Andrew if you haven’t already flattened out your handle get a price of solid round stock and place it inside your handle. It will allow you to beat on it plus give you a tad more downward force.

@@TheSpud1129 I do the same thing. Short sleeves, shorts and sneakers. I'll take a little slag burn over heat stroke anyday. Although its pretty funny watching me dance around when one of those little dudes fall between my sock and shoe and my water bottle is out if reach.
nice job. Some recommended improvements though, instead of iron pipe use solid steel bar (wont crush). Instead of the angle iron, cut some triangles for the side supports (like fillets) and weld expanded metal on them instead of having a smooth slick metal for some gripping power. I would probably use more expanded metal in between the cleats just for more grip.
Oh I had a random thought... 2inch by 2inch thick wall steel square tubing.. Cut one corner of the square tubing slide the blade down into the tubing and weld it to give it strength. Then Use your mower grinder to sharpen up the blade at a really sharp angle I am guessing that thing would be crazy sharp and split very well although probably very dangerous. Oh and the further down on the handle you tap with the sledge the more umph id delivers to cuttings when your up high cutting like that.
Also did you heat treat that with salt water? Torch it up and then cool it in a saltwater brine bath or similar? Google Lindeus and 5 TECHNIQUES FOR HARDENING STEEL its a good read.
No I didn't and I was seriously considering it. It's already some very strong steel from the 50s or 60s out of that old propane tank. It took forever to drill it out.
i think there is a mechanism someone invented that you can attach to the top of a wooden stump. It is roundish cylinder shape mechanism. There is a blade in the middle and you set your wood on the top and hit the top of the wood with a hammer and it splits the wood. That to me seems like it may work the best. I forgot what its called. Do you know what im talking about andrew?
@@TKCL yah thats it...kindling cracker..i saw it on northern tool a while back and was intrigued....it seems with a nice sharp blade you could get through quite a bit of smaller kindling with minimal effort.
@@TKCL the one on northern tool has great reviews...i know nowadays its hard to even trust you are getting honest reviews. but if you sift through and read them, you can usually pick out the ones that are genuine reviews and the ones that are bots...although the a.i. is getting better.

Agreed, I was trying to use scrap and not buy expensive round stock. Next time I'm at the welding shop I'll see if they have any that large.

Hey a thought. Put some angle iron on where the tubing is. Give a wedge to separate/gap easier as blade goes thru wood?

Cool design! Maybe when you add the extra plates to hit with the hammer. You can bevel some towards the blade to give more of a wedge shape

Kelly, I think if you made the cutting blade shape with a taper like a wedge, it will split the wood better with less blade travel.
It does have some taper, hard to tell with the paint. More would be better.

Could you not build a die for a hydraulic wood splitter to make multiple pieces in one motion?
It gets complicated when making openings that small. Stuff gets stuck easily.
Replace the pipe with a solid rod.
That's quite expensive, this whole build was using scrap I had laying around in the shop. But yes, that would be the best solution for hammering.
