    Thanks for watching guys! One thing I did not address in this video is *why* drummers should care about removing reverb/echo from their studios.
    An ideal drum recording is one that’s *neutral.* The sounds brought into your computer should have as little effects on them as possible; allowing you to make the right choices later, in mixing. You can always add effects to a recording, but removing those same qualities from an original recording is extremely difficult.
    If I had to choose a final mix from the A/B comparison at 07:55 I would choose the “Before” sound. BUT. These are not final mixes; they’re essentially raw recordings, ready to be mixed. The “After” sound, while extremely dry and focused, is far easier to mix in post. Add a touch of reverb, bring up the OH and Room Mics, and you get the mix heard at 12:49 (which will sound even better as get to know the new room, and spend more time in mixing.)
    If you want to learn more about my mics, mixing technique, and other recording gear that I use, check out the links below, and a few more in the description!

    I'm recording in a small bedroom with a moderate amount of treatment. I'm jealous of how your kit sounds with only minor EQ both prior to and after Audimute. I think it's a testament to recording in a good room, but also to your ability to dial in your kit tone nicely. Can't wait to buy my house, get a proper recording space, and get semi-professional treatment.

    WOW!. What I noticed most is the focus the change made in recording each drum. Un-treated, it left every mic to basically be a room mic and didn't allow them to focus on the drum they were recording. Very nice!

    That room looks absolutely gorgeous. That being said, I spent $30 on 10 king size comforters from a thrift store and hung them on all the walls of the room. I used Paracord and eyelet screws (another $20) to hang the blankets so they weren't actually touching the walls.
    The sound live and recorded is very nice, and I'm out $50.

  • @cheschaefer

    Hi Adam. Audio Engineer writing. Really good work. One thing I´d add: I think you should add QRD or skyline diffusors where the wooden frames used to be. It would look cool and add a little bit more RT60 to the overhead and the room mic and also scatter the high mids enough to eliminate nasty reflections instead of dampening them to the degree you now have. The room sounds way more controlled now but lost a bit of edge on the room mics and Overheads. Your playing and the kit sounds great though. I listened thru focal twin speakers in my studio and checked the room mics with lots of compression to get the feel of the room. But I guess that is a subjective thing...greetings from germany. subcribed

    What’s interesting with this is it’s drastically improved the sound of the kit through elimination of reverb but in doing so it’s made the 12” snare sound empty, less powerful and, well, small. Even with eq it’s just lacks so much body now. The masterworks kit sounds amazing though, even with the thicker Evans heads “boxing out” the sound and resonance

    • @AdamTuminaro
      @AdamTuminaro  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed, but the snare has yet to be mixed. Even at 12:49, I simply bumped the reverb and OH mics. There’s no “final mix” in this entire video because I didn’t want to take 2 weeks mixing the new room before posting the vlog.
      Patience. The snare will sound absolutely sick once I actually mix the thing.

    Awesome Video! What kind of kit are you running (brand)? what are your fundamental tunings for each of your toms, snare and kick? They sound amazing! I've been trying to get a nice sound out of my Tama Starclassic but feel its out of tune, even though i'm using a tunebot, I know it could be better. Hate to say it, but I like it before the treatment. There is space and depth. The treatments might make it exact but doesn't give the set the amount of presence that the "before" gave you. • @JasonWelchMusic
    @JasonWelchMusic ปีที่แล้ว

    Please don't take this as an offence. Personal preference is subjective.
    PROS: I absolutely LOVE what it did for the look of the room. It also made your cymbals, kick and toms sound phenomenal.
    CONS: What it did to the snare was the only thing I disliked. I miss the brighter ambience of the room.
    RECOMMENDATION: Using something like a Black Beauty with a thin single ply head, and tuned to ring out, this mix would make me a very happy drummer.
    FINAL THOUGHTS: The independence in your playing is outstanding! So many drummers (including myself) have to really force the independence... and its heard on our recordings. But its like you were born with a quad core brain that can concentrate on individual movements seperately as one fluid motion. I don't go around giving unearned compliments, so believe me, I'm impressed.

    • @AdamTuminaro
      @AdamTuminaro  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the kind words Jason.
      There is no “final mix” heard in this entire video. This video is about the room, not my mixing ability. I didn’t want to spend 2 weeks mixing the kit before posting the vlog, and snare will sound entirely different when I actually mix it.
      I also want to clarify that I do not have a “quad core brain.” Lol. My natural talent is limited, as tons of my early videos show. I just practiced… a lot. No magic tricks, just a couple decades of work, 90% of which has been taught and broken down at the links in the description.
      Thanks for watching and all the best!

      (EDIT) I just found your closing remarks pinned in the comments. Interesting approach.
      When I recorded at Daywind and at Godsey Media, the drums were in a minimally treated room with just 2 gobos. The ambience was nearly deafening, but it sounded great in the control room.
      You've definitely presented a little food for thought.
      Ill be recording tomorrow. Im gonna throw up a few extra gobos and see what happens. What can it hurt, right?

  • @KevinZ2269

    Am I the only drummer in the world that enjoys playing drums in a more ambient room ? I don’t think drums ever belonged in a sound dead room. I actually loved the way the room mic sounded before the treatment ? I’m sure I will be public enemy #1 for even mentioning it. I know rooms have to be treated because of neighbors. I was always wishing I could somehow have an ambient room on the inside ? But have it sound proofed on the inner walls somehow. I guess im a foolish dreamer

    • @AdamTuminaro
      @AdamTuminaro  ปีที่แล้ว +1
