Rocking and Rolling Crappie Trolling on Lake of the Ozarks #11 (7-19-17)

- Long line trolling for crappie with Bandit 300 crankbaits during hot summertime conditions on Lake of the Ozarks. Had to fight heavy boat traffic and large boat wakes. Caught a limit of nice crappie in spite of adverse conditions.

Great video Mike . I've been using your methods and have caught some 14 to 14 1/2 inch crappie in our local resivor . Fishing 30 to 35 feet water and with 90 to 110 feet line out using 300 Bandits . I had never fished like this until I saw your videos . Thanks for sharing your knowledge . Keep up the great videos and as always -- Life is Good!!
Are you guys using line counter reels or just estimating line length behind the boat?
Thanks for all the videos, especially these on trolling for Crappies! We just got a place at the 8mm, this year, I have been leaving our cove and trolling starting right there by the Twins, been having a lot of fun and success with the Crappie fishing . My grandson pulled in two nice 14.5"ers couple Saturdays' ago. Thanks for all your efforts and sharing on these techniques. Though been a burden to my wallet. My boat did not have a trolling motor (pontoon), so i was using the outboard and a drift sock to get me down to 1.6 mph , it did, but i spent most of my time keeping the boat tracking straight. Picked up a Minn Kota Ulterra Trolling Motor this week, and trying to get it all rigged and ready to fish by the weekend. See you out on the lake sometime!

The last time I fished the cove from your video intro we slammed crappie as the wind blew us down the bank. We weren't trolling, just casting and reeling in. We also caught 4 nice bass, all in the 3 lb range! Then we went back the weekend of the Big Bass Bash and didn't catch a dang thing in that cove.
Thats fishing. That is what makes it challenging and fun.
Just watched this video again for the third or fourth time. Thanks for putting out videos like this on crankbait fishing for Crappie. I've been trying to apply your techniques to Truman Lake, and have had some moderate success. It's July 20th, and the conditions are similar now as your video except we really have some high water on Truman right now. Per your video, I may have to try trolling in the river channels or more open, deep water. I do most of my trolling in 20 foot of water less but now that it's gotten hot I'm not catching much. I would love to hear your thoughts on video or by comment about how you pick your areas to troll. I would also love to hear how you use your electronics and whether or not you can see fish on the graphs while trolling. Maybe a screenshot or two. Thanks again.

You can use whichever you prefer.
Hey Mike what rod and reel setups where you using?
Hey Mike, question. If I don't use Bandit 300 what size lip crank baits will still work. I have several baits that have lip sizes that will go down 6 to 8 feet and other that with dip 10 to 12 and other that go down to 20 to 25 feet. If you were not long lining, and just casting the bait out 30 feet from your boat how deep would the bait go, by just use a slow retrieve?
I really don’t know. It just depends on the bait. You just have to experiment.

112 pound thrust. 36 volts.
What kind of paint did you use to paint your rod tips? I used a white electrical tape but I know it’s not going to last real long.
Just some spray florescent paint over a spray primer. Not sure florescent is necessary.

As far as speed is concerned, 1.6 is my confidence speed but I will vary my speed and let the fish tell me what they want depending on the conditions.

I took two cable stringers and made one with 15 clips, the limit on Lake if the Ozarks.

I fished Grand Lake years ago when I was chasing the bass tournament circuit. Great lake. Reminds me of Lake of the Ozarks.

No line counter reels were used in this video. Just cast as far as I can.
Dumb question. How fast do you troll? And how deep do those baits dive
Speed depends on the conditions but my confidence speed is usually around 1.6. Bandit 300s with 8lb line and a long cast will run 18 to 20 ft. deep.

The noise on that lake is insane.
I think part of it is the mic. It's definitely not that bad in person. Yeah there is noise on the main channel during weekends, but it's not as deafening as this video makes it sound.
It was pretty bad. That is the worst part of it. The boats and the waves get bigger and it is probably too late to do anything about that, but the noise is defining and could be controlled.

During really warm water conditions I fish over deeper creek channels or along bluff banks. I rely on my electronics to locate the fish. If you find shad you will usually find crappie.

Do you start looking in the backs of fingers or on the main body of the lake, is there a target depth you look for? Tim's Ford is a highland lake with very few flats, I shoot docks and fish lay downs in the spring and fall but during the warm water months that doesn't work. I pull cranks on other lakes during the summer months and do really well. Appreciate the comments back, would like to figure this lake our during the summer, it has quality size crappie (2 plus lb) if your ever down TN way would like to take you on some of our lakes

Use your electronics to determine what depth they are holding at and over what depth water they are holding over. It may change from day to day. If I am flat lining Bandit 300’s I know they will run between 15 and 20 feet so I may start out in the back of a creek at 15 ft. and troll out toward the mouth. I watch my electronics and will try to zero in on them depending on the water depth where I catch them that day. If they are shallower in the water column go to a shallower running bait like a Bandit 100 or 200. I will usually start out running some of each and switch out to the ones that I am catching them on. If you use planner boards, you can control the depth by how much line you put out behind the board. Precision Trolling puts out depth charts for most baits.
Just experiment with depth and speed, watch your electronics and pay attention to what is going on when you catch one and try to duplicate it.

Wrong. My rods are labeled and with that you can fish more than 3 rods.

Nothing like letting the rest of the world know how to catch fish out of the lake. Took us some time to develop these patterns and here you go giving away all our hard work. Keep this stuff to yourself. You are slowly killing the golden goose. I have seen several more people crappie trolling lately, and I think I know why. And the catch rate is lower too. Don't know why you think you have to let the world know. You may regret this.
