The M160 is a great mic. I bought the actual one which Eddie Kramer used to record Hendrix's guitar and vocal at Olympic studios when they closed up shop many years ago. It's still going strong today.
Mike’s playing is really great here. Could listen to these mics on those drums in that room all day. I gotta get a 201… wanna compare my 441 on snare top.
It seems we’ve been recording drums very similarly, Mike. Those have been my go-to kick and snare mics for at least 10 years. When I have the right compressors available to me, it’s been a two mic setup for decades to get my favorite overall drum sound. Many think I’m pulling their leg when they hear a finished mix. Close mic-ing just chokes the life out of drums and actually makes them much harder to mix with a song.
Yeah. It's taken me 2 decades to learn this: Unless I'm very methodical, have some mic-mover help ~and~ have most of an entire day to run critical test - my close-micing experience has been a crapshoot that often introduces more problems than solutions. The more mics; the more that variables can collide or get weird. Other than for some metal and fusion drummers playing on a particularly 'punchy' and in-your-face-sounding single, it's often just an overkill of rapidly diminishing returns not worth the bother.
Sounds great! I've wanted a M88 to compliment my m201 and 2 x m160 (which I use as stereo OH since forever), but now I think I will also get the m130 and do the stereo room and mono OH :-) Thanks...for making me spend more money...and for the upload! Totalt Beyer fanboy here - also of the dt770 pros. Cheers
Hello, i want to buy but i dont know whitch. At first i think M160 pair. After i discovered M130 and i read and read and i still dont know. I love M160 as mono. Two M130 sounds good, but why you dont tested two M160 and did you tried Glyn Johns method with them? Thanks for help
Excelente = Excellent. I was impressed with the degree of separation you got with the m130 (I suppose the panning also helps), but definitely the punch obtained in mono with the m160 is impressive. Excellent, thanks for this video.
I love the sound of your room, The mid side really adds some nice space to the drum mix. What is the size of your drum room and also what treatments do you have on the other 3 walls. Would love to see a video of your room. The drums sound amazing ! I have a pair of m160's and I really impressed with them as overheads and how they capture the cymbals.
Hi! Thanks very much. Unfortunately not. If I dig around deep I may find some somewhere but it was a while ago now and not sure which archive drive it’d be stored on.
What head are you using on the Supralite? I´m liking that snare sound very much. So much character. Maybe not for a general application but, for something specific, I really like that sound. Thank you.
How do you get such a Balanced sound from the M160 (mono)? When I tried it, I'm getting too much cymbals and when I put it higher (mic) I'm having to drive my preamp harder to get a decent snare response. Any tips?
Lovely stuff, Mike. Tell me: what does a single M130 sound like as a mono OH? It would suit my budget to just buy a pair of M130s at the moment and have the flexibility to use them as a pair or a single OH.
@@bdmchh Thanks Mike. I guess though that two M130s and a single M160 are worth it - there's the stereo pair of M130s, the mono M160 AND a mid/side potential there. Ho hum.
Love the video! Thanks so much for posting! I'm thinking about getting the m160 for a mono OH then later on getting a second for a stereo OH. Have you tried that out, if so what are your thoughts on that configuration? Thanks
I have tried it and it totally works. It just depends on what youre going for. Dont forget that they're Hypercardioid, so very specific to what you point it at.
The only reason why I ask is because I've heard if you get them a little higher than normal they sound really similar to the coles 4038's. Do you have any advice on trying to achieve that sound without actually purchasing those? Thanks dude
thx Mike, you have a good room which helps! Do you feel the m160 works well as a spaced overhead? or is it too directional? or i guess when you're placing it that high up it's going to pick up the kit evenly? thx man
Hey Mike - I know this vid is a few years old now, but do you have any experience with the 201s as overheads? Been interested in using dynamics as overheads lately, especially in a less-than-ideal room. Thanks!
Hey! Thanks for the video. I'm new to these mics and I'm looking to build my collection. Which mics would you suggest I get first? I'm looking to buy in pairs. I'd love to have them all but, my cash flow says otherwise lol
Hey Stuart. Mic choices are very subjective. So much of it depends on what you are personally trying to achieve. Any of these Beyerdynamic mics would be an awesome addition to your collection.
Mike Avenaim in using the M160 as a mono overhead and the M160/M130 as a mid- configuration. Where exactly are you positioning the M160/m130 for the mid-configuration? Is it in front of the kit (as a room mic)? Behind the kit??
I don't doubt the quality of the microphones, but these are some of the flattest and dead drum tones I've ever heard. Sounded like the 1970's. Would have been nice to hear the drums wide open with those mics to hear what they can really do.
Thanks for the comments. Those were exactly the tones I was going for in the video so I guess I nailed it! The mics sound fantastic on open drums too, I highly recommend them.
The snare drum itself sounds like a wet fart. But the mics are wonderful! Thanks for this video. Would be nice to see one comparing the M160 stereo overheads to the M130 in the same LR positions.
You can talk about mikes and miking as long as you want, but when your can't make your drumkit sound like it should sound, ik doesn't make any sense to me. The snare sound terrible because the snares are way to loose and low tuning as well. The bassdrum, tom and especially the floor tom are muffled like hell with even a half bedsheet on it, come on. Even the cheapest drums can sound properly and much better than this kit by using the right heads and the right tuning.
I understand this may not be your Sonic preference, however, I’ve used these tones on many records and the purpose of this demo was to display these types of tones. If you don’t like the drum tones, that’s totally fine - enjoy the mics.
Pardon Mike mais les réglages de ta superbe batterie sont vraiment merdique, rien ne vie, tout est etouffé. Difficile de se faire une idée avec un son de base aussi mort !
