    To add, it is mainly applicable in US. In my country, some prestige high schools can also be called college.

    I know at least in the US, sometimes colleges become universities. I don't know if there's a specific requirement for such a renaming, or it's an attempt to gain more (perceived) prestige. In the US, there are in many states, State University, which is usually a totally separate system from University, and often students will transfer in.

    I thought the word college was used for USA and the word University was used everywhere else. Thanks for clearing it up
