this sets an example which encourages other misguided people to attempt the same scam. I also fault TikTok for failing to monitor and detect this scam. They are quick to monitor people's political opinions but fraud seems to be OK with them.

      by Madison Russo, Beneficiary
Overdue Update: Maddie’s cancer has been progressively getting worse and has spread all over her body including throughout her blood and also on her spine. She has tried everything and given it her all.
Chemo, radiation, and other methods have no longer helped. She has decided to start a clinical trial drug to see if this could be a miracle and put Maddie in remission. The process is unfortunately not short and will be years ahead. Yet, she is still smiling, even with feeding tubes and IV poles Maddie thanks all of you for your continued support and prayers during this time and she wants you to know how grateful she is for each and everyone of you all. She says she wishes she could “just go and give everybody a big Maddie hug and individually thank each person.” Without this support, she would not be where she is today and couldn’t have made it this far. Heres to the greatest comeback story ever and a miracle in 2023!

Stunningly bad take from Grande on this one.
Russo's scam wasn't even original; she witnessed the way people reacted to a family friend - Brent Ohl - dying of pancreatic cancer and thought "I would love that attention!"
Moreover, Russo scammed the very foundation made in Brent's memory. Brent's widow, Peggy, expressed disappointment with the plea deal IN COURT. The victims all wanted Maddie to go to prison and thought the plea deal was too soft.
But here's Grande saying just having a felony on record is 'too harsh'?! You have got to be joking. What a slap in the face to the victims.

Man, I've watched a lot of videos of people who suffered iatrogenic harms that cause some completely debilitating chronic diseases like Akithesia. Especially from psychiatric meds that often long time users are tapered off of way too fast (a benzo should be tapered over 2 years after long term use). It sometimes takes months after desisting for the worst of the damage to manifest. The regulators, drug companies and medical system as a whole doesn't seem to want to acknowledge the harms done to people, nor study it properly (causes, avoiding it nor treating it) nor own up to it when people do get drug injury, and often they're gaslit, told it can't possibly be due to the meds, that it's their underlying condition that required the meds in the first place, etc. despite there being enough case studies and info out there to know it's iatrogenic.
So many people harmed with no idea of the risk when they started. Also getting prescribed risky meds inappropriately when there are much safer alternative drugs they could have gone with, or when they should have tried diet and lifestyle changes first. There's one person put on a drug for heart burn that shouldn't be used for anything anymore, especially for heartburn since it has a high risk of causing Akithesia and other movement disorders, and they ended up getting chronic Akithesia.. wasn't even told the warning signs to catch it early despite the black box warning.

There is one 100% accurate way to tell if someone is faking cancer, and people REALLY need to know it if frauds are poking around for $$$. Not all cancer treatments cause hair loss: old school chemo causes hair loss bc it attacks all rapidly dividing cells, including hair follicles. HOWEVER, basically 100% of cancers, and cancer treatments, including the newer immunotherapies, cause severe anemia. Anyone with a healthy "glow" to the skin...any pinkness/redness in the complexion...is a MAJOR tell. This is across all races and skin colors. There is a reason cancer patients look so "gray" and frequently need blood transfusions.

10yrs suspended? So she basically gets away with it! As a disabled person who deals with chronic pain, Madison's actions infuriate me but her lack of punishment is just sickening! She and I were in similar circles online and she caused so much damage to the disability community. The felony on her record doesn't mean much to me, she didn't have to do *any* time and in my opinion justice was not served! She's not suffering, she's a childish brat!

yeah it's an insulting and lenient sentence, which is all white girls in iowa ever seem to get until/unless they murder someone. even then, it's not a guarantee. the fact that the state's prosecutors wanted everything to be dropped and it's only because of the judge that there's any record at all is literally wild. I guess Kim Reynolds is Team Maddie.

If she had outright stolen money it may be easier to forgive her mistake.

Serves her right, and it’s a good way to deter others from doing something similar in the future. Because it’s people like her that less people are inclined to help others who are actually suffering from real illness. You know, those who actually face death in treatment who needs help.

I knew a girl in high school who faked cancer. She even shaved part of her hair off and posted a pic of it on her pillow with the caption “why me”
She claimed that her little brother, who also attended our school, didn’t know about it so we were supposed to keep it secret. her mom was also a teacher at the school and she was a cancer survivor herself. The girl asked us not to bring it up to her mom because it was too distressing for her to talk about.
I was the only one who saw through her bullshit and she HATED me 😂. Nobody else would challenge her on it and one of her friends even went as far as to shave the side of her head as “tribute” to the girl’s cancer struggle. Eventually other people started to agree with me that her stories didn’t add up and they confronted her mom about it.
The girl also had lied about several other things such as a brother that she said had passed away from the same cancer (she never had such brother) and that her mom accidentally misspelled her first name on the birth certificate. Absolutely nuts.
