  • El Camino restoration from the 2006 season of Dream Car Garage. See how we restore an El Camino back to original, paying attention to small details and doing the restoration the right way.
    1970 Chevrolet El Camino SS
1970 is often cited as the peak of muscle car performance, especially at GM, which lifted the 400-cid limit on muscle cars that year. This El Camino is a rare, well optioned car with posi, and the mighty LS6. The LS6 produced 450bhp@5600 rpm, 500lb-ft@3600 rpm. Performance: LS6/454: ¼ mile in 13.44 seconds @ 108.17 mph. This particular muscle truck was restored to its original silver and black striped beauty by Legendary Motorcar Company on the 2006 season of Dream Car Garage.
Taking cues from the Ford Ranchero, Chevy rolled out the El Camino in 1964. Through it's history, it's died, been reborn, lived as a confused truck car hybrid, grown into a burnout + drag machine muscle car, but all the while it has captured our attention as one of the most unique American cars of all time.

I'm restoring a 71 El Camino and so I'm very thankful for coming across this detailed overview. Regarding Ground Up. I've had a different experience than how the gentleman explained it. I'm wanting to put a 70 front clip on my 71 and build an SS tribute car. So I called Ground Up to see of they could help put together a parts list. That experience was totally underwhelming based on how they claim to be the so called experts.

I have seen and been in this car. I guy I used to know in Sacramento CA had a friend by the name of Terry that owned this beautiful vehicle back in the late 80's early 90's when it was bright red with Weld wheels. I think Terry was from out of town, but lived in California an hour or so from Sacramento. I still have some very nice photos I took of this vehicle from back then. You guys did a very nice job bringing it back to it's glory! I own a 1968 el camino SS 396 L34 with a turbo 400 automatic and air conditioning. They only produced 288 with that powertrain combination. I would have you guys take it to that same level of restoration, but it would probably cost way more than the vehicle is worth.

      I have a 72.
Generally the muscle car era for Chevelle
      Mid 60’s to 1972.
Because of government restrictions and regulations,
      muscle car movement
pretty much died out at the end of 1972.
Chevelle’s are popular for their muscle.
      Once the muscle was gone?
      Consumer interest was as well.
      So,
      Now thees are no restrictions.
I’ve made my 1972 El Camino
faster than it ever would’ve been
      off the production line.
      LEGITIMATE “MUSCLE CAR”.
      One year later (1973)?
      and
      I would not want it.
It would never be valuable as a muscle car.
At least not a classic muscle car.
And in California they are smog restrictions ,
      -starting in 1975.
      So
you can’t put a fast engine in post 75’ Car
      and go racing around.
you just have an old 350,
      👉🏽 with negligible horsepower🤨

Now that’s impressive. My father woulda been had his arms crossed, (he passed when I was 20, he was 56, now I’m 54, daughters 32 & 26 so trust me, I GET IT ;-).
Memories of having the Nitrostan blocked perfectly, only to have it later shrink in the heat of the ☀️!
Seriously tho, the little things, (you’re doing) are noticed. Sure some may say “The paint’s the easiest part!”, but have they ever painted METALLIC, (and I fight to not offend the owner, quietly pointing the color differences it to whomever I’m walking with, some not seeing any difference, thanks to Dad, I’m obsessive, JUST LIKE SEEING COWL GRILLES on a ‘70 Chevelle?
    Never happened…
Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick…at times, but not the ‘70’s I’ve owned/seen…
Don’t get me started on the ‘69 SS 396 early production Chevelle “ROLLED LIP” Exhaust Tips ?!?

Seriously bondo in the bed you'll never use as a pickup again Terrible idea if you put anything that bed the filler will pop out ruining the paint job I had a '70 that must of watched this show cause that what they did

    • @gordocarbo
      @gordocarbo 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hard to get the bed straight without bondo. Did mine so it looks new, carried parts in it just gotta lay down something underneath so it doesnt get scratched or dented .
