  • Fully restoring a 1968 Shelby GT500KR convertible from the 2007 season of Dream Car Garage. See Legendary Motorcar go through a full restoration of a 1968 GT500 KR, and some important steps you might miss along the way.
Ford introduced the Mustang in April 1964 as a mid-year production sensation which quickly became the icon of a new breed of cars called ‘pony cars’. Today, a 'pillar of American automotive lore' and extraordinarily attractive, the Mustang has been capturing the hearts of drivers for over 50 years…however, the Shelby Mustang is the ultimate asphalt warrior from the blue oval stable.
Ford, with assistance from Carroll Shelby, put forward 'the next hot item in the street wars' with the 1968 Shelby GT500 KR Cobra Jet. The mean and powerful look was achieved by Shelby American through body modifications including extending the front end by three inches, adding a fiberglass hood with fully functioning dual front scoops and hot air extraction vents. It had a brand-new version of the 428 Police Interceptor engine fitted with improved-breathing heads and larger exhaust manifolds giving birth to the 428 CJ. The GT500 KR or "King of the Road" powered by a pavement eating Cobra Jet 428 engine was deviously rated at only 335 horsepower when in fact, it pumped out at least 400 horsepower. Powerful enough to send the GT500 KR from 0 to 60 mph in only 6.9 seconds with a 103 mph quarter-mile speed. Additionally, the KR had larger brakes, under-hood suspension bracing, and staggered rear shocks to reduce axle wind-up and wheel hop. At the time, Car Life magazine said “The car is so impressive, so intimidating to challengers, that there are no challengers”. Limited production and awesome power makes the 1968 GT500 KR one of the most collectible ’Stangs of all time.

By 68 they were starting to get heavy & were a little more comfort oriented.Growing up in the 60s a guy down the road had a new green 1.It left an impression on a 10 yr old boy.Tis white convertible is how I'd want mine.

The attention to concourse detail is excruciating. It’s no wonder after the media blasted chassis inner frame rails. The inspection and repairs are so expensive. Truly amazing knowledge combined w craftsmanship. Wow. LoL

Enjoyed the video - nice blast for the past - but is the concours restoration in vogue these days? Beautiful restoration, and nice that the cars received top honors, but were the cars ever driven again or are they permanent display models? It's almost the same as the GT-40's...no longer drivable cars, just a commodity like Bitcoin or stocks and bonds.

Sure hope you use OEM sheet metal.....that Aftermarket AMD garbage made overseas has no strength to the sheet metal its like a Coca Cola Can. OEM metal had a much stronger Tensile strength.

...This is back when you could actually FIND a full floor, rocker panels, torque boxes OR inner rockers. . . I stopped looking for my 68 coupe and wound up using the floor out of an 82 GT hatch I had laying around. #LETSGOBRANDON
