Essentially it leans into a corner (so that it counters the body roll and the result is a level vehicle through corners!) I own an x5 50i with a third row and this option is not available to the 3 row x5s. The difference is night and day!!!
LIL cEEZE Man The Acura sh-awd is a clever torque vectoring system with limited functionality compared to the x5m. More importantly it does not have an active suspension with an entire side lifting up (the outside when cornering).
Picked up a new 2016 a few months ago, one test drive was all it took, amazing vehicle, way beyond what any other SUV offers with perhaps one or two exceptions. Absolute pleasure to drive, efficient when driven in reasonable fashion and when pushed it clearly takes on the category of beast! This one will be the keeper, great value great performance great luxury great practicality and that timeless BMW look that very few others can match. While other SUV offers try to update regularly most seem to just keep getting uglier, infinity and nissan top that fail list. Great job by BMW!
I see these everyday. We build them here right outside of Greenville SC. We build most of BMW's suv lineup right here at our plant, regular and the M variants.
Great job guys! Nice to see a review on this, i feel like it's one of the more forgotten performance SUVs because I rarely see them. See more G63 AMGs and Cayenne Turbos around where I live. You can pick up the first generation E70 for a pretty good price now, a lot cheaper than the F10 M5 yet it has the same M5 motor. Something I'm considering, if you can get your hands on the E70 try to do a review!
Excellent review. How about getting your hands on a used one and letting us know about its reliability and problems. Of course every new vehicle seems wonderful when it is is new. X5 are notorious for falling apart after 4 or 5 years. Will the M version do that also?
Can you try to give a comparison between this and the 50I in terms of the power and ride. Also, does this thing get the fuel mileage advertised or better/worse?
Maybe you didn't push the car yourself, but you really need to talk about how much mechanical grip this thing has. You can toss it into corners and it just sticks to the road just like a sports car. Look at the figure 8 and average G's, max lateral G's, etc. You mention some body roll but from my experience this car boggles the mind with how it handles. This review doesn't due the X5M justice.
SUV like this needs to sit on big aftermarket wheels & drop to its lowest ride height. That's what I did to it in Forza Horizon 3 & it looked................sick
Can it handle in snow yet? I also remember a Top Gear Video when these BMW trucks couldn't even get up a grassed hill then a Land Rover did it with ease.

Eh, I feel like a Range Rover Sport SVR is a lot more of a do-everything SUV. It's quite fast, handles well, and can still go off-roading to a good degree. The X5M will completely fall apart if you try to take on anything more serious than a dirt road.
Sad part of bmwx5m story is the fact that the way they build that 4.4 engine is shitty to this level that when something got broken it's easier to repleace the engine instead of fixing it😅 so if you wanna buy bmw x5m think only about this what you need to know like hp or torgue and don't ask and think about mechanical side of this car.
I daily a c63 amg so you know damn well I don't want to admit an M is good looking and I definitely don't want to be heard saying that I would totally buy one ...haha but seriously if my wallet would take it I would have just about every M and every AMG..and RS..and V..lol really every sedan with over 400hp . This car burn so much engine oil between each oil change, the dealer ususally give you two bottle of engine oil everytime you visit the dealership just in case you have no engine oil when you far from the dealer.
Really? I heard that ea888 2.0t burn oil kind often but not sure about 3.0t or 4.0t. I think that might because both bmw and audi/vw used to use Castrol oil as their recommended oil,after BMW switch to Mobil last year things get better.

I love your work Eddie, but don't use the "defies the laws of physics" cliche - they do not defy the laws of physics, they simply destroy everything a lot quicker to give you the performance - tyres, suspension bushings, engine mounts, transmission bushings, brake pads, brake disks, brake fluid - all takes a horrific hammering from the increased inertial forces - not to mention fuel use. Own one of these things for a while and you soon realize how much maintenance you have to pour into them if you drive them hard compared to a smaller M car. IMO if you need a large vehicle, buy something slower and more reliable & cheaper, and get a second, smaller high performance car for fun - these things are fucking stupid.
True enough, they are impressive pieces of engineering regardless of my opinion of them - but I'd take say a nice comfy affordable reliable CX5 to get the kids to school or the beach or whatever (you aren't goign to cry when they drop icecream on the carpets, and I sure as hell can't speed when the wife and kids are in the car anyway) and an M2 or Cayman or something for the weekends. Just makes more sense to me.
